I love Sondheim and William Finn and Jason Robert Brown. But Rodgers and Hammerstein do great work too. Love love Comden and Green musicals (with the exception of Wonderful Town) and there is Gershwin because he created Porgy and Bess and that is simply a masterpiece!
And of course Adam Guettel. That music is sooooo beautiful.

musicaltheatre1, what did Oscar Hammerstein compose music for?

That's a tough question because I think every composers has had hits and misses. I'd have to say Sondheim - soley based on Sunday in the Park with George, I'm not a HUGE sondheim fan like most people. And Maury Yeston because i think he writes some gorgeous melodies. And LaChiusa for taking some obscure subjects and making them into rather fine musicals. Not JRB fan at all, I just can't get into his music. And I wouldn't consider Guettel my favorite yet because he's only had one major staging of his work.
I don't have one favorite but I have a top 10: (Count Tesori twice)
1. Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez
2. Jeanine Tesori
3. Gerard Alessandrini- For creating the funniest lyrics to all my favorite shows.
4. Marc Shaiman
5. Jerry Herman
6. Rogers and Hart/Hammerstein
7. Comden and Green
8. Sondheim
9. Schwartz
These are my top favorites.

Sondheim and Gershwin are definitely my top two. I'm sure I could come up with a top five (or ten) list, but it would be nothing but 2 and 3-way ties the whole way down!
Sondheim, then Cole Porter and Gershwin tied for second.
Stephen Sondheim
Kander & Ebb (can I really be the first to mention them???)
Jason Robert Brown
Adam Guettel
George Gershwin
Cole Porter
I'm kind of on a Duncan Sheik high right now.
