I recently started listening to the podcast series Tomorrow, an adventure serial sequel to Annie set in 2025. It's a mixed bag (Laura Benanti as Mis Hannigan? Excellent! Talking Robots and autotuned covers of Tomorrow? Less so...) but it got me thinking about all the Theatre podcasts out there. BroadwayWorld has several, but I haven't listened to many of them - I wasn't too impressed by Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, and only got through one episode of TWITS. Can you provide a list of any good theatre related podcasts/original audio dramas/comedies with Broadway talent for me to check out?
"My Little Tonys" is a fun one that focuses specifically on the Tony awards/ceremonies. They haven't released a new episode for several months, though.
"Chosen By Committee" is an interesting podcast that looks as every play that won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
A Musical Theatre Podcast - each episode takes a show and runs through the plot, the story of its creation, etc. They’ve had some great guests
My Little Tonys - they basically break down a Broadway season by discussing a Tony ceremony. LOVE the content but sometimes the people seem like they’d rather be anywhere but making the podcast😅
Sunday In The Heights With Dolly - kinda similar to the others but still fun!
Putting it Together- every episode breaks down a single song from Sondheim‘s catalogue
I listened to Burnt recently. It's mainly about Rebecca, but also covers other Broadway "scandals". I found there were some inaccuracies and a lack of knowledge for the topics beyond Rebecca, but it was still interesting to listen to.
They are on a hiatus right now, but "Behind the Curtain: Broadway's Living Legends" is incredible, and my favourtite podcast. Their guests are fasinating, especially ones who performed in the "golden age" (ie. George S. Irving just before he passed). You don't have many people around from the original cast of Oklahoma!
I hope Rob and Kevin come back new to my earbuds soon!
"Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok. Have you guys heard about fidget spinners!?" ~Patti LuPone
Sentimental Men has been a really fun one for me, though I think they're on hiatus right now but all of their old episodes are fantastic. I thought I was a Wicked fan that knew a lot about the show, but I have learned so much through their interviews with former Elphabas and Glindas.
I like all of these suggestions, but with exception of "Off Book", there are no scripted/serialised series, which is odd given that I mentioned these as my main examples. At the very least, it would be nice to know of any theatre-related serial podcasts which DON'T rely on Laura Benanti to make them worth listening to...
As The Curtain Rises is a fun spoof Broadway soap opera; like if Smash was a comedy.
Bleeding Love and Falling in Love with Mr Dellamort are quirky oddball musical audio dramas. Your mileage may vary because they’re very out there, but I enjoyed both.
I was also going to recommend Jim & Tomics Musical Theater Happy Hour. I haven't heard why we haven't gotten new episodes. But since one of them teaches in a school, his work life might not be conducive to recording.
A bit of a callback, but for those who'd like to know, Jim and Tomic's Musical Theatre Happy Hour podcast is back, at least for now; they've put out a new episode about 'On the Town'. https://jimandtomic.com/
