I wish I had an essay about the writing, choreography, lighting, set design, costumes, etc. Of each show as we do with the Hamilton book. I'm being entirely serious and non-snarky. Reading about the process gave me a whole new depth of appreciation for the subtle choices that were made. I'm sure the same thought has gone into the decisions for all these shows, so I wish I could get insight into the process. It's fascinating to me since I have no gift for such creativity.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I believe the Color Purple should win but She Loves Me will win. I saw the original Color Purple and would describe it as bulky and clunky. The production distracted from the material. This new production is so simplistic and seamless that it reinvigorated the material. In my opinion, that is how a revival should be judged. For those who have seen other productions of the She Loves Me, is this revival drastically different or a standard interpretation of the material?
jakebloke said: "I imagine Hamilton will win for Best Scenic Design, however it will just be an example of the voters trying to give Hamilton as many awards as possible. It definitely won't deserve that one. Should win? American Psycho, or even She Loves Me.
Same thing for Lighting. Hamilton will likely get it.....just because it's Hamilton. American Psycho should get it.
I haven't seen Hamilton, and I would like to see it (I just hope I'm not disappointed with the build up of the show), but from what I've seen I have to agree with you jakebloke. I think for some of the categories Hamilton will get the award because it's Hamilton, and because it has such a strong following. This is my opinion. I think they shouldn't win best costume or best set design. The costumes? Eh I feel like there nothing special about them. Okay the set it two tiers. What about the musicals that change their sets every scene? When I think of set designs I think of the beautiful props, backdrops and lighting.
I'd like to know what rubric or points are looked at when nominating and deciding a winner for the Tony's. I think I'm just upset that there's a chance Hamilton will sweep the Tony's. They might as well call it the Hamilton Awards! I like variety, and for everyone to have their moment in the spot light.
To be fair, the lighting design in Hamilton is brilliant. So brilliant that I'd say it's one of the best 5 things about the show. I have no qualms whatsoever about it winning that award. It definitely doesn't deserve all the technical awards though.
Set should absolutely go to Psycho. The fact that they shut it out of all the awards except this shows that even they were like "woah" at the design. It's beautifully done.
And all I care about is Carmen Cusack winning. She's a star and a diva. And I cannot wait to see what else she does.

I'm just saying that there were other performances other than Hamilton this year. Keep in mind there was 2014 where two people from Gentlemen's Guide were nominated, who were by the way stunning in their performances, and they still lost to Neil Patrick Harris. Then there was last year where three actresses from Fun Home were noinated, again all deserving of the award, but lost. The Tony nominations this year weren't "We need to nominate other shows to throw off that Hamilton is going to win in each category." There are diverse tastes on Broadway, and any one of the people who were nominated could win on Tony night.
But just as people should be realistic that Hamilton probably wont win everything, you should be realistic in realizing it's probably going to win more than 5, including at least one acting award.

And NPH was always the favorite.
"
No, I'm not saying he wasn't deserving of the win. I'm just saying that there are always other people in the nominations, and that to even get a Tony nomination means that you're stunning in performance.
And I know that Hamilton is most likely going to win more than 5 awards, but my prediction is that it wins 5.
For me, I feel like the only award Hamilton won't win is Leading Actress, and I think Choreography and set design are up in the air for it. And like for Choreography, it all depends on preference, do the voters like more of story telling movement, or the showstopping kind of style of Shuffle Along, they're so different, and both absolutely amazing in their own ways. I see valid reasons for both to win that category. It'll never happen, but I'd love to see a tie in that category.
Didn't read all of the thread, but I totally agree, King Charles III was the most superbly written play to come around in a long time. It deserves to win over The Humans.
Here are some categories categories Hamilton is nominated that Tony voters could use to spread the wealth to other shows.
Lead Actor in a Musical: Tony voters could use this award to acknowledge Fiddler on the Roof or even School of Rock. Lead Actress in a Musical: It would be one of the biggest shockers in history if Phillipa Soo ends up winning. Featured Actor in a Musical: The three Hamilton guys could split the vote and the award could go to Brandon Victor Dixon or Christopher Fitzgerald. Featured Actress in a Musical: Jane Krakowski could probably earn her fair share of support. Best Choreography: Savion Glover could give Andy Blankenbuehler a run for his money.

Lol same! I think there is tremendous personal appreciation spread across the three, to be sure, but from what I hear, the objective consensus continues to go toward Daveed. Last year, in Featured Actress, there was a clear split between Lucas and Kuhn. I truly don't see as pronounced of a divide in interests with this category. Daveed's got it.
