There was a Make-A-Wish event at our show on Saturday afternoon. A 10 year old girl from Oklahoma was 'granted the wish' of dancing in a Broadway musical.

She was incorporated into the entire "Madison" scene and joined in dancing with the cast for the last big section (called "The Grand Madison")

oh, and by the way...she was GOOD!!

I am leaving all names and specifics about the girl out of this posting, but I'm sure I speak for the entire HAIRSPRAY team in L.A when I write that we are forever grateful to have been part of this moment, for both this sweet child and her family. I know I went home humbled and feeling quite ashamed to complain about ANYTHING in my life.

I post this to answer the posts and PM's I have recieved and not to milk "good for you's" from you guys, so hopefully no one will misinterpret it negatively in that way.

And I posted it On-Topic because yesterday I saw the profound joy that "singin' and dancin'" in a show can bring. It's a blessing we should all cherish.

That's so sweet. It must have been so magical for her. It's wonderful that her wish got to come true, especially with such a fantastic and fun show. Wow... Can you imagine? -Penny

That's so sweet, I'm so happy for the girl.

If I was there, I probably would have started crying buckets. I'm totally a sucker for those kind of happy moments.

That's so nice that she got her wish. I couldn't imagine dancing in a Broadway show at this age, she must have had a blast up there.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

That is too wonderful. Good for her!

When I was 11, my friend was on rollerblades and was hit by a car. She became paralyzed and lost some mentality. She was granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and went to Disney World to be a Grand Marshall at the parade.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

My friend that I went to see Hairspray in LA with a few weeks ago called me yesterday and said that Channel 2 there had showed this Make A Wish news and had live pics of the cast in the show and an interview with the little girl and said that several of the news stations had picked up on it as a human intrest story. WAY TO GO Marc Shaiman and cast, what a wonderful thing to do for someone, and I am sure it took time for the costume people and the cast to have extra rehearsals. I told ya'll that the cast had real chemistry, now you know why, only a "family" would go the extra mile to do such a good deed. My friend said the little girl's smile was huge! and that's all ladies and gents, have a good week.

I do a lot of work with Make-a-wish and as Marc said, it is a humbling experiance -- there are many stories like this that make all of your "issues" seem meaningless when you learn what these kids are dealing with everyday.

I urge any and all of you to help out this fund as much as possible -- they do great things for great kids....

Thanks Marc!

Marc,

Was there any coverage in the LA Times or other paper?

What a wonderful experience that must have been for all.

(a hot one)! Still wondering if she is single? lol but anyways, glad to hear about this, glad to know the cast of HAIRSPRAY is as wonderful off the stage in "real" life. Cheers!

Make-A-Wish is such a great organization. Sometimes it means more to the people who make a wish come true than it does to those being helped. I know you didn't want this but yopu're going to get one "way to go!" Marc, and a great big hug!

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

That's amazing! I am so happy that everyone got to be part of that experience. I can say right now my wish would be to play Link Larkin on broadway for one performance. So glad that the girl got to be part of the show, and even moreso that she was great!

Actually Broadwayguy2, I have read your posts, so you are right, again! (As Always) lol But, I lurked here for a long time before posting, I love the ARTS in general, and have a real passion for Film. By the way, the last post, it is my understanding that Make A Wish is for CHILDREN and young teens with life threatening, dibilatating and terminal diseases, not just to make some ones dream come true. People who have the ability and health to work hard, meet the demands of their daily life to make their dream come to fruition, and by the way dude, it does not mean as much if you are a healthy person just to be handed a dream or a job, and are just too lazy to get out there and work for what you want, and take classes, go to school, go to tons of auditions, get rejected over and over, and then when it happens, it REALLY means soemthing to you,No matter what job you are seeking. ok, off my soapbox now and off to work while I still have a great job!

How very true.... working and hard and then getting it means SOO much when it happens.

I was never apart of make A Wish, but as a child, I was part of the Children's Miracle Network, due to my having asthma... it was BAD when I was young, and I had many great experiences through them.. including going tpo camp every summer (for a week only, but hey...)
