I think the point was that the Tonys are supposed to celebrate and promote the theater, not political agendas, not diversity, not lgbtq issues or women's rights. The deplorables are not watching the Tonys. But smart, sensitive, and religious people like myself are, and I do care,and I wish there were some way forward, to have a constructive dialogue.

I found most of the evening's performances to be highly enjoyable (more so than previous years' performances). That being said, the ONLY win I agreed with out of the musicals category was My Fair Lady for costumes so that is disappointing. I think it is criminal that Michael Yeargan did not win for his stunning set design for My Fair Lady. Same with Tina Fey losing book.

I’m still certain that Ethan Slater lost because the Tony committee didn’t want to give too much notice to a “commercial” show. He was snubbed.

Ageist, what? Gee, do I feel sorry for those poor teens. Imagine how heartbroken they must be to learn you don't want to talk to them.

Don't remember if anyone commented about this before but they didn't do the brief plot summary moments with actors from each nominated play this year. I would have rather seen that over horribly boring Bruce Springsteen.

It was shocking to wake up this morning and read all the homophobic comments made in this thread. If BWW has ever hit rock bottom, this might be it. I never understand the comments about wanting to keep politics out of award shows. Theater IS political and has been for centuries. Art the entire world over, whether it be painting, sculpture, dance, poetry, theater, symphony- all of these mediums have been used as political tools, both to liberate and oppress. 

If someone thanking their spouse at an award show gets your dander up, then its time you take a hard look at yourself and ask why.

As for the awards themselves, I’m thrilled that Band’s Visit racked up such a total. Lenk’s performance was the highlight of the night for me too. It shows that producers shouldn’t be afraid to showcase a quiter moment. With the close ups of TV the smaller moments often come across better than a chaotic production when the camera doesn’t know how to properly focus the viewer’s attention. The Next to Normal number and Sydney’s Ring of Keys were equally winning for these reasons. Something like Mean Girls, aside from being a weak song, just felt awkward and haphazard. 

I thought Summer also came off as one of the better numbers of the night. It felt fun and probably sold some tickets. They also completely restaged and rearranged the vocal lines to fit the venue and telecast. That’s smart producing. 

My Fair Lady’s medley felt a tad rushed, but all the components came off well. This is probably the first production of Carousel where Blow High, Blow Low is the most celebrated number in the show! The choreography was nice to see, but with the bench scene, June is Bustin’ Out All Over, Mister Snow, the Soliloquy and You’ll Never Walk Alone at your disposal...I mean, get Renee out there. She’s who the target ticket buying demographic want to see.

I thought Josh and Sara were merely ok. They seem like really cool people and I liked that they were making fun of themselves, but they didn’t quite have the oomph I’d like to see from Tony hosts. 

The best part of the night was what usually is the worst part- the speeches. So many eloquently expressed sentiments. Really heartfelt things were said last night and I was moved.

I thought this was the most entertaining award show I've ever seen, and I hate award shows. Josh and Sarah really surprised me.

All of the numbers made me want to see the shows they represented (even Bruuuuce) except Mean Girls, which just felt tired.

yes, this was a crappy season. I have to be hopeful & optimistic that this coming season will be better. Shows I think have potential to be great & do well: The Cher Show, Hadestown, Jagged Little Pill, Ain't Too Proud. But then we also have these potential flops: Head Over Heels, The Prom, King Kong & Pretty Woman. And we currently only have one musical revival - Kiss Me, Kate.

I whole-heartedly agree with almost everything WhizzerMarvin said!

 

 

Art and Life are inextricably intertwined.  What else is art suppose to be about?  Bunnies and daisies?

I was just talking to a few students and we all agreed that the speeches were really lovely this year.  And as much dislike as there is for Ken Davenport - his joy at having OOTI win (at least I think it was him) was undeniably delightful.

I'd take Peter Cottontail over The Band's Visit or Bruce Springsteen any day.

Even people who didn’t like the show, commended Slater’s energetic performance but I don’t recall anyone calling it nuanced because, well, he’s playing a sponge. It’s not that kind of show, which is cool. I saw (and adored) TBV in November and have tickets to see Spongebob in 2 weeks. I hope Slater is in for that performance, but I hear he is out a lot for weekend matinees. Maybe more of the voters went for a subtle, nuanced, intimate performance instead.

Curious to see the box office jump for THE BAND'S VISIT. Winning Best Musical always sees a bump for the winning show, but 10 Tonys will see a huge boost for their box office. The show was doing well before, but not really selling out often.

yeah, the SPONGEBOB/FROZEN/MEAN GIRLS  cheerleaders aren't being kind to THE BAND'S VISIT on social media. Don't understand how people can bash a show they haven't seen. Good thing social media wasn't around in 2004 when Avenue Q won over Wicked.

Happy it wasn't a clean sweep, happy Island, sponge and carousel and even mfl got something. I love Tony s. But I think his award was about him not the performance. Side note Harry hadden was asked in a sloppy red carpet interview what show he's in. Ouch. Much better show than last year
