Maybe/Hopefully Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will finally recoup it $68M+ investment this year. I have no idea what the post pandemic re-capitalization to reopen and condense the show into a single part added to that initial $68M investment, but assuming a $1M weekly operating cost then upping it to $1.1M post pandemic its made $89M in profit. If you increase the post pandemic costs to $1.2M a week the total profit drops to $83M, but considering one of the big factors in condensing the show into a single part was cost cutting, I can't images costs rising by 20% post pandemic. If anything with the changes I would think they would be flat or slightly down to pre-pandemic, which if that's the case its profited over $95M.

Note the show may have recouped already, but considering its the 2nd most expensive Broadway show ever produced, with the 3rd most expensive costing less than half of what Harry Potter cost to mount, I would think producers would be eager to put a feather in their cap to confirm they've turned a profit.

Amazing for the long runners, I would assume.

Slimming it down to one part is one of the smartest things these producers have done –– though still doesn't fully ameliorate the hubris of a two-part play.

The weather was excellent this week and the city was packed! TKTS line wait times was over 2 hours all week.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

It's hard to get too worked up about a single week that is supposed to be as good as it gets. Let's relax and see what's going on over the next 8 frames.

It's gonna be a great week across the board and, to address Hogan's point, I really have no problem celebrating that.

Isn’t breaking the box office record just indicative that a production is selling the same amount of seats for obscenely higher prices - especially in a time where there are many concerns about price accessibility to theatre?

It’s not gonna be great for a decent number of shows unfortunately.  A thousand years ago, it used to be great for everything (of course, the rest of December was awful.  Nowadays,  serious fare tends to do worse on Christmas week.  Will be interesting to see how many still do badly, despite a bunch of new house records being set, purely due to higher prices and a 9 performance week.

I was not suggesting that you should not celebrate that. My comment was really more directed at drawing any conclusions from it which some here seem inclined to do.

Four shows have released their grosses individually, so why does it take so long for the Broadway League to publish them?

Because A)  Yesterday was a holiday and most offices were closed; and 2) it takes time to gather and prepare the data for dissemination.

JK Rowling is such a horribly dangerous person, I'm disappointed in anybody seeing this as a good thing.

JK Rowling aside, I don't think anyone's CELEBRATING money going into HER pocket, but more so seeing glimmers of a healthier Broadway market than doomsday folks continue to spout. Your feelings about her are valid and justified, but not every single thing that's tangentially related to her is due the outrage of 10,000 suns.

Remember, this show is employing over 100 people in just that building alone. THAT is worth celebrating.

Yeah, I think they must usually do it on Monday and then release Tuesday. This week (and last) they have to do it and release it on Tuesday. I think we got it around 7 pm last week?

Indeed. Rowling is going to be riculously wealthy for the rest of her life regardless how many people see this play (or buy her books for that matter), so it’s best to focus on the many others who are benefiting from the show’s success.

I can't agree. Yes, it is doing some good... but it doing much more harm. The continued success of the Harry Potter brand will only bring her more fans. Admirers who she can influence. It legitimizes her hate speech, and hardens the core of transphobic groups that support her. Yeah, I know she didn't even write this play, but she is the one who gains the most from it. I don't want to contribute to that in any way.

I always wonder how the show is doing, because not much is said about it, and then bam-news like this. I guess it's quietly succeeding and chugging along because so many people grew up with the books, they introduce the books to their children because no matter who you are, certain things stay with you, provided comfort, and not everyone can just throw comforting things away or change them. So I'm happy to see the success.

I saw the show in its first few months on Broadway, doing two shows in one day from incredible 4th row aisle seats. I loved every second and still think of the elation I had when I left the theatre after both shows.

I went back in Novemeber, curious to see how it stood up in one part. Went to TKTS an hour before showtime, and coincidently got the same seat I sat in, alas MUCH cheaper. Minus one weak actor, I loved it as much as the first. I highly recommend those who haven’t seen it in a while, or at all, to go see it in its current form.

I think we all agree to your point but like has been said the show is employing so many people both here and abroad and so for that I think it’s wonderful. Same with Rudin, he sucks but hey he did give us some wonderful productions.
