A new production of Beaches the Musical will take the stage at Theatre Calgary, as the final show of its 2023-24 season. Performances run May 18-June 16.
Based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart, Beaches follows the 30-year friendship of Cee Cee and Bertie, from their childhood to adulthood. The story is perhaps best known from its 1988 film adaptation, which starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey.
Beaches the Musical has music by Mike Stoller, lyrics by Dart, and book by Dart and Thom Thomas. Lonny Price will direct, with Matt Cowart codirecting. Full casting will be announced in the coming months. It was originally developed with David Austin as composer.
“Beaches, beaches, beaches beaches beaches,
Beaches, beaches, beaches beaches beaches,
I love you…”
This really held no interest for me until I saw Lonnie Price's name attached. And even still, I don't think it would be tops on my list to see. I could only watch the movie once. I still wish he had been tapped to direct this Sweeney revival. JMO
They should just do the movie on stage. Isn't that what people want?

They were looking for a new composer for a while.
Clearly, that didn't happen.
Saw this back in its incarnation at Drury Lane in Chicago.
I love, love, love the film.
This thing was a mega-stinker. I really hope they've done a lot of work.

Glad you posted this. There is a seat sale right now and was about to buy a ticket to fly from Toronto.

Since David Austin wrote the score for the DC and Chicago run and now the composer is Mike Stoller, Clearly it did happen.

Kelli Barrett (FX TV's Fosse/Verdon, Broadway’s Dr. Zhivago) and Jessica Vosk (Wicked) will lead the International Premiere of Beaches the Musical at Theatre Calgary this spring.
The production will begin previews on May 18th, 2024, celebrate opening night on May 24th, and will run through June 16th in the Arts Commons Max Bell Theatre in Calgary.
The musical previously had a run in 2015 at Chicago's Drury Lane Theatre, starring Shoshana Bean and Whitney Bashor. Since then, the creatives have worked through several readings and workshops including with performers including Vosk, Kara Lindsay, and Elizabeth Teeter among others.
Poor Jessica Vosk can't catch a break.
