Sorry for another Ben Platt thread. Feel free to merge if need be. I will be the first to admit that I have seen better singing performances. However, Platts performance in DEH is the best acting performance I have seen in person. I can't imagine anyone coming close to him this season. Is there better performance this season?
The only other acting performance I have seen in person that comes close was Alex Sharp in Curious Incident

Well there are shows that have not yet opened who knows someone will have a better perf! I'm not ready to just give it to Ben Platt just yet.

Well, technically, the award is for best actor, not best singer...
I'll always want an act that can sell a song, instead of a singer whose acting is subpar.
He'd have a better chance if the show opened closer to Award time.
His well-deserved "buzz" could cool down by May.
He's as sure a thing to win as I've ever seen. I don't think it matters what other shows open this year. He's going to win and he more than deserves it.
I may see Miss Saigon and I know Jon Jon is transferring with the production. Could he beat Ben Platt? He sounds fantastic on the cast album.

I wouldn't rule out Jake's performance in Sunday (little surprised you are, Jordan). It was fantastic for a run of only a handful of performances, I can only imagine what it'll be like after an extended rehearsal period.

just because he may sound amazing on a cast album does not mean he even could be nominated for a tony.....What Ben Platt is doing on the stage of the Music Box is a revelation to theatre.

This is the same canard people were coming out with right about now last year in re Hamilton. Platt has as much of a chance as Hamilton did. There is no scheduled performance this season that is better, or anywhere close. miss saigon? that's a good laugh. I am guessing you have seen neither show.

What does it mean "a revelation to theater"??! I've seen DEH and I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would and Ben Platt is awesome in the part, but I didn't feel any revelation! Anyways I've seen Jon Jon in Miss Saigon in the West End and thought he was very good there. I'm planning to watch the show on Broadway too. And there's Andy Karl in GHD. The one negative I see for the last two is they didn't star in US originated shows and there may be a bias for that. We shall see

He's in his early 20s and delivering one of the most remarkable performances of the last 25 years. It's a done deal.

Andy Karl Christian Borle will give him pause possibly not much.
And I disagree about groundhog day doing well at the box office. I think it will have a tough time unless it wins the tony.
I'm predicting a Best Actor category as follows:
Christian Borle
Jon Jon Briones
Jake Gyllenhaal
Andy Karl
Ben Platt
And Platt will win easily. Dear Evan Hansen honestly wasn't my cup of tea entirely (though I strongly appreciate the work it's doing), but Platt's running away with this Tony. And so will Rachel Bay Jones for Featured Actress.

Also emotionally impactful performances are usually much more likely to win awards than mainly comedic performances.
Still too early to call. Don't assume any performance to be subpar/inferior until you've actually seen it. I agree Ben is a revelation, but why does it hurt so many to have or expect more revelations on Broadway?
Dancing, these are not unknown performances.
I think that he's almost a lock for best actor the same way that Cynthia Erivo was last year. Yeah, there were other brilliant performances, but there was definitely a stand out.
I agree with broadwayconcierge...Rachel seems to be a favorite with the critics and fans, expecting a nom and hopefully a win from her too! Ugh this show and performances the actors give are too good...can't complain though!
As much as I adored Rachel, I couldn't take my eyes off of Jennifer Laura. To me, SHE is the one who I would give a Best Supporting Actress award to.

No Josh Groban?

Unless Borle is a revelation as Willy Wonka, I'd swap him with Josh Groban. I doubt Borle will be nominated for his work in Falsettos.
