Yes, they argued that it was a revival. ...But lost.
There's good word about Groban's take on Pierre in The Great Comet thread. I'd keep him a strong contender for Best Supporting role (or would they try to justify him being lead since he got top billing?).

I think they could probably justify him going into either so will try and put him into whichever will be the easier category for him to potentially win in.
He and Denee Benton are prominently billed over the title. There is no way either would be lobbied as supporting (heck they even beefed up the role for Groban).

Is Paramour technically a new musical?
The Best Play category is just dire.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sweat transferred from the Public, though.

my guess would be back in the 20's when like a hundred shows opened on broadway every season
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is presumably off for this season because of a lack of theatres. This freed up Derek Hough to do DWTS this season.

Bumping this thread because other extraneous Tony threads are being started. We don't need multiple Tony threads until April at the earliest.

I know that was posted before Indecent was announced, but even so, with Heisenberg, Significant Other, and Oslo, I think it's a pretty solid year actually! And my guess on nominees will be those three plus Indecent. Maybe A Doll's House Part 2 will get raves and get in, but I'm letting my personal dislike of Hnath's work to prevent me from predicting it. :)
Play Revival, on the other hand, I'm finding pretty bleak. With The Cherry Orchard terrible, The Front Page meh, Liasons...fine, not being excited at all for this Menagerie, and hating Present Laughter, I'm leaning heavily on my hopes for Jitney, Six Degrees, and The Little Foxes. Let the Spring revivals be better than Fall!
Best Musical is going to be nuts. My extremely early guesses: Dear Evan Hansen, Great Comet, Groundhog Day, Anastasia (with War Paint on the bubble)

I have a feeling the spring play revivals will be better than what we've had so far.

I think that if Amelie opens in the spring as I expect, it will replace one of the above (and not DEH or Comet)

Still can't believe how crazy Best Actress is going to be.
I hope Oh, Hello gets some recognition come Tony time! It is pure joy.

It's going to be a tough one but I think it's going to be Patti, Christine, Bette, Denee, and Eva.
