I'd never thought of this before now, but you're right about Susan Blackwell.
Even those who aren't [title of show] fans must admit that her voice would be amazing for the role--and there's no doubt that she could act it.

Comedy is much more difficult than tragedy-and a much better training, I think. It's much easier to make people cry than to make them laugh.

I've seen Betty Buckley play Rose...I wouldnt wish it on this production. She sang it beautifully, but didn't understand the character AT ALL...charm free.

I probably never would've thought of it on my own, but I could see her acting the hell out of the role (the vocals, I'm not so sure).

I think it's pretty funny that you all think the show is going to run until March.

- Um. The show just extended a new block of ticket sales until February, 28. And it's currently grossing much better than a lot of other shows. And I see no reason why they wouldn't just stick it out until Patti's departure.

Susan Blackwell would be the first to tell you she could never sing Rose.

I definitely wouldn't wish Betty Buckley on any other productions of GYPSY (and apparently Sondheim and Laurents weren't thrilled with her performance at Papermill).

The show will likely close with LuPone, but there are certainly any number of actresses who could take over that have more name recognition than LuPone.

LuPone leaves, the show closes. Patti would never allow someone with more name recognition that her take over the role. I doubt there we be another Broadway production of Gypsy in Mr. Laurents' lifetime

Judy Davis.

It would be a pleasure to see this show with a real actress at its helm.

I finally saw the show and thought it very uneven; the scenes without Patti were more interesting especially "If Mamma Was Married."

Otherwise Patti's acting is all over the place and "Rose's Turn" does not come as a logical conclusion; I thought Laura's laugh at the very end was more chilling and truthful than Patti's hammy perf.

Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?

Patti would never allow someone with more name recognition that her take over the role.

And Patti would have a say in the matter, why exactly?

Betty Buckley..... OUCH!!!

*SHIVERS*

As much as I was unimpressed with Laurent's kinder, gentler and ultimately gutless re-thinking of Rose coupled with LuPone's hammy, erratic performance.. they are LEAGUES ahead of Buckley's angry at the whole world approach.

I am a die hard Buckley fan and even I couldn't believe how charmless she was.

You're right! Only by "right", I mean absolutely wrong.

Asinine.

Judging by some of the recent comments in this thread, it's hard to believe some of you even saw the same production I did.

Actually it's this bizarre freak occurrence where different people have different opinions on the same performance! Imagine that!
