According to a poster on the Jersey Boys Board, Jeremy Kushnier and Erik Bates will be switching casts. Jeremy will join the tour in Toronto and Erik Bates will be heading to Vegas. Jeremy will be leaving Vegas on 8/16. The poster has been pretty accurate with their infor but not sure if this is a permanent or temporary move. LinkUpdated On: 7/28/08 at 12:10 AM
Jersey Boys will be here in December. (Denver). I am already tired of seeing advertisements for it on local TV. Drowsy Chaperone is here in September and I have not seen one advertisement for it. On the 16th Street Mall there are advertisement "frames" at each shuttle bus stop. They are all for Jersey Boys. I was thinking of seeing it, but again, I am already tired of the ads for it here. JMO
I saw the show last week, and, surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. I wasn't really expecting to like it, but I loved the music and the story was entertaining enough. The performances were strong.
The staging took care of any weakness in the story (and there were weak moments). I really enjoyed the inclusion of original video. The precise movements to match the video was amazing! I would definitely see the show again, but I don't know if I would pay top dollar for tickets... That being said it was an enjoyable night at the theatre!
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?
Dallas- horrible sound in Music Hall, but nothing new there.
Thanks for the info about the video. I have no real knowledge of the Four Seasons so I believe ya. Even if it isn't the original video, it is still a neat effect.
I just tagged along because my theatre companion wanted to see the show, and goodness knows she's seen plenty of shows she didn't want to see. I was pleasantly surprised!

It just wasn't as clear as I expected it to be. The sound system/acoustics in Music Hall have never been great. I especially had difficulty hearing the dialogue over the music when someone was narrating. When there was just singing it was fine.
Of course, this was the first time I had seen the show. Lots of times I will be seeing a tour I've seen at least once on Broadway or somewhere else. So the accents and unfamiliar dialogue might have been the problem...
That being said, there really shouldn't be an excuse for poor sound!

Just back from Las Vegas, where it was a charmingly cool 108 degrees.
Las Vegas was... weird. From the cuts to being sort of disoriented by what happened to John Altieri, to the extremely weird audience, it was kind of hard to internalize.
First, the audience... I guess 10pm gives people a lot of time to get inebriated, and it's Vegas so people have... different standards for theater etiquette, or something. Apparently some woman really liked "Short Shorts," because when Joey told Bob to "play that new one," she yelled out "SHORT SHORTS!" Later, someone, possibly the same woman, shouted out, "MEEE-OW!"
The sound was good if a bit too loud. I mean, the show has always been loud, but generally, I didn't find "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" entirely deafening at other venues.
I saw both Dominic Scaglione and Rick Faugno as Frankie. I felt like Dominic Scaglione has all the right stuff to be a great Frankie, but it hadn't quite come together yet. His acting was great overall, but his dancing was quite awkward and I think perhaps his concentrating on the dancing took over the rest of the performance at times. I'd love to see him later in the run, as I think he has the potential to be really great. Rick Faugno has always been a strong actor, and his voice has an interesting "rock" grit to it that I have always liked, and he's only gotten more solid since.
I really, really enjoyed seeing Jeremy Kushnier again. His Tommy seems craftier than the other Tommys, which he really makes work. I especially love the part before "Walk Like a Man," when instead of actually not getting it, he appears to be really enjoying winding Bob up, as well as "Cry For Me," when his joining in playing with the other guys is because he's noticing that people in the venue are paying attention. Jeff Leibow, as always, hit the perfect balance of OCD yet strangely endearing, especially with his rant about the towels.
Erich Bergen seems more dry and droll than I remembered. I am not sure how this plays to people who haven't seen him before as opposed to how it does for those of us who have, but it worked well overall. He has an incredibly smooth voice, which I had sort of forgotten. Joyce Chittick brings a nice, hard brittle edge to Mary, which makes the breakup scene quite strong. I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well, but as I'm not inclined to write 10 pages... if anyone wanted to know something about a particular performance, let me know.
I felt like the cuts mostly made sense, and wouldn't have been obvious to anyone who hadn't seen the show a, er, few times. Cut verses here and there, a cut line or word here or there... it all adds up. The only time I found it really jarring was with the final monologues... I think a little was lost there, especially for Nick Massi.
I really didn't get the 8 minute "Short Break" with the weird video of driving in San Francisco, gambling in Vegas, and a cow at the Ohio state fair. Maybe if I were drunk it would have seemed normal.
Also, The Jersey Store is fabulously tacky. There was seriously a "Working My Way" ball cap, among other things (Fallen Angel key chain?!).
So, it was definitely great to see the show again, with a very good mix of cast members, and hopefully I can catch it again in the future (although hopefully with less deafening sound).

So, I basically can't get back to sleep right now but I'm leaving Chicago today.
I saw the show first on Sunday when I found out and broke down and bought a ticket to see Jake Speck as Nick Massi. John Hickman was on for Craig Laurie.
What can I say? I always knew that Jake Speck was a very solid swing, and even from the last row of the balconey, he was pretty great. I've heard good things about his Tommy and I have to say, the first time I saw the Chicago cast, I liked him, Craig, and Steven the best. I might write more later, but that's a lot of shows to write about..haha.
Anyways, I felt that John Hickman did a great job, considering he's also so young. I didn't think his Bob Crewe was that over-the-top, which is good. I definitely liked his freakout pre "Can't Take My Eyes". I felt that he stayed pretty solid throughout the show.
Michelle Knight is a really strong Mary Delgado with a VERY strong voice. I think she might be one of my favorites in that role.
I don't know if it's just me, but I frickin' loved Steven Goldsmith each time I saw the show. He's also so entertaining to watch during "Cry For Me". But, I have to admit I did wish he was going to be on as Frankie sometime this week.
But I do have to say that there were little things that were different in everyone's portrayals than from what I remembered.
Hmm, I'll probably write more later when I am more coherent?
OH, and I know it's not Jersey Boys, but I saw Chris Jones and Jenna Coker-Jones in Joseph as well and all I have to say about that show right now that it was absolutely wonderful.
I'm pretty sure that the photo doesn't involve Jeremy Kushnier and Steve Gouveia... Oops.
