I've never heard of that rule, and it doesn't even make sense. Some people are believable only within a few years of their real age, and others can get away with much more. It's as individual as every person.
Have I ever shown you my Shattered Dreams box? It's in my Disappointment Closet. - Marge Simpson
I was elated at the prospect of very talented, well known performers taking over the roles. I think age is pretty much irrelevant. If an actor can pull off the role, let them. I will take talent casting over age appropriate casting ANYday.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
i've only heard Ann at a cabaret type event, so I can't comment on her acting wise, but I do really enjoy her voice. I just don't see her as Elphaba. (Liz, on the other hand, I agree would be a great Glinda and I think her voice is perfect for the role). I agree talent trumps age appropriateness any day (obviously since they're sisters the chemistry onstage between the good and bad witch would be great) but at the same time i can understand where people are coming from on looking too old. From seeing her in person, though she is still beautiful of course, she does look much older than the cover for her album. To me she is a very mature performer, and I can see her doing better things with her talent than donning a cape and being flown up in a cherry picker.
"What ever happened to the "an actor should only play a role plus/minus 7 years their age" rule....."
It probably went out the window around the same time Ethel Merman revived her role as Annie Oakley. And when Bernadette Peters was cast in the same role. Annie Oakley was 21 when she met Buffalo Bill.
It's called theatre, people. It's not real. Suspension of disbelief. I bet Idina is not really green, either. But I know for a fact that Patti Lupone aged about 15 years during every performance of Evita. C'mon y'all! It's not like they're casting Kathy Bates as Annie Warbucks. The Callaways in Wicked in that that big of a stretch.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
"I just hope they stop promoting standbys to lead roles in this show."
at what point are they allowed to be promoted then?! Hilty is 24 years old and I think performs well beyond her years.
If you really want to help the American theater, don't be an actress, dahling. Be an audience.....
Don't be taken in by the guff that critics are killing the theater. Commonly they sin on the side of enthusiasm. Too often they give their blessing to trash...

if this was wicked the movie, they would be far too old for the parts. but, its not! remember ann reinking reprising her role in chicago twenty years after she first performed it? what about spelling bee? those actors are defintiely not in middle school. and younger stars often play elderly people. on broadway, if the actors can play the part convincingly and well, i say go for it!
"But now the air is filled with confusion. We replace care with illusion."
I'm not saying any opinion isn't valid, just asking when it is you think standby's and understudies should be able to be promoted to lead roles.

I think they're both great singers, ok actors. That said, aren't they a little on the old-ish side? (Disclaimer: I don't mean this to be nasty in any way)
If they are good enough of an actor, a true performer will make you believe there age.
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
It's not just about their age, it's about how they read. I don't think either of them read that young. It's definitely an interseting concept, especially the switching roles on matinee days. It's the kind of stunt that would work for a short run, but the novelty would wear off. I don't want to sound rude, but I hate the way some of you stereotype Wicked fans. We're not all babbling thirteen year olds who have never seen any other show. I honestly resent that. I've heard both Ann and Liz, and I think they are both amazingly talented. I also want to add that Megan and Sho are both incredible, and their lack of experience has no bearing on their performances. They're still young, and they both have very bright futures ahead of them. I think the fact that they have the leads in the highest grossing show on Broadway at such a young age is a testament to their vast talents. I'll get off my soap box now, but I feel the need to play devil's advocate. Just think twice before you judge people for liking a certain show :)
Can I ask that anyone who disagrees with my opinion on this or any other thread, argue with me on the boards, and not send me threatening PM's. It's just my opinion people. I'll respect yours, if you respect mine. Just keep it public, thanks.
Oh Carolee fan. If it's my PM you are referring to, I wasn't challenging your opinion, I was simply stating a fact of which you might not be aware. (The mature response I got from Caroleefan was EAT ME). Below is a copy of my PM:
Just for the record, your beloved Carolee was promoted from understudy to lead in her FIRST broadway show, City of Angels. I think Carolee is amazing, but I am willing to bet there were a lot of people who didn't think she measured up to her predecessor...Randy Graff. Just FYI.
