The old I Love New York campaign. Who is this Sweeney? I don't think it's Cariou or Hearn?

I’m fairly certain that’s George Hearn...makeup is just a little funky

He doesn't look like Hearn to me. Did Hearn even do Sweeney in New York with Lansbury?

Whoever it is it doesn't appear that he knows the words to the song. (And it's only 4 words!)

It is Len - it’s the makeup
And yes - Hearn was his original replacement

Looks like Cariou to me; he has a slimmer build than Hearn, at least he did back then.  Cariou and Lansbury played their final performances on the same day, and Hearn and Loudon replaced them at the next performance, so I think it's more likely that Cariou and Lansbury appear in the commercial together.

Looks like Cariou to me, too.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Not going to start a separate thread for my question---'why is there a car in the Manila production of Sweeney?'

They came in right after Hedwig and just kept the same set.

SweetLips, this review goes into great detail about the post-apocalyptic setting, but here’s a quick little blurb for you:

“Near the end of this classic opener, lead stars Salonga and Jett Pangan make their wickedly cinematic entrance in an old Chevrolet El Camino, like a deranged Bonnie and Clyde, as they take their spots on centerstage in this drastically re-imagined retelling of this decades-old Broadway classic. The hybrid vehicle, part car and part pickup truck, is actually the centerpiece of the set. The front hood doubles as the counter for Mrs. Lovett's pie shop, while the pick-up bed functions as the barber shop.”

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Thank you for that glorious review and explanation.

What a diverse interpretation of that classic tale. It certainly seems to create a mind switch from the moment you enter that theatre from the know to the unknown.

I hope Ms Salonga will sing Mrs Lovett in her soon to be concert tour of Australia.

Maybe it's Walter Charles, the understudy?

I would say I'm fairly certain it is Len Cariou; the make up in the original show was actually quite grotesque, and as can be seen in the national tour commercial with George Hearn, the eye make up design for Sweeney may have been exaggerated to accommodate for the line "his eye was odd".

That commercial was playing in New York in the fall of 1979, when I first moved there.  George Hearn didn't join the show until the following March, when Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury left the show.  It's probably Cariou, although it looks like it might be a stand-in just for the commercial (who obviously had a tough time remembering that tricky Sondheim lyric.... "I love New York"Anyone know who this is as Sweeney opposite Lansbury?.

I am 90% sure it's Cariou, and 100% sure he didn't get the memo about looking directly into the camera.
