I guess I am the only one to find White's speech totally "ain't I a funny gal" overly rehearsed. Annoying and loud and the kind of acceptance speech that give "ACTORS" a bad name. Kudos to her on her win though.
The one about the thing. I hated that speech. Sucked ass.
Wasn't Christine Ebersole out sick from the show? Geez bitter tweens, give the woman a break.

The last one was funny, becuase the music cut them off but they were still talking. I just found that amusing because it almost seemed like they didn't know the music had cut them off.
Well not only did the music cut them off ... but they cut their mic too.
At any rate ... i really dont get the tirate on Usher. He's been on broadway, been a singer for a while, is at least a B class star. And bringing up a sports team? Who cares? David Hyde Pierce brought up the Sopranos.
I will agree that it was one of the WORSES intros ... because it seemed soo clumsy not because he shouldnt be there.
Btw if you dont think Usher should be there do you think Zach Braff should have?
Definitely Ben Vereen and Usher. Um, you're there to present an award, not tell us about your life stories, guys... seriously, not the place.
I didn't like Usher and Ben Vereen's presentation either. I was wondering the whole time what they were rambling about.
Rath, I notcied that too (about Ebersole). Hers wasn't the worst speech of the evening by any means, but it was a little flat.
What does being out sick have to do with writing a boring acceptance speech, HOU? And I haven't been a bitter tween in over 30 years, dear. I'm a much-less-bitter middle-ager now.
I had no problem with Ebersole's. The woman has been giving acceptance speeches for over a year now...what's left to say?
Amen! And she was gracious. (I remember what she said because I relished every moment. And Mary Louise's sticks out, too.)
I also think her tendency is probably to be polished. She doesn't strike me as spontaneous like Julie White or Mary Louise Wilson.(At least she didn't say, "I knew I was going to win.") Ps-she gave the best performance at GG that afternoon!

While I enjoyed Christine Ebersole's speech, she gave almost word for word the same speech at last year's Drama Desk awards.
Steven Sater was the worst for me - my gaydar went up in to the stratosphere! He was, er, very strange!!!

He owes Audra an apology because he said "Audrie MacDonald"
I hate it when people get all excited and/or nervous because they won an award. It's so pretentious. Don't they know it's not about them? It's what we want them to say that really counts.

I know this is supposed to be about the 'worst' speeches, but I just want to say that I LOVED Frank Langella's speech.
'I had no problem with Ebersole's. The woman has been giving acceptance speeches for over a year now...what's left to say?'
Actually...she hasn't given an acceptance speech in OVER a year. Plenty of time to freshen up the material.
"What does being out sick have to do with writing a boring acceptance speech, HOU?"
First of all, you don't know if she wrote one, but who cares if she did. What's wrong with being prepared? Maybe that's an extension of why she got the award. She prepared for the role and did her research and came to rehearsal prepared and had a lot of input to give the character life onstage.
What? You'd rather see a person rambling a stream of conscious for 90 seconds or more because it sounds more humble and deserving?
Usually when I'm sick, I take things as easy as possible. I don't know the circumstances, but she could have been on medication. She may have decided to use another speech she did before instead of being quirky, spontaneous and funny because...SHE WAS SICK!!! I'm not usually very funny or even very energetic when I'm sick.
I didn't think she was boring at all. She's the epitome of a trooper and a true professional. No, she wasn't a standout, but I didn't think the purpose of a Tony speech was to be the best or funniest. And all people don't react to winning in the same way. Not everyone can be comedians in that certain moment.
Sater was odd, but he was practically having an emotional breakdown. Geez, give the guy a break. He was happy.
I was expecting a speech from Ebersole to be a tad more lively than it was. Yes, she was sick, but she just won a Tony Award.
...Mary Louise Wilson was fabulous. She was honest and totally adorable.
And as for Christine, can we just give her a break? She's amazing, she knows it, we know it, the Tony voters knew it. Her speech was just fine because it was HERS--who are we to expect anything from her?

I'm not sure about the 'worst' speech - but I LOVED David Hyde Pierces speech.

Can someone fill me in on what exactly the "Sater's wife" thing was about? I missed the majority of his speech. Thanks.

well i think the fact that he has a wife was an interesting part...

Hah, I assumed he said that as a tongue-in-cheek joke.
Why, oh why? It seems that there is a tendency to come up with the most negative posts on this board. Which show should close, which one is overrated. Which actor is rude...yada yada. For a board that purports to support theater, there seems to be an overabundance of posts related to "the worst" of whatever.
Geez, guys. First of all, if you've never had the opportunity to get up on a stage and splutter and stammer trying to think of the words you so carefully rehearsed when you thought you MIGHT win an award...it is really unfair to criticize someone else for being less than articulate or going on and on. You try it sometime and see how YOU do!
"Now we just need to get John McMartin a Tony. He has been screwed over TOO MUCH."
I kept saying he should have been nominated. He would have won too. He wasn't even NOMINATED for Follies. What a travesty!
