I know that in Tokyo they have the Cats theatre which was built just for cats, and in Germany they have the Starlight Express theatre which was just for Starlight Express. But, I was wondering, were there any other theatres worldwide that were/are built just for a specific show?
Hilton circa Ford's Center For The Performing Arts was built for Ragtime

I didn't think that the Ford was built specifically for Ragtime but that it was already going to be built and then Ragtime snatched it up first. But I think I could be wrong.
I always thought that the ford center for tne preforming arts was going to be bulit and Ragtime go to it first.
The theatre in Vegas for Phantom

An international production of Beauty and the Beast had a theatre built for it.
In Vegas Phantom, Spamalot, and Ave Q all had theatres built for them
Actually, unless I am mistaken, wasn't the theatre that Spamalot is in originally built for Avenue Q and they just moved in after Q left?

zurich is correct.
I believe the renovations of Times Square were essentially done for the "Lion King"

i dont think they are built specificaly for a certain show. The publicity of a forthcomeing show can add great interest in the building of a new theatre. The two opening together are perfect partners. It would be in possible to say a theatre was just for one show forever. Even Cats and Starlight closed in London eventually and they said they were going to 'run forever'. It was easy to see the New London theatre being built for Cats but it actually opened a number of years before and held the original London production of Grease with Richard Gere as Danny.

I think some of the Cirque du Soleil shows in Vegas definitely has the theatres built for them. I'm pretty that's the case with Mystere and O.

Cirque du Solil do built their own theatres yes but they are all built to a circus theme and the theatres can easily hold other productions for the company. The most amazing theatre they have is the Vagas house for 'O'. That theatre could stage anything not just a CdS production.

Not so. The theatre for O, for example, has a twenty-foot-deep pool surrounded by a doughnut platform, which limits what kind of production can go in there without major renovation. Their newest show (whose name I forget) has no formal stage, just a 2-story deep chasm from which the performers come up. These houses are built very specifically.

I think Disney's Der Glockner Von Notre Dame had its theatre built especially for the production. The building of new theatres for new shows is more common in Europe and Japan and to a lesser extent Vegas than it is in New York and London.

As you said it couldnt stage anything else without renovation- most theatrs these days have some kind of renovation to it with incomeing shows. Yes, the O theatre is impressive but it is basically a pros arch house. What goes on beyond that will depend on what show is presented later. There are very few theatres in London and im sure on Broadway also that have just a big black hole where many years ago a stage would be. The London Palladium had its famous revolving stage removed permanently for Chitty. Its an incredible site to see a theatre with no show and see that it also doest have a stage.

Not to belabour the point, but you really havent seen O, have you?
IT was mentioned too that in Hamburg, both the Neuen Flora was built for phantom and the Haffen was built for Lion King ( i may have spelt those wrong)
and the Pantages in Toronto was renovated for phantom.
one may say also that Livent also renovated the Oriental in Chicago for Ragtime same way it built/combined the ford centre in NYC

Wasn't the old Hippodrome built specifically for Billy Rose's JUMBO?
It was before my time but Mr Roxy should have vivid recollections of it. I believe he laid the cornerstone.

The Cannon/Pentages in Toronto was only refurbished to what it looked like in the 20s. Phantom just happened to be its first and longest tennant.

The Hippodrome was a theatre and cinema before Jumbo opened. The designer just modified the building as was done for Cats etc etc

I think you're missing the point, Wicked. Of course these houses weren't built to hold one show forever or be demolished. However, the question being asked is "was the show the impetus for building the house?" It's happened several times in Vegas. Does everyone expect the Vegas Phantom to run forever? And if it doesn't does anyone expect them to demolish the theatre after? no and no, but the theatre WAS erected specifically for that production.
Don't forget Celine Dion's theatre in Vegas

Justin, it is the spelled as the Neue Flora Theatre.
(Das Phantom der Oper ran there for approximately 10 years. It's been followed by other shows such as Tanz der Vampire)
It's a truly fascinating design concept.
