Maybe I'm just not smart enough, but even understanding more about the plot I would not see this again.

We geeetttt it. You didn’t liiiikeee ittttt. No need to constantly make negative comments. I hate Book of Mormon and Hamilton. But you don’t see me constantly commenting negative things on threads about those shows.

After they gobbled up my more than $300 for two obstructed view seats, I will make as many negative comments as I want about this piece of garbage. If you don’t like it, scroll on by.

This is a phenomenon I simply do not understand, but I'm afraid you're not going to stop it. I've tried to make the same point in the Bad Cinderella thread, but apparently there are people who derive intense satisfaction from endlessly disparaging shows which they don't like (I call it Michael Riedel Syndrome). Personally, I don't see the point of wasting my time in threads devoted to shows that don't interest me, but it seems a lot of other folks relish this sort of thing. This is not to say that I haven't posted my thoughts on shows I found disappointing (e.g., Sweeney Todd), but I move on after doing so; it seems that many others are incapable of doing the same.

Right. Dislike the show, comment about it, and move on. It’s that simple. No need to continuous replies about how someone hated a show.

IMO yes. I normally do not see shows for performers but I saw Grey House just for Tatiana Maslany. So for me, if I was in this situation, I would exchange.

She is fantastic in the show, so if you're a fan, it would definitely be worth exchanging. As someone who didn't know who she was before I saw the show, I don't think I'd have minded seeing an understudy. I don't think the production relies specifically on her (in the way that the current A Doll's House relies on Jessica Chastain).

Thanks for all the input. I am definitely a fan of her amazing work in Orphan Black, but I was somewhat underwhelmed when I saw her in Network and in Mary Page Marlowe at Second Stage. That being said, she and Laurie Metcalf were the reasons I got tickets for this in the first place, so I exchanged for next week. (And thanks to the box office staff at AMT Theater for exchanging our Walking With Bubbles tickets and allowing us to swap nights with Grey House, since all the slots for this trip are filled.)

I went tonight; no strong opinion either way other than I enjoyed it enough for what I paid. (TDF, Mezz A 14)

Tatiana was out though (bought from TDF so no alert email nor had I opened this thread until tonight to avoid spoilers), and I had been excited to see her weeks ago and since completely forgot she was even in it. So I didn't miss her at the time, but I really wish I'd seen her because she's a stellar actress. Maybe I'll see it again. (And not because I didn't understand it.)

Understudy Claire Karpen reminded me of Mary Louise Parker the entire time - to an almost distracting degree.

It has its moments, yes. I'll try to be vague about the circumstances, but some inherent spoilers below:

The worst is a moment where they use a prosthetic to depict the skin on someone's leg getting peeled upward, and some sort of vein/muscle chord or something getting pulled out of it. It was well-done for a stage effect, but not quite realistic enough to make me squirm (and I can be sensitive to these things).

A character also has a broken leg, on which we see a lot of bruising and some blood on the clothes and head, but not too graphic. The leg then gets beat around to some extent, so the character is in a lot of pain, which can be a bit cringe.

There's also a moment where some blood pours out of an actor's mouth.

We also see a dead bird getting dissected.

There's a scene where we hear a character offstage getting some minor injuries by impact.

A character vomits at one point as well
 

^I guess it sounds like a lot when I type it out like that, but in the moment, it doesn't FEEL like the play is hitting you over the head with a lot of gruesome stuff."

If possible without spoiling any plot points could someone pls tell me how bad the

I found all of the performance except Metcalf’s up to the demands yet not memorable beyond serving good ensemble work. Metcalf has less actual stage time yet arguably makes the strongest impression. It’s that kind of piece. I would not exchange tickets for an out but hers. The play and attendant production accoutrements are the stars here. Whether one admires the ultimate synergy or not.

I saw the play today and have to say I really appreciated it. I found myself unexpectedly tearful and emotional at the end. I’m about to explain some of my interpretations which may imply SPOILERS so stop reading here if you like. 

I feel the play is a meditation on grief and trauma and how we “make a home with it.” The ways in which it can continue to terrorize us as well as the ways we can befriend it, let go of it and grow comfortable with it in ways that both keep us frozen and liberate us. The ways it can keep us in its grip and pull us back in  

I have never seen Orphan Black so I wasn’t missing Tatiana  I thought Ms Karpen was great, She also reminded me of Mary Louise Parker which isn’t a bad thing in my book.

I felt the cast was uniformly excellent with Caruso being the weakest link. She felt like a modern goth girl with very little gravitas to her performance. 
 

I didn’t find it really that scary at all. Certainly not terrifying. It’s marketing seems to use that generic American Horror Story type imagery that evokes horror but it never really delivered on that.

Overall I liked it. Not really anything I’d rave about. Not sure why Kirdahy and Mantello were over the moon about this and why they had to produce it? Maybe the writer is gay.

Nope- the writer is straight. If I remember correctly in an interview one of them said they wanted to produce a horror type play and maybe Grey House was the first one they found. Idk. I’m glad you enjoyed it though. I too found myself emotional at the end but I’m not sure why. Can’t wait to revisit in a few weeks.

I was at today's matinee. I agree with many of the theories referenced above, but for me the two big jump scares

both involved the Ancient One, first when she appeared above Paul Sparks at the refrigerator and then the couch effect with her and Squirrel.

I wish Laurie Metcalf had a bigger role, but it was still great to see her back on stage. Claire Karpen was excellent as the one "normal" person in the show (at least until the end).

While I was lukewarm on the show itself, I was very impressed with the Deaf representation. There were three interpreters who switched off seamlessly throughout the performance and I saw several groups of Deaf patrons huddling before and after the show.

Re stage door, Laurie Metcalf and Millicent Simmonds both came out right after 4. Laurie was very unassuming, obliged a couple photos and autographs and then walked her dog down the street. Millie stayed outside for a while talking/signing with people and was very personable.
