Was JLY on for the weekend shows?

Yea, his dad was in the military so he probably bounced around a lot, but I know he went to high school in Plattsburgh and still calls that his "hometown". I think he still has family there too because I go to school not far from there and when the show first opened they interviewed people in the local newspaper and news stations. Kind of the local boy making it big deal...

JLY has been the only, yes only, actor doing 7-8 performances a week as Frankie Valli for an entire year. Let him have a rough patch.

Maybe it's just me.. but I think it's time they cut him permanantly. I don't think there's anything spectacular about him, or his performance.

I totally disagree I think He's an amazing Preformer and he can't help it if he gets sick he was out with something called Candida not that long ago maybe he wasn't totally over it

That's exactly what it is. That crap has been kicking his butt vocally for the last month or so. Heh.

I feel so bad for him that he's not 100% better. I really hope he feels better soon.

"Maybe it's just me.. but I think it's time they cut him permanantly. I don't think there's anything spectacular about him, or his performance."

That statement is so not true. JLY has perhaps the hardest job on Broadway(he even said so in an interview) since he basically sings almost the entire score with or witout the others, and he's only human, he can't help it if he gets sick.

I have seen JLY go on as Frankie twice, once in March and once about 2 weeks before the Tonys and each time he was phenonmenal, definitely not underrated. He has an incredible work ethic and is a sweetheart. Its really unfortunate that he has been sick and I am sure he is doing whatever he can to get well. I think the fact that he called out of the show when he wasn't well shows that he does care about the audiences and does not want to give a half ass performance.

First of all, the lead in a show could hardly be said to steal it. After all, it's the lead's show.
Secondly, just because JLY said his role is the hardest on Broadway, you'll believe it? Vocally, I'd imagine that Elphaba is a much harder role to sing through a full week.

bway singer... Elphaba isn't on stage as much as the role of Frankie Valli requires. Plus she doesn't sing in EVERY (minus a few short ones in the beginning and December 1963) song and she also isn't a male singing in a falsetto. I'm not denying that the part is demanding, but I think the role of Frankie Valli is harder.

And scene stealing, I guess I used the expression wrong but in the comparison I used it in, I still think it works. Updated On: 8/29/06 at 02:51 PM

Vocally, I'd imagine that Elphaba is a much harder role to sing through a full week.

The range a female has to use to sing the role of Elphaba compared to the range a male has to use to sing the role of Frankie Valli is drastically different. The role of Elphaba uses maybe 3 octaves (which I have and I can sing Elphaba's part), whereas Frankie uses nearly 4.

Not to mention, as stated above, Elphaba doesn't sing 95% of the score in the show..

Do you guys know anything about falsetto? It's not a strain on the voice unless you really are already extremely sick. That might be the case.
However, asking a woman to scream in her, as you say, three octave range, is a might harder. Dare I say, it's extremely harder.

Fine, I'm not going to argue which is harder because I physically cannot sing either of them. REGARDLESS, the role of Frankie Valli is ONE of the hardest parts on Broadway to play. And actually, I never think John claimed it was the hardest. If you can find the quote I guess I have no choice to believe it but I think all he has said it that it is a hard part as am I saying right now. I still think it is a harder role than Elphaba but is it really that big a deal? Both are INCREDIBLY demanding and are roles that very few people out there can perform 8 times a week sucessfully.

Mimi, I'm not the one who quoted JLY as saying he had the hardest part on Broadway. In fact, I have never seen him say that. It was used by another poster to excuse what's going on.
I'm not calling for JLY to be fired. That's just silly. If the role is what is doing this to his voice, however, then the producers of Jersey Boys should announce an alternate Franki and not keep stressing out their Tony-winning lead.

I don't think it's the role or the producers who are stressing out JLY, at least not directly. Without being ill, JLY sings the score flawlessly. It's just this crap he has on his vocal chords he can't seem to get rid of that's doing it. LOL But I think the problem with JLY being in and out of the show so much recently is that he's trying to get in as many performances as possible before his contract is up at the beginning of October, since they don't seem to have asked him to extend his run.

He's got a television show lined up, I believe, so there's little chance he'd be extending.

I haven't heard anything about him actually having a show lined up. He's got the contract with ABC, but that doesn't guarantee him anything. It just means they could either put him on a show already around (ala Sara Ramirez & Grey's Anatomy) or build a show around him - neither of which have happened as of yet. But maybe I'm just out of the loop.

I would imagine that the contract with ABC is exactly why he's not extending, though. Even if nothing is going to happen immediately, one would expect he'd be looking for some downtime between leaving Jersey Boys and beginning a television project, especially if JB is continuing to contribute to his inability to get well.

No, I agree. I'm fairly certain the ABC contract is exactly why he hasn't been asked to extend. As far as I'm aware, from briefly speaking with him at stagedoor (and who knows if what he told me is actually the case), he really wants to stay in the show.

oh. Well, if he's said something, he's just being judicious in what information he'll divulge. If the contract is not in the way, then I'm sure they're negotiating an extension. It's prudent not to reveal things like that until they're done.

Right, I get that. :) I would have just thought if they were going to ask him to extend, they would have done so by now?

I don't know why fans think that these actors would divulge important job-related personal information to strangers at the stagedoor, or even why fans ask these questions. No one here knows if an extension has been discussed, if a discussion is even necessary depending on the type of contract he has, or when it will be discussed. Contract negotiations would not usually be occurring this far in advance of the end of the current contract anyway.

Erinrebecca, fans have simply asked if the actors would like to stay with the show, and if they think they may stay. JLY has said that he would really love to stay with the show, but that it's up to the producers. That's all people are saying.

Thank you for clearing that up, popular. I was kind of sitting here like "..." because erinrebecca made it come off as though I'm some stupid fangirl who asks stupid questions, but maybe I was just wording everything I was saying wrong? I don't know.
