I really like Daphne Rubin-Vega. There's something exciting and unique about her voice, although it does seem worse for wear due to Rent aftermath strain and poor training/care.
I think she's a great actress. She made that unbearably awful play at The New Group, Everythings Turning Into Beautiful, bearable. And I thought she was perfectly suited for Bernada Alba.
I saw her version of "I Dreamed a Dream," and, needless to say, I have pretty high expectations of that song. After a few listens, I actually kind of liked some of the things she did with it. Her acting, though...not so great (at least of what I've seen).
I don't get Natalie Portman--why does she get work?
Well that's easy. She's young, white, skinny, and hot. When you're talking Hollywood, that is all it essentially takes to get a job.

Well if YOU don't like her, DON'T pay to see her, simple as that. Just because you don't get her doesn't mean she should be shot. Besides, Bernarda Alba has other people besides her in many of the songs, I'd call myself an idiot if I didn't listen to the Parade cast recording beause Christy Carlson Romano can't act her way through three songs.

Well, yeah. But there's the whole "discovered in a pizza parlor" thing, and when she said she wanted to act, her agent said "sure" and put her in a Luc Besson movie. The girl was blessed by pure happenstance. That seems the biggest factor of all. I find her tedious and bland. Actually, there aren't many actors under 35 I find all that interesting, but that's a whole other thread.
Daphne has a presence--I'm not a fan, but she is unique. Sutton's unique. Cheno's unique. Kudisch is unique. Happenstance, however, still applies. Hollywood doesn't have the monopoly on it, but in addition to dumb luck Broadway requires lots of training, talent and stamina. Motion pictures require um... um... I dunno.
I HATE when people say that. That just implies that everyone who didn't like her performance is thickheaded and a moron. Maybe some people did understand her performance, and understand all her choices as an actress, but it wasn't for them. Let's be honest, she's not for all markets. Her voice is not typical "Broadway" nor is her look. If it ain't your cup of tea, then don't get go see her. It's that simple.
I didn't see her in LES MIZ, so I can't comment about that at all.
What I can say is that each and every time I've seen her perform live, I've been amazed again and again. She's one of the few performers that I have seen multiple times that always just seems to "get it." There's a raw honesty in her performances (that has nothing to do with her "raw" voice) that enhance the entire experience. Whether it's something as silly as ROCKY HORROR, or something as complex and challening as BERNARDA ALBA or ANNA IN THE TROPICS, she's a brilliant, brilliant actress. Say what you will about her singing, but her acting is completely out of this world.

I love Daphne. I think she's a wonderful performer and person. I can certainly see why she can be mistaken as a horrible singer, though. She doesn't have a classically trained voice, and many times that has worked against her. But for the shows where it fits, it ****ing ROCKS. And have you seen her in any straight plays? That woman can ACT.
...And I just realized that the rare times I ever comment on this board anymore, it's about Daphne.

Daphne sells seats, simple as that... I admit, part of my excitement about seeing the Les Misérables revival was seeing how she preformed the role (thats why i went during previews, so i would see the whole cast)...
All ye who judge...have you seen her REAL work? Not the big flashy musicals, not the things that gave her a name, but the true artistic work that makes her a REAL actress? "F*cking A," "Between Us," "Everything's Turning...", "Anna in the Tropics," "Jack Goes Boating." I have. Multiple times. There is a depth and an honesty to her that is unmatched. Real tears, raw emotion. She is captivating and sexy in her uniqueness, and I think it is fantastic that she doesn't sound like "everyone else." Her voice and emotions are truly organic. THIS is why she works continuously. Too many people are blinded by preconceived notions and false rumors. She can tear your heart out or make you laugh solely by her expression or the way she moves her body. I'll take that any day to some classically trained, run of the mill, cardboard cut out performer.
Don't pay to see her? o.k. then....how 'bout you give me back the $150 I spent to listen to her CROAK through the show. She sucks. The entire audience was uncomfortable and WAITING for her to die. How in God's heaven can you find ANYTHING good about that voice or acting? Have you seen Jayne Paterson do the role? Then you might unerstand how excruiating it was to sit through Daphne's performance. Sorry to be mean, but there's ALOT of talent out there.....she is NOT one of them. Rent was no more than a lucky break.
I think Daphne's a good actress. Her singing voice took time for me to get used to-it's definately different-but I don't mind it. It's not the greatest voice, but I don't think it's horrible either.

Hers was probably the best all around Fantine I've every personally seen. She acted the crap out of that role and I thought it wasn't sung all that bad.
Do you think she just walked in, auditioned for some random person and got that role? They auditioned many many people for Fantine and the process was long. I'm pretty sure Cam Mac had to give that final stamp of approval on casting her. And even if he didn't, when he saw the show he could have fired her on the spot (as he pretty much did with the new Javert, Eponine and almost Mme Thenardier). So the higher ups like her.
Every time I've seen her live she's been totally electric on stage...for me there's just something about her that is very watchable.
She didn't really start out in this business to be an actress but I think she's a natural...she makes brilliant choices and I think she really raised the bar on future Fantines at least in the acting department.
Yes, her voice is from the crypt. She was fine in RENT, pretty good in Rocky Horror, and DREADFUL in Les Miserables. Why o why was she Fantine??? When she died - I peed my pants! It was soo funny! Boo!
Hahaha a dying cat thats funny and kind of accurate. I saw her in Les Miz and I was just like OMG die already. But I'm going to try and forget her performance in that and next time I see her in something go in with an open mind. ANd a longer attention span.
She goes to every audition in her Cat Scratch costume.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I definitely agree with those who say you need to see her live to appreciate her. I mean, I would listen to the Rent OBCR for years, and would think of all these better Mimi's I've seen, who sang much better than Daphne
But then I went to Rent 10, and not only did I discover that Daphne was without a doubt the best and totally stamped Mimi, but honestly outshone every single OBC performer. And that said a lot. There's so much more to her performance than her voice. Her complete honesty on the stage and in the part...her acting, her presence, her dancing (everything she was doing on the railing during Out Tonight...damn). There's so much more to Daphne than her voice.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
I personally like her and this that she keeps getting casted because of how unique her acting and singing is. Even those who dislike her can't deny how different she is (regardles off whether or not you think it is a bad/good "different").
