Patti is so wrong for Desiree, it's crazy. She might have made a good Petra many moons ago, but that's about the extent of roles she could have played in NIGHT MUSIC.
she actually wanted to audition for Petra, but she was touring with The Acting Company. at least, I think that's what she's said.
Patti isn't right for Night Music. Neither is Zero Mostel or Carol Channing or Charo.
But OH, how I would have LOVED to see a production of A Little Night Music, starring LuPone, Mostel, Channing, and Charo!
Yep. She did say she wanted to audition for Petra.
Besty, that production sounds tons more interesting--not to mention comedic--than what Nunn concept of drawing inspiration from "Frowns of a Summer Night" as you called it, sounds like.
I didn't realize Patti wanted to audition for Petra. Precisely because she might have been right for Petra, she is entirely wrong for Desiree.
I'm still annoyed he's basing his direction on the film. There are big differences.

Hey Bobby!
Just watched 'Smiles..." for the first time..what do you see are the differences between the film and the show?
I can't answer for Bobby, but I hope you don't mind if I answer with my own opinion.
I was surprised that I felt that Smiles was more melancholy than Night Music. it's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember thinking that I had expected the opposite. that is, I thought Smiles would be lighter in tone than Night Music.
another thing about A Little Night Music I like is how likable all of the characters are, even though they're all pretty flawed. I didn't feel the same way about Smiles. Desiree in Night Music always strikes me as being a good, warm, loving person. I definitely didn't feel the same way about Desiree in Smiles.

Yeah. I completely agree with you. I found that in the movie that Desiree wasn't as likable. You were never 'rooting' for her. I DID find the movie to be quite funny, but agree that Night Music is funnier. I did like the age she was, about 40.
I really appreciated the age of most everyone in the movie, and can see why Nunn has chosen to stick to it. It works; it keeps the show fresh, light, and sensual. But come to think of it, I don't think that Henrik looked 19, or that Anne really looked 18... they both looked a few years older. If they truly look like teenagers, it raises the stakes of their relationship, because then theirs' BELIEVABLY becomes a story about coming-of-age and first sexual encounters, etc(think Wedekind's Spring's Awakening being done with actors that looked 25 or 30). Having each age group in the show clearly distinguised allows for more contrast between each and every couple, as well. Thoughts?
Oh and Charlotte, in the movie, seemed slightly more evil and conniving than she is in Night Music. Did anyone else see that?

Another thread says Megan Mullaly is doing a show this season.
Could she be the actress that was offered Desiree?!

No, it wasn't Megan. But interesting thought, haha! Kind of like Charo as Madame Armfeldt.
Offers have been made for Madame and Desiree (officially last week) and they are working out negotiations right now. No word about Frederick.

Megan Mullaly is going to be in a play, according to the article.
Mmmm, wonder if this means anything about their Desiree accepting their offer. Or maybe not. They still refuse to acknowledge the Kerr as their house.

Hopefully another announcement with the casting will come soon.

One would think the announcement came because they confirmed some of the final casting this morning. Does anyone know who released the press announcement?
Feels like we're getting closer!

Although the article doesn't acknowledge it, it will be going into the Kerr. No question there.
I don't get why they won't just come out and say it then?!?!
Well, given that performances don't begin until December, it could theoretically be a while before casting is announced. Hopefully sooner rather than later, though!
Yep. They definitely have time. At least we know it's definitely on track!

Exactly, Emcee. Ragtime opens Nov 15, one month before Night Music, and they haven't announced a cast either.
"Soon I promise..."
I'm beginning to think we have as good a chance getting a cast list as Frederik did with getting Anne in bed.

Lol, I agree Bobby. They're going into rehearsals in October, so we might not get a real announcement until late September/early October.
What I'm surprised about is that they won't say that they are going into the Walter Kerr, or say when tickets go on sale as I was hoping to buy my tickets next time I'm in the city.

Anything new?
What's the deal with Burn the Floor taking over the Kerr's marquis?
