Seems like the should have the leading player tell Pippin that he is almost too old to play the part, like she does to Catherine. LOL
based on those photos I'm guessing Mann will be out all week and Colin Cunliffe will be on as Charles. Billy Tighe looks like he was on in Cunliffe's track. And it looks like Erica Mansfield was on for Bethany Moore.
To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of Kyle Dean Massey. I've seen him in Next to Normal and Wicked, and he was always fine, but I never got that extra something special from him. Still, I really want to get back and see Pippin, and I'm hoping this show will change my opinion of him.

He looks even older next to Ciara.

I don't really see the issue with KDM's age - he reads young on stage (and in the photos-quite frankly I don't see it) - but for a place where people are always bragging about supporting 'color blind' casting and how theatre can allow you to 'suspend belief' it is interesting to see what 5 or 6 years can do to people's attitudes.
How was his performance?
This is completely a tech question, but I didn't think it warranted it's own thread. Can anyone explain the reasoning why some of the cast wears forehead mics versus the headsets 90% of them wear? I find it visually distracting.
it probably has to do with the shape of the wigs. matthew james thomas and I'm assuming kyle dean massey wear headsets because they don't wear wigs.

Re: Kyle Dean's age
A quick Google search tells me he's 32. MJT is 26.
Ciara graduated from college in 2013, so she's probably 22. That's a big gap for her and Kyle Dean.

Ok, I've seen the current Pippin production 3 times, with a different Berthe each time. While Annie Potts was cute she didn't steal the show like Andrea and Tovah did.
KDM while looks incredible in the shirtless scenes, just isn't believable to me. Maybe it's his age or that he just sounds super gay. I am gay, so I think I am allowed to say that without being homophobic. He just doesn't cut it as a straight guy to me.
Well, you do know that not all straight guys 'act' the same way, right?
I won't see him for another week, and while I'm sure he can sing the hell out of the score, I worry he'll be too old. We'll see.
" Maybe it's his age or that he just sounds super gay. I am gay, so I think I am allowed to say that without being homophobic. "
Thank you for clarifying why you're allowed to say that. I dunno, lots of Pippins have seemed kinda gay to me (I'm gay so am allowed to say that) but it's not like I can't buy an actor playing straight due to his singing voice.
Why doesn't Annie Potts steal the show the way Tovah and Andrea did?
Something that Andrea brought just stole the show- Having Seen all three- Tovah and Annie, while great, did not have that same effect.
Hopefully when I see him in person, he will look younger- the pictures that have been taken all read 30 year old, not late teens, early twenties. in my eyes, he's about 10 years too old for the part- some people can get away with it because they look young (Stark Sands may be in his 30's, but he passed for early twenties in Kinky Boots- Andy Kelso on the other hand looked like he was in his 40's and too old for Charlie.) He's good looking- but he looks his age.
Annie Potts IS still in the show? I'm so glad...I wasn't sure. I saw the original cast when they were still here in Boston, but am thrilled to be seeing a new take, and esp. Potts.
I think the reason that Annie and Tovah are less show stopping is by now the "trick" isn't so much of a surprise as when the show opened.

Addendum, just because you're gay really doesn't excuse that comment. I never understood why people thought he played strictly gay, he plays an ingenue male better than just about anyone.
That is my guess too.
My problem with Kyle is his ego.
Goood Golly! I didn't realize Ciara was so young! Her Broadway debut was Big Fish and now she is starring in this gigantic show with this humungous role and she is only 22? Jesus. I had to look up what college she went to, I figured it would be Carnegie Mellon but I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was Baldwin Wallace. Just goes to show that even the brightest stars don't always go to the "top" schools.
"My problem with Kyle is his ego. "
you must have a problem with a lot of Broadway performers, then.
Oh don't even start. No I don't have a problem with many Broadway performers, I just didn't like how he came off when I met him. He's a great performer, he just isn't someone I would like to spend lots of time with.
Do give detail. I have only met the man a few times at the stage door but never really had much to say to him as he never really stood out to me or anything in the shows I saw him in- just the quick exchange.
