It all depends on if people buy tickets to see it with the replacement cast and/or they can line up a big draw after that.

The word on the street is, it will, and possibly long enough to turn into an open-ended run if, as they suspect, it turns out to have the same legs -- in terms of a running nut -- as Chicago.

With the amount of money they’ve put out for the show, with “Piano Lesson” moving and all, I can’t imagine they’d call it quits after just another 8 weeks. They have a hit on their hands and they’re gonna try to keep making those figures they’ve been making lately.

I'd assume this lasts until January 8th. They knew they could make X amount of money for the initial run of 8 weeks and already will have done that, so if they can keep making money for producers and City Center while playing a classic Sondheim musical with some of Broadway's best and a full orchestra, then keep it running for as long as they'd like! There's a world in which they get enough stars and Broadway veterans to get this to run all the way to the Tonys, with hopeful nominations for original cast members.

Be like the good old days when SS won back to back Tony’s for Company and Follies…what a tribute so soon after his death. Now, if there really is a new production of Sweeney and Merrily coming, and it’s certainly time for a new look at Night Music and Funny Think. Just no Passion or Pacific Overtures.

With the right casting choices, I can see this running into 2023. I don’t know that I see it having the legs of Chicago - while minimal in design, it’s a much more complex show and doesn’t have the deep bench of casting choices something like Chicago has - but I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong. Sondheim deserves a long-running smash hit, and ITW is the most likely of his canon to achieve that, given its wide appeal.
It’s not your traditional family fare, but this particular production is so joyful and deeply funny, I can see it changing the show’s reputation for being a bit of a downer after intermission. It’s got word of mouth you couldn’t buy if you wanted to and a great track record of casting so far, so… we'll see!

I would hope it extends through the holidays at minimum. I'd love to see a scenario where cast members rotate in and out as they become available. Julia Lester mentioned she'd be interested in that in one of her interviews this past week.

My guess is they're able to keep it running through the holidays. But let's not forget that Sondheim revivals have not had typically long legs. As much as we love them, they don't sell the same way a Chicago does. So even with the buzz, I can't see how lasts more than 6-7 months or so. But hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

I have to disagree with you. I don’t think I know a single person who has not loved Chicago for decades. I think the audience for ITW (not just Act 1) is more limited. I know many people who were bored when they saw it. Even the original production, which was probably Sondheim’s second longest running show played to a lot of empty seats after running 9 or so months. I really don’t think it appeals to the general audience who attends a show 2 - 3 years times a year, all of whom love Chicago.
I have to admit that I was bored frequently when I saw the original production early in its run, especially in the second act (even though I like the music in the second act more), and that it is towards the bottom of my ranking of SS musicals, in terms of enjoyment, although I like it more than I used to…ironically, thanks to the movie, and the fast forward feature that allows me to skip through the scenes I still find boring).

It's also an insanely complex score to sing/perform. That's why you need Broadway veterans. I don't think you plug in a TikTok star or a reality stare and have them deliver this.

My hope is that it extends to at least Tony time, and that they get most of the original principals backs for another run to get them back in the minds of Tony voters.

That would require that it run much longer than Company just did, in a smaller house no less.

I think Into the Woods has the potential to run longer than Company. It has much broader appeal and is arguably a better known Sondheim show. And casting changes will pull in some repeat visitors.
