Here is my thoughts. If they can bring back the whole cast, plus more like I said and they advertise the heck out of it. It could work.
I remember reading somewhere that when Hairspray first came out they were reluctant to advertise due fear of how it would work.
This MIGHT work.

NOO!! as much as i LOVE hairspray i have to say a big NO NO to this.. sequels justn never end well, why can't people just stick with the original and be happy?
Because then they'd have less money.

Shaiman usually comes a calling when his name is uttered. Didn't he post while he was on an African safari once?
Either way - it's going to make money, good or bad.

As another huge HAIRSPRAY fan, this also worries me. I want to.. and should be.. excited but I'm just not. At least Marc is involved. He will not let this go forward unless it is top notch and 'holds up' to the Hairspray name.
Are they hoping this will help keep the show going on Broadway even longer? It takes a LONG time for a movie to go from development to release. And as much as I'm IN LOVE with HAIRSPRAY, I don't think it would still be around when.. and if.. the sequel came out ("See how the story all began on Broadway!").
How can you top an ending like "You Can't Stop The Beat" anyways?!

Hairspray 2: You CAN Stop The Beat
In all seriousness, I'm withholding an opinion until I get a plot synopsis. It's no use worrying until the plot is revealed.
zamedy , You don't think the show will still be going in 2010?

Good idea, in fact why don't all of you withhold an opinion until the film is actually written, directed, edited, premiered, plays 5000 screens worldwide, is bootlegged in China, released on DVD, then special edition DVD, plays HBO, the the late late show, until you can download it on you your wrist watch phone/mp3 player? How ridiculous you all sound, it's a movie. Let the pros do their job. What have you done Marc? You've reduced fives of people sleepless for the next three years! Shame on you!

Unless you think it's gonna be good. Then you should vocalize all the opinions you want, right?
"Unless you think it's gonna be good. Then you should vocalize all the opinions you want, right?"
Of course! Don't you know positive opinions are the only valid ones?
Seriously, this doesn't sound like a good idea to me, but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
I believe that the sequel should revolve entirely around Prudy Pingleton, as long as she's once again played by Allison Janney.
Would be interesting to see if they could incorporate It Takes Two and Mamma I'm A Big Girl Now. . .
Amen, Mandi Moo. Hairspray 2: Prudy's Turn To Cry. Watch as Prudy struggles to fight for segregation and save her daughter from that evil Tracy Turnblad.

Honestly, I don't think Marc will comment on this yet since it's only in the development stages...
Two words:
Greas 2
Two more:
Staying Alive
One word:
Hairspray
I have a better idea. They hire Harvey to play Edna and the world will be great again.
Or Harvey could come back as Edna's Mother and it could be funny.
Ricki Lake could be in it again as Tracy's teacher.

Hey kids!
They've simply hired John Waters to write a treatment. That is like a marriage proposal (and an exciting one), but it is not a birth announcement.
But, ya' have to admit, it's impressive that the movie studio actually came to the creators (of the film) to do this. That is practically unheard of in Hollywood (think GREASE 2). And Lord knows Scott & I could write songs for these characters (and any new ones John Waters dreams up!) for the rest of our lives.
So, keep your fingers crossed that it happens, and if it does happen that it doesn't suck ass.

Thanks, Marc. We'll keep our fingers crossed for the very best!
JP2 - Believe me.. I hope HAIRSPRAY will still be open come 2010 but I have no idea. Next month marks its 6th anniversary on Broadway (an amazing feat in itself. I believe it is now the 20th longest running show in Broadway history!!). Can it hold on for another few years through a poor economy and the openings of newer, big name musicals? Lord I hope so.

Ahahaha! That was amazing. Thanks, Marc!
Thanks Marc. Get out there and write some good stuff.
I am a huge fan of the stage show and the movie, and I agree that these characters have more to say.
Do it. Do it. Do it.
Why why why! It ended on a good note. just leave it alone. I'm going into suclusion. Come get me when the world makes sense again.
Im curious....and slightly nauseus. I wonder when the plot will be revealed.
Edna could have a sex change!
Songs will include:
Good Morning Balls, two more!
Wilbur, I'm a Boy Now
Welcome to My Dickie
and of course, the big finale,
I Can't Stop the Beating
