I think it is too because singing and acting... either you have it or you don't. But ANYONE can dance or learn how if they tried. But some people don't like to try.
That dance was taught to her in a few hours, with a few hours to rehearse it. The regular practice time for a Broadway replacement is about two weeks. Considering they're all amatuer and this is a BIG role, they will most likely have more time. If Autumn does win, she will have plenty of time to learn the thirty seconds of tap dancing in the show.
Bailey totally wins it. that clip is clearly a HIGHLY synthesized Bailey. God be with her as she ruins her voice over the next few months.
poo - i was rooting for Autumn. Ah wells.
Listening to Autumn's stuff on her website makes me think that she needs to go in for this Spider-Man call. Both she and Celina, methinks, could make great Mary Janes.
Oh, nevermind just re-read they want tinker-tots for the roles.
What IS this trend of having (literally) CHILDREN headline on Broadway and destroy their voices? Didn't we learn from Rent? Now we've got 14-21 year olds headlining Spring Awakening, Legally Blonde, Rent, and soon, Spider-Man.
Also, I wouldn't want to see Autumn "faking" the 'legal jargen (sp?)' part of What You Want. How can you fake something on Broadway? All I see her doing is improvising. If she did win the part of Elle and that spotlight were on her doing the shuffle, I would be totally embarrassed! Trying to fake it in front of the entire audience. Get real!
I really don't think people are going to go "OMGIGOD she isn't tapping, SHE SHOULD BE TAPPING, this show is ruined because she couldn't do the 15 seconds of tap, FOR SHAME!!!" Choreography CAN BE CHANGED, do you understand that?
Maybe I would prefer Autumn to Bailey just because I'm such a stickler for good vocals.
Anyway, I think that you're being a little too generalizing. It depends on the performer ability and training more than the performer's age. Remember that 17-year-old who played Christine in Phantom?
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Please tell me one person, in this age range who has "ruined their voice"
"Spring Awakening is about teenagers. Why wouldn't you want teenagers starring in the show"
Exaclty. I mean, Patti LuPone can't play Wendla. XD
It isn't really tap dancing unless you are wearing tap shoes. Elle does what is called "soft shoe". Soft shoe is much easier to "fake" as Autumn put it because you aren't required to make any sounds. You just have to look like you are making them.

Regarding Spider-Man, at the beginning of the movie, aren't Peter and Mary Jane in their senior year of high school? So what's wrong with someone who is 16-20 (which is what they recommended for the casting call) playing in those roles. As long as they don't look too young, I don't see what is wrong with it.

Christine is still a very vocally demanding role and she handled it just fine.
There are young singers out there who are ruining their voices and Bailey will become one of them if she ends up playing Elle, but you shouldn't decry people having been cast just because they're under the age of 22. There are plenty of young singers out there with great technique.
I remember a conversation similar to this in an opera community. Someone said never to sing Verdi until the age of 30, and another person responded, "Because the enzyme that lets you sing Verdi doesn't activate until you're 30 years old."

Okay. If we insist on judging all these girls, then we should judge them on eqaul grounds. I think Autumn is great. I think she is well trained. But you can't say, change the dance for her, give her a break because she's sick, etc. when you don't cut Bailey any slack. If these were normal auditions, being sick, or not knowing the dance would get you cut. And if your philosophy on "cutting them some slack" holds true, then you need to cut Bailey some slack on her acting, and Rhiannon on her singing.
I think Bailey has given the most consistent auditions. Rhiannon has given the most sincere auditions. Autumn has given the most polished auditions.
But Autumn isn't a strong enough dancer, and didn't even try to get that tap step. Bailey isn't bringing her own take to the role. And Rhiannon has such inconsistent vocals, she couldn't do the show 8 times a week.
I don't think any of them are Broadway ready yet. Hopefully, rehearsals will do some good. But if you give one contestant slack on an area of discipline, then you have to do the same to the rest. That's what I think, at least.
I want to apologize for some offensive messages posted on this board under my name. The night 0f 12-15-08 I did not have internet access, and someone had used my name to post something offensive. My avatar was also changed. I dont' know what else was posted, or if anyone recieved bad PMs, but I want to apologize for that. I've changed my password, and even though I was not the one posting these messages it still needed to be corrected.
Ok. heres what I have found. On wikipedia Autumn is shown in the touring cast as Vivienne. lauren is also shown as elles understudy at ensemble member. Baileys sister has posts on her my space that I actually saw with my own eyes from several of her friends that she is leaving for NYC on the 22nd to see her sister! Its wierd that she would go when the show premieres with new cast if Bailey is not in it. Im guessing due to all of this that bailey did in fact win. I agree non of them seemed ready but they have had weeks of coaching and rehearsing. We will probably be surprized at how far she has come. There was also a glitch when her single so much better was pre released and we were able to hear it. It sure sounded like bailey not autumn or rhiannon. It was taken down almost as soon as it was put up. Now there are notices that state it will be available on the 22nd. HMMMMMM....
that is a good post - maybe it's because I can't dance to save my life but I'd rather take Autumn's iffy dancing over Bailey's mediocrity. She's terrific when she's got to be spirited and cute, but her title ballad and "Ohmygod" were just...bland, as someone said. Classic case of displaying instead of showing something from your gut. To me, energy rules all and even when Autumn's inconsistent in some ways, I feel that her energy is always there. And it's not like Autumn is incapable of singing the show. Plus, she's original and brings a uniqueness.
It's a shame, Lauren was just growing on me. I DO hope all of the 4 finalists get cast in the Tour or on Broadway. They're all very talented in some way or another.
Once again, that's Wiki. You can't really go by that. Also that would be really odd for Autumn to be the tour Vivienne. She's so small and tiny some of the lines wouldn't really make so sense. Plus she's so bubbly and silly that Vivienne is really not a good choice for her. I hope she is really getting Becky's track if not she would be great in the Kate/Chutney track.
That message on Bailey's sister's Facebook is astonishing if it's indeed true. I have a cousin who won a reality show, and his own mom (who is pretty much his best friend) didn't know he won until the moment actually aired on TV. He would have owed the network/producers of his show ten million dollars if the news of his win had gotten out before the show aired according to the confidentiality agreement. I don't think any of this is true - even if it is actually on her Facebook, it may be a decoy post.
Have I ever shown you my Shattered Dreams box? It's in my Disappointment Closet. - Marge Simpson
I am so sick of people being like Autumn can't do the "tap". It is like 10 seconds long and half of the people that see the damn show don't get the joke anyway. Jeez. Peggy Sawyer is a "tap" role not Elle Woods.
