This was the absolute worst musical of last season. Eve much worse that bad cinderella. Why did the Tonys nominate this train wreck? Are they rigged?

They have always filled up slots even if nothing was deserving. Just look at some of the historical nominees, e.g., Grind, Pump Girls and Dinettes, Starmites, and that is all the proof I need. Add to that the credentials or Kander & Ebb, Susan Stroman, and LMM, and you have it.
I have to acknowledge that there was not really a number of slots issue, so I assume the creatives’ credentials played a big role.

I think A BEAUTIFUL NOISE should have been nominated over NEW YORK, NEW YORK...

Normally there’s only four nominees for best musical. They just threw it in there because the committee wanted to help their friends. I don’t believe it’s as democratic as they claim. The Tony’s are corrupt

NY NY wasn't a good musical but Beowulf Boritt rightfully won Tony for best scenic design, which was stunning and very inventive. No other musical of that season even came close. Perhaps it was the only great thing about this production.

The number of nominees in each category is determined by the number of eligible productions/performers/production elements in the respective category and/or a tie in the votes. It wasn’t an extra nominee just because. There wasn’t an extra slot because of corruption.

Even though I didn't like NYNY, I probably would have nominated it over the shows that didn't get nominated. There was enough to like about it (the technical design, the dancing, some of the performances) that I could get on board with a Best Musical nom. I'll never understand the nomination for Book of a Musical though.

I thought the choreo was all basic stroman which we’ve seen a thousand times before. Yawn. And I know what the Tony awards says about how they nominate, I just don’t believe them. And I don’t think there was that many new musicals last season that would have warranted 5 nominees. I think 9 new musicals? By that standard, there will be even more nominees this season.

I love these random, sometimes unhinged, rants from Broadway Flash that seem to come completely out of nowhere.

Per Tony rules, if a category has 9 elegible candidates, there will five nominees (more if there is a two- or three-way tie for the last slot). The rules are easily accessible on the Tony Awards website should you want to look them up.

In years past there was more than 9 eligible musicals and they only nominated 4. Like 2014

Also remember that “Best Musical” is really more Best Production of a Musical, as all the elements ha V d their individual categories.

Haha! I love this. Regarding the original topic, I actually think NY, NY was a missed opportunity and I was bored out of my mind, I wanted a LIZA and I didn't get a LIZA so I was not happy. But I liked it better than Bad Cinderella, Kimberly Akimbo, Some Like it Hot, Shucked. &Juliet I sorta liked, but it was also boring. I actually think my favorite Broadway musical was Beautiful Noise that year. But overall, one of the worst seasons.

it was truly a terrible season for musicals. I thought it was quite strong for plays. The fact that &juliet continues to run and has million dollar weeks is beyond me. I disliked juliet more than nyny. Kimberly and shucked were sweet but fine, and some like it hot was my favorite but lukewarm.

Such a weird, bad show, but I’m glad I got to witness it if just to see a truly grand-scale misfire.

Simple: They changed the rules since then.

I don’t like those rules. I would only nominate shows that are worthy, however many that is. If it was a very strong season, and 8 new musicals were worthy, let’s nominate all 8. If it was a weak season and only three musicals were good, then just nominate those three. If they just fill up the slots with mediocrity, it lowers the bar and no longer becomes about excellence.
