I know I'm in the minority on this lyric but I've always found it very moving. Perhaps it's because I'm getting old and I havefaceda number of intense challenges in my life. Going into those challenging experiences I faced them witha positive attitude but after I got through themandthe adrenalineworeoff I always looked back at the challengeand thought to myself, "that was a major life event, how the F*CK did I ever get through that?".
To me I think the lyric istrying to say thatwe sometimes subconsciously protect ourselves from the sometimes terrible realities and possibilities when we are confronted with a certain challenges. Afterwards, when we look back at what we've experienced we learnthat we are stronger than we realize."
That lyric has nothing to do with getting through terrible realities and possibilities. It's not AT ALL ABOUT ONCE BEING STRONGER.
That lyric is so potent-it actually is much more pertinent now with today's Republican party-it's about not doing the right thing to prop up yourself. How you convince yourself that it isn't the WRONG thing. It's the pathway to actual evil.
I'm not sure how you can misread that lyric. But as another song (and great lyric) from Wicked states: "There are precious/Few at ease/With moral/Ambiguities. "

Take your pick: celebrate return of Broadway; PBS Fundraiser; Wicked's producers spending a little bit for relatively free publicity
"Hey little girls, look at all the men in shiny shirts and no wives!" - Jackie Hoffman, Xanadu, 19 Feb 2008
Some things that made me truly laugh out loud; -Idina and Cheno being very clearly filmed separately from one another followed by the cut to five year old footage of what I'm guessing was the last time the producers got them to agree to be in the same room. -The intro to "I'm not that girl (reprise)" being longer than the actual song -Awkward editing in Gavin Creel's story about the Wicked workshop that resulted in him seeming to name drop Sutton Foster for no reason.
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

Not to mention the strange off camera gaze of Idina. Maybe it was the bangs? Did they bring in Tom Hooper for her close-up shot?

Yes, I always thought the lyric was about Glinda coming to the realization that she was the Villian of the piece. I do believe it is a very powerful line with the spare violin playing. It’s heartbreaking. However, it’s about someone waking up and not knowing who they are and how they evolved to be so disconnected and awful. Chenowith always delivered it with the most gravity IMHO.
As far as Isaac, I’m not sure where he is going to land. He’s clearly getting a lot of traction in various arenas right now. I just don’t know if he’s got the vocals to deliver consistently. I think he’s marvelous but I could easily see him becoming a television or film star and doing lots of print work. I’m not sure he’s long for the stage. He’s got mad charisma and talent. He would make much more money elsewhere.
When he and Taylor got together I didn’t grasp it. In all the anecdotes from their interviews Isaac was painted as a starry eyed fan and was clearly very smitten with a Broadway actor who was on TV. I just didn’t see how viable it would be.

It was messy and a lot of the directorial choices were inexplicable. But Isaac Powell, Stephanie Hsu, Alex Newell, Ali Stroker, and Gavin Creel were worth sitting through the rest of it.
