All of these could change, but at this present moment this is how I'm feeling. I'm interested to see Henson/Butz go against each other at the Drama Desks. I think KPOP played in Park's favor for a nomination, but I'm unsure how many voters will have seen that. I'm giving her the edge right now.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
Am I the only one convinced Once on this Island will get scenic design over spongebob? Sure, spongebob has the balls and such but in Once on this Island it RAINS and has a pond, not to mention the sand lifting up and all of the garbage around the theatre/things that get fixed throughout the show. And don't even get me started about timounes tree. I am not a fan of this show (at ALL) but, the scenic design truly wowed me, just like comet.
If there was an award for Best Proscenium, I'd give it to Spongebob. It's fun and impressive but so many other times throughout the show the stage looked bare and bland. Once on this Island transported you for the entire show, start to finish. Spongebob had moments, and those moments were creative and incredible, but as an entire design I give the edge to Once on This Island.
Anyone else think this year is kind of like 2012? The Bands Visit is once.
In our millions, in our billions, we are most powerful when we stand together. TW4C unwaveringly joins the worldwide masses, for we know our liberation is inseparably bound.

SpongeBob won't win Best Musical. The Band's Visit has already announced a tour, which I don't think SpongeBob has done yet. Also, The Band's Visit not winning Best Musical would cost the Tony Awards any of credibility that it has.

Haven't seen it on Broadway, but I thought The Band's Visit had such a smart and simple design. But I loved the ways they kept surprising using the space. I know it's not as flashy as Spongebob - which I thought was super bland (cool build-out, but the actual set was ugly and boring) - and I haven't seen My Fair Lady yet, but I'm sure it's gorgeous. Once on this Island was a cool use of the space, but not sure there was enough for Tony voters to grab onto.
As long as SpongeBob wins as few Tonys as possible, I'm happy. ANYWAY. Best Director of a Musical almost always goes to the winner of Best Musical or Revival (only 3 times this century has that not been the case). That being said, I wouldn't be too surprised if Musical went to BAND'S VISIT, Revival went to MY FAIR LADY, and Director went to ONCE ON THIS ISLAND.
Best Leading Actor in a Musical is really going to be the most interesting category of the night. GoldDerby currently has Tony as the number one pick, but I don’t see it going to him, but it very well could.
Why are some posters so sure that Tony voters care about Tina Fey? I mean maybe they would have if this was like 5-8 years ago or if she created something from scratch.
Disclaimer FWIW: I have seen The Band's Visit (without Shalhoub), My Fair Lady, Mean Girls, SpongeBob, Frozen, Once On This Island, Carousel, Harry Potter, Angels in America, Lobby Hero, and Meteor Shower. I have Three Tall Women next week. [I edited this post after seeing My Fair Lady.]
Best Play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Best Musical The Band's Visit
Best Revival of a Play Angels in America (But what a category!)
Best Revival of a Musical Once on This Island (if there was any award I could guarantee this year, this would be it)
Best Book of a Musical Mean Girls, Tina Fey (or Itamar Moses. I keep going back and forth on this one.)
Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre The Band's Visit, David Yazbek (Finally! Hooray!)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play Andrew Garfield, Angels in America (Probably my favorite performance of the season. I'm still reeling.)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play Glenda Jackson, Edward Albee's Three Tall Women
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical Ethan Slater, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical (This is for sure the most up in the air category, though I'm rooting for Slater. He's irreplaceable in the show, and I hope he thanks his physical therapist in his acceptance speech!)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical Katrina Lenk, The Band's Visit
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play Nathan Lane, Angels in America
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play Denise Gough, Angels in America
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical Grey Hensen, Mean Girls (This is pretty open too. I wouldn't be shocked at any of the five names being called.)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical Lindsay Mendez, Carousel
Best Direction of a Play Marianne Elliott, Angels in America
Best Direction of a Musical Michael Arden, Once On This Island
Best Choreography Justin Peck, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel
Best Orchestrations Jamshied Sharifi, The Band's Visit (Though I would love for a tie with Once On This Island here...)
Best Scenic Design of a Play Ian MacNeil and Edward Pierce, Angels in America (Or Harry Potter. They were both magnificent designs.)
Best Scenic Design of a Musical Michael Yeargan, My Fair Lady (Also a tough category. I don't know how you pick between this, OOTI, and SpongeBob)
Best Costume Design of a Play Jonathan Fensom, Farinelli and the King
Best Costume Design of a Musical Catherine Zuber, My Fair Lady
Best Lighting Design of a Play Paule Constable, Angels in America
Best Lighting Design of a Musical Tyler Micoleau, The Band's Visit
Best Sound Design of a Play Gareth Fry, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two
Best Sound Design of a Musical Walter Trarbach and Mike Dobson, SpongeBob SquarePants
I saw Mean Girls in DC, but have not seen it on Broadway. I will say that Tina Fey's book is probably the strongest thing about the show. I'm not a fan of the framing device either, but the jokes really land. Grey Henson and Ashley Park earned their nods. Kate Rockwell was ROBBED.
I also saw The Band's Visit back in October when it was still in previews. I found it very good, if slightly too relaxed. However, Katrina Lenk singing Omar Sharif is one of the most memorable theatrical experiences of my life. The song, the lighting, her illuminating voice and presence. I hope she wins.
