I saw it in previews and it knocked my socks off. A pre-Little Mermaid Jodi Benson stopped the show with "Disneyland." And I remember laughing my head off at Howard Ashman's lyrics, and loving his direction as well. (He served double-duty on that one.) Marvin Hamlisch was no slouch either.
Trouble is, Les Mis opened very shortly afterward (like 2 weeks, or something) and killed it. Sort of like when A Chorus Line opened and stole all of Chicago's thunder. I don't remember Smile getting rotten reviews, it just didn't get raves. Critics were just lukewarm about it, so it came and went pretty quickly. Too bad. At the time I saw it, I kept thinking it was going to be a big hit! Boy, was I wrong.

After I first saw All Shook Up with my mom, she seemed to only think of it as ok, but I liked it alot, but then we went back with my sister this time and we all had a good time and we laughed and laughed and laughed.

I really like "Flower Drum Song" which is usually deemed the most minor of Rodgers & Hammerstein's achievements; but personally I feel it is their best score.

Hey, I love HIGH SPIRITS! There are some very delightful songs in that score! I was lucky enough to pick up the CD just before it went out of print. Decca Broadway is supposed tobe remastering it with bonus tracks. We'll see..
Praying Decca Broadway will put "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope" on CD!
