Liz Callaway SOUNDS younger than most of the Glinda's I've heard. Cheno and Menzel aren't exactly teens either.

I was elated at the prospect of very talented, well known performers taking over the roles. I think age is pretty much irrelevant. If an actor can pull off the role, let them. I will take talent casting over age appropriate casting ANYday.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

i've only heard Ann at a cabaret type event, so I can't comment on her acting wise, but I do really enjoy her voice. I just don't see her as Elphaba. (Liz, on the other hand, I agree would be a great Glinda and I think her voice is perfect for the role). I agree talent trumps age appropriateness any day (obviously since they're sisters the chemistry onstage between the good and bad witch would be great) but at the same time i can understand where people are coming from on looking too old. From seeing her in person, though she is still beautiful of course, she does look much older than the cover for her album. To me she is a very mature performer, and I can see her doing better things with her talent than donning a cape and being flown up in a cherry picker.

"What ever happened to the "an actor should only play a role plus/minus 7 years their age" rule....."
It probably went out the window around the same time Ethel Merman revived her role as Annie Oakley. And when Bernadette Peters was cast in the same role. Annie Oakley was 21 when she met Buffalo Bill.
It's called theatre, people. It's not real. Suspension of disbelief. I bet Idina is not really green, either. But I know for a fact that Patti Lupone aged about 15 years during every performance of Evita. C'mon y'all! It's not like they're casting Kathy Bates as Annie Warbucks. The Callaways in Wicked in that that big of a stretch.

"I just hope they stop promoting standbys to lead roles in this show."
at what point are they allowed to be promoted then?!
Hilty is 24 years old and I think performs well beyond her years.

Well you think she performs beyond her years, and I think she's a bit green for a lead role.
Separate opinions. Both completely valid.

They are definitely too old for the parts.

if this was wicked the movie, they would be far too old for the parts. but, its not! remember ann reinking reprising her role in chicago twenty years after she first performed it? what about spelling bee? those actors are defintiely not in middle school. and younger stars often play elderly people. on broadway, if the actors can play the part convincingly and well, i say go for it!

I'm not saying any opinion isn't valid, just asking when it is you think standby's and understudies should be able to be promoted to lead roles.

I think they're both great singers, ok actors. That said, aren't they a little on the old-ish side? (Disclaimer: I don't mean this to be nasty in any way)

Liz has an amazing voice, but physically she would be more suited to Madame Morrible than Glinda; she's neither young, or attractive.

Liz is 2 years younger than Ana Gasteyer.

There is no way Ann could pull off Elphaba vocally.. Liz could TOTALLY kick ass as Glinda though!

Benzy, apparently you haven't heard Ann's full range. She would tear it up.

OMG Ann couldn't do Elphaba?? my ass..she could do that in her sleep..
I love TRAINED people doing these roles..it's an Eargasm... (i.e. Steph J. and Jenna Leigh Green)
Soprano Belters are the best to have in these roles..it's a pure beautiful song that won't be broken down by the 5th night...

If they are good enough of an actor, a true performer will make you believe there age.

It's not just about their age, it's about how they read. I don't think either of them read that young. It's definitely an interseting concept, especially the switching roles on matinee days. It's the kind of stunt that would work for a short run, but the novelty would wear off. I don't want to sound rude, but I hate the way some of you stereotype Wicked fans. We're not all babbling thirteen year olds who have never seen any other show. I honestly resent that. I've heard both Ann and Liz, and I think they are both amazingly talented. I also want to add that Megan and Sho are both incredible, and their lack of experience has no bearing on their performances. They're still young, and they both have very bright futures ahead of them. I think the fact that they have the leads in the highest grossing show on Broadway at such a young age is a testament to their vast talents. I'll get off my soap box now, but I feel the need to play devil's advocate. Just think twice before you judge people for liking a certain show :)
Pillowpants. 'Nuff said.

I at least think Liz Callaway voice is young enough, she has been playing Disney Princesses, and is DAMN fantastic at it.
(Not Disney) but she's the voice of Anastacia, and then she was the voice of Jasmine in the second Aladdin movie...she has a very youthful voice.

Can I ask that anyone who disagrees with my opinion on this or any other thread, argue with me on the boards, and not send me threatening PM's. It's just my opinion people. I'll respect yours, if you respect mine. Just keep it public, thanks.

Oh Carolee fan. If it's my PM you are referring to, I wasn't challenging your opinion, I was simply stating a fact of which you might not be aware. (The mature response I got from Caroleefan was EAT ME).
Below is a copy of my PM:
Just for the record, your beloved Carolee was promoted from understudy to lead in her FIRST broadway show, City of Angels. I think Carolee is amazing, but I am willing to bet there were a lot of people who didn't think she measured up to her predecessor...Randy Graff. Just FYI.
