What do you think? 2008 would have been an amazing season for revivals if there was a stronger revival than GREASE.

Yeah, there was a stronger one than grease. It's called "South Pacific".

What about South Pacific for 2008? I agree it was great.
2008... of the 3/4s of the nominated revivals were excellent and surpassed the new musicals that year.

2004 was great too, even though I didn't care for the Fiddler revival.

2007 was pretty good...I don't know much about that production of The Apple Tree, but the other three were pretty great, I heard.
2008 had awesome Gypsy, South Pacific and Sunday, but is diminished a little bit by the awful, awful Grease.
2009 seems pretty weak...Hair seems like the only one that's better than mediocre!
2008
... Sans GREASE
I've gotta put in a vote for 2004.
You didn't include Best Revival of Plays - you know - the real theatre.
I changed the title for you.

I might go with 2008. Those 3 revivals probably would have won on their own in any other year.
2008 did feature three magnificent revivals, but the fourth revival was one of the worst revivals of all time.
2004 featured top notch revivals of BIG RIVER (should have won), ASSASSINS, and WONDERFUL TOWN, but that FIDDLER revival was an atrocity.
2007 is the only season in which all of the nominated revivals were solid productions. Even if the production value of THE APPLE TREE wasn't the best, Chenoweth's performance was one for the history books, and she made that production worth seeing.
I loved the FIDDLER revival!
I thought it was gorgeous and I was really moved by it.

It wasn't an abomination, but it was bad.
Well, we're all entitled to our opinions, but there were many who thought David Leveaux should have been run out of town for that production.
Personally, I think FIDDLER, the show, is so dated, and I don't think it should be revived ever again. But many of Leveaux's choices, whether it be in casting, blocking, or placement of the orchestra, were glaringly bizarre, and it certainly didn't bring the best out of FIDDLER.

I loved the 2003 re-worked cabaret revival with Laura Linney and Marc Kudisch. It isn't on this list because it won its tony awards for best revival in 1998, it's the only show in theatre histosry to win a tony 5 years before it came out!
2008 hands down.
Sunday in the Park with George, South Pacific, and the annual revival of Gypsy (minus the revival that shall not be named).

-Agreed
Wish I could say the same of this season. HAIR and WSS. But then Pal Joey and Guys and Dolls happened.
Actually, PAL JOEY and GUYS AND DOLLS happened before WSS and HAIR.
Wasn't speaking chronologically Wanna Be A Foster but thanks for the smart little remark.

Just wanted to say that you're not alone in regards to the "Fiddler on the Roof" revival & I'm glad to see I'm not either. It's amazing how many times I've had to defend my opinion of this beautiful & moving revival in a mass of people stating how horrible it was as if that's fact.
For me, it was the 1st production of "Fiddler" I've seen where the characters felt like genuine, real people with true emotions and problems, rather than broad caricatures and I liked that (not that the other way isn't okay or enjoyable; this was just new & special). The general consensus, though, was that those very attributes made it "not Jewish enough" and I found that offensive. Furthermore, it was visually stunning.
But I digress =)
2008...except for Grease.

I would have to go with the 2007 season. That prodution of Company left me with my hair standing up on my arms upon my departure from the theatre. Not to mention Kristin Chenoweth bringing to life a vocally perfect version of The Apple Tree. Those are two productions I shall not soon froget. Plus 110 In the Shade and A Chorus Line are just wonderful in themselves. :]
