I'm not one of the ones who say 'it's the best movie in the whole world,' just that I don't mind that a movie-musical produced in the year 2005 is paced or perceived as a 'long music video.' Kindly direct your anger (or arguments, or defensiveness, or whatever) elsewhere, thanks.

Well, people who love it love it for its passion and emotion and they don't really care about the technical aspects of it. I think you are getting a little defensive now Bwaystar :)

My don't we feel superior Bwaystar. Nobody's saying you have to like the movie, but insulting posters who do is going to get you nowhere.

At least the stage show manages to pull the wool over people's eyes where it weaknesses lie, and tries for something artistic. The film, on the other hand, had glaring weaknesses with its direction
Evelyn makes a point that I've been saying all along as well. The stage version is flawed, but well-executed. The movie fixed none of the stage show's flaws, created more, and executed it terribly.
Not everyone knows Rent inside/out, or humps their OBC of Rent daily...
OMG! BobbyBubby that was priceless!
Relax guys. Don't take up arms against each other because of your opinions. If you don't like Rent, fine. Those who do should just shrug and say okay. If everyone liked everything in this world, well, it would be a boring place.
Rent has been around 10 ten years and its not going anywhere. Even with criticism, it has and will continue to be running for a long time. Jonathan Larson's dream lives on.

Enough with this CRAP already. I love how they try to look so high and mighty, calling it the worst "filmed musical" of the year; one of two, no? UGH.

Kids, can we move on please? It's like you all are asking for drama now.

so this critic was saying the movie was really bad? And look that at, only a month behind everyone else who has a valid opinion on the movie.
Oh my God, do we really need to go through this again? Opinion. Subjective. The only way someone's opinion of the movie could be invalid is if they didn't see it; it's not invalid if it's not the same of yours; the stupidity behind that snide comment is absurd. If you really want to say something that stings, make sure it makes sense.
Don't tell me that I'm saying you can't have your opinion, and so on and so forth. Have it, but don't call the opposite invalid; it doesn't do anything to validate yours, that's for sure. We've been here, and we've had the fight; I'm sorry that you hated the movie, but that's your prerogative. I'm not going to have the same argument with you again, because it was full of misunderstanding and was more frustrating than necessary -- PLUS, it's clear that it's just useless. I'm just so sick of it being implied that if you liked the movie your opinion is worthless or that you're stupid. It's pathetic already.
Come on. Common sense.

Let's talk about the best filmed movie musical of the year. I vote REEFER MADNESS (that was THIS year, right?)

i agree with the reviewer... they all looked too old to play 20 somethings... but then again with the exception of Mimi... nobody's age is ever implied in the show... there can be a huge debate that can go in circles... but for me... if a character calls for someone being in their 20s and they OBVIOUSLY don't look 20... it's going to bother me big time... no matter how good an actor is... if they can't pull of a role that is physical specific then they shouldn't do it..
I still haven't seen Reefer Madness.
And I'm serious; people think that going "well, your opinion is just... just... dumb!" and saying that it's invalid is going to like... raise theirs up higher and make it look better or something. It ends up just making them looks stupid.

You said none of the characters are age-specific, except for Mimi. I certainly think Rosario can pull off being around twenty, so by your logic, it's fine, because she is the only one that is age-specifc. If by your logic, their casting is fine, then why does it bother you? Not to mention that you said first only Mimi has a specific age, and then you went on to imply that the characters *should* be in their twenties.
You sound like you're just thinking out loud, but I think you just started that circular argument. Again.

>>>It seems a great effort was made to adapt to all the audiences who would have the potential to appreciate it in any way.<<<
See, this is exactly where I think Columbus fell short. As someone said upthread, the show is executed on stage in a manner that you can overlook the deficiencies of the book, particularly on a narrative level--especially the case if you have a good cast performing it. I love the stage show, but it definitely has a lot of room for improvement as far as beefing up narrative and characterization issues and such--something that is magnified on film, without the electricity of live performance to glaze it over and make it forgiveable. Rent the stage show is a great jumping off point for film, but what made Columbus's film fall short for me was that he mostly left it as is, as such not doing a terribly good job of moving it to the world of film and hence conveying how special Larson's work is to those unfamiliar with it live.

That's alright, I haven't seen RENT yet.
But with all these reviews, I feel like I don't have to!

Kind of funny, after seeing the movie I told my best friend it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. And I still hold that opinion. I saw no flaws in it at all.
omgosh, ENOUGH already! it's either u like it or u don't. leave it at that. there's no need to get mean, nasty, and downplay ppl because of their opinons. seriously, it's getting old already.

I've just sort of accepted that other people won't like the movie and I'm okay with that because I personally loved it. Did I love it because I'm a huge fan of the show? Maybe. Would I have liked it without knowing the show? I couldn't say.
However, as a "Renthead", or whatever you want to call it, this kind of bothered me. Even though it's probably mostly sarcasm
"Close enough. You all like the same 6 shows."
Let me tell you that there exist Rent fans who like a wide variety of shows. My top 3 favourite shows are Rent, Sweeney Todd, and Urinetown. I also enjoy Oklahoma, Into the Woods, The Last Five Years, Batboy, The Sound of Music, Sunday in the Park, and The Light in the Piazza.
A lot of us love Rent, AND know its flaws. We aren't all closeminded "Rent is the only good show evar!" fangirls/boys.

You know, you guys complain about Rentheads, and their obsession about as much as Renheads complain about bad reviews of the movie. It's time YOU guys get over it, state your case and then shut it, you're no better than those that blindly defend the movie. Get over yourselves ALL of YOU.
I liked the movie...I didnt see anything wrong with it. except in the beginning of La Vie Boheme when the waiter and Mark dont sing about how he "Sits all night you never buy!" I wish they had sung that. ANd they shortened goodbye love a ton
