One of the best shows I've ever seen. May it have a very long, healthy run!
"I'm thinking about how if you took the W in
answer, and the H in ghost, and the extra A in aardvark, and the T in listen, you could keep saying WHAT but no one would ever hear you because the whole word would be silent."

Window cards, t-shirts (I think there are two versions?)... I think I saw magnets, hats, the usual. There's probably more stuff now that it's open, though.
Uuuuum, they're navy blue, I believe. And they say "you could drive a person crazy," but I'm not sure if that's on the front or the back. I think it's the back, and then the front has the logo with the blocks. They've got everything in the lobby on the way in, so you can't miss it.

Absolutely fantastic. I can't say enough about Raúl's incredible performance. Completely heartbreaking and powerful in every sense of the word. That ending felt so perfect to me.
Aside from that, yes, the southern accent was terrible. But it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the show, at least!
"Oh, good. After all, I can rub my stomach and pat my head at the same time, and I can do it with my eyes closed while whistling 'The Entertainer.' That's rhythm for you."
~ Snaps, proving that White Boys CAN have rhythm
Saw the show for the second time on Sunday, Dec 17. First time was the opening night of previews. The show has gotten even better! I think they changed "Side By Side" a bit, didn't notice much else, if anything, changed. Looks like a well-deserved Tony for Raul! The rest of the cast is also outstanding. Had the understudy for Marta, she did a great job!
The type of show that you can see over and over and not tire of it... A rarity nowadays.
I saw it Thursday night and was unimpressed by the production. The actor-musician concept doesn't add anything to the piece. Raul Esparza was amazing and Barbara Walsh was very good. The rest of the cast were fine but not great.
I can only hope that the mixed reviews signal the end of the actor-musician concept on Broadway.
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
Bringing back "an oldie but a goodie," so to speak.
This thread sort of hit a lull shortly after opening, but it served as a good place to compile Company-related news and things for those interested, so I decided to revive it in light of some recent things popping up on that front.
Also, Kristin Huffman (who plays Sarah) has a new column on BWW, called "ActorQuest." She's been writing stories about her experiences in the industry for a while and is now publishing them in her column. She has a great sense of humor, which is evident in her writing. The column is just getting on its feet, so I wanted to help get the word out, because she's great and her stories are really funny. It runs every Friday, and you can get to it from a link on the main page, so be on the lookout for new stories each week and leave a comment if you like what you read!
Here's last week's. You can get to the other ones from this link as well, I believe.
Hmmm, interesting. Do the tracks in quotations, such as "You Have a Good Third Husband, Joanne" imply that these will be spoken scenes? Or is there music in these scenes? I can't remember. Might we be getting "the scream" on cd?
"Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. Want something. Want something."
Yeah, I wonder how the CD will flow with such a small number of book scenes, but those two are certainly important ones to have chosen, because they set up each of the two act finales. The "what do you get?" scene will probably launch right into Being Alive, which is going to be great. I wonder if Another Hundred People will have the dialogue built in or if it will just go straight through the song.
Yeah, I did notice that! I don't know if this was mentioned earlier in the thread or if they changed it during the run, but when I saw it again tonight I realized that they cut a verse or so from "Side By Side be Side."
A friend of mine mentioned they cut part of Side by Side, but then when I went last week I didn't notice that anything was cut. Does anyone know what's missing? It's been bothering me...
That's bothering me, too. I know the Side by Side staging changed quite a bit (I saw the show the week it changed and posted about it in this thread), but I don't think anything was cut. And I've seen that show several times. I feel like I'm going crazy... I don't remember a cut.
I finally saw this and agree with most of what has already been posted in this thread (good time, Raul was great, stop playing instruments, etc.) but I had to give a review of the audience members near me. I enjoyed the show, they did not and they were quite vocal about it at intermission. Not a big deal, tastes differ. One of the ladies said "Well, it was no Phantom of the Opera" and my husband and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing. This isn't a knock on Phantom, but I don't think I could have picked two more disparate shows - why on earth did they think one would be comparable to the other? Her friend responded with how much they hated the last 4 shows they had seen and at $100+ a ticket, it was a sin that these shows weren't better. She said "at least at the movies it's only $10 and we have a better time". Then why are you here? Do you read ANYTHING about a show before dropping a couple of hundred on a night's entertainment? After 4 duds in a row, I think part of the problem rests on you!
Don't be too sure I'm as crooked as I'm supposed to be.
I have a question about audience reactions. I think "Side by Side by Side/ What Would We Do without You?" is a fun song but no one around me seemed to get involved in it. Has anyone seen or heard an audience reaction during this song?
I always hear people laugh a lot, but only really at moments. The cool thing about that number, to me, is that with the staging that so desperately isolates Bobby, it goes from hilarious to heartbreaking in a matter of seconds. One moment you're laughing -- when Bobby blows into the kazoo -- and the next, your heart breaks for him because he's trying to join in, but alone.
