Well, blowing up the two-party system is a remote goal; much more likely is the possibility of becoming a big enough factor that one or the other of the major parties makes changes to accommodate some of a minor party's goals.

First of all, LAY THE F*CK OFF JOEY; we get it; we were wrong. So was I, the entire media, every single pollster. Why? Because white people lied. Face it. Their candidate is a liar, a cheat, an admitted sexual predator, a business person that thrives on exploiting employees and contractors; he has no concept of being faithful to a spouse or an employee. "If it's good enough for him it must be good enough for me". The hatred displayed at his rallies saddens and scares me. So, they can go back to their part time jobs at Walmart with no benefits. When their COLA from welfare stays stagnant they can starve. If they think getting or making $8 an hour will allow them to prosper then just deal with it, but they will still bitch about those lazy n!gger$.

     
Look at Pence. He is worse.  Just wait until Trump ruins the country and resigns in year 2 or 3, so Pence can be an incumbent president. We didn't realize the true racism and hatred that permeates and simmers in the minds of the haters, the disenfranchised and easily swayed. This call for change would be understandable if all the incumbent Republicans were defeated but they weren't. McCrory is in a recount in NC, businesses flee. Uneducated whites don't understand (or care) where taxes come go to pay for their schools; they chant the like of "JEWsa" and "If at first you don't succeed, reload". How can we teach our children that bullying is unacceptable when it is proudly celebrated?    

While Latino voters came through on their strength, Women did not, African Americans did not. Where was the anger and conviction shown by Black Lives Matter? Where were all the women that are underpaid, slighted, and ignored? 

Petra and Liza a5, your hubris and trolling is exactly that of a petulant spiteful child. That petulant childlike attitude of revenge and intolerance voted in droves. now you can starve.  Petra, your fascination and enthusiasm for "What dress will she wear?" is disgusting. Do you know what Brexit is? Do you know Republicans have successfully gutted the Voter's Right Act? Do you know who your Representative is and where she/he stands on any issues whatsoever? (Yes, go ahead and look up all the answers to my questions). Yet, like I previously said, idiots want a hot first lady. I don't usually call out individual posts but if the shoe fits...Are your lives really that pathetic that you hide in the darkness of anonymity?

I think I need to take a break from here. I can't and won't go silent and complacent. That's what got us here today; people silently plotting and lying to your face, and then exposing their hatred.

Great job predicting this, PJ! Yeah... An "apocalypse" and "landslide."

I hope you're saying that to everyone who expressed the same opinion because it wasn't even remotely uncommon.  Hence the palpable non-celebratory mood in the media and across the country.  

but over 58 million people were so disgusted with politicians that habitually lie to them and are corrupt that they were willing to take a "flyer" on somebody who was not a politician.

Apparently, it wasn't the habitual lying and corruption that bothered them.  Just the fact that they were politicians.  They were completely content to elect a corrupt habitually lying ELITE (this morning's buzzword) businessman with zero experience in politics.  To me, there is no logical or reasonable excuse.  None.  There is far more evidence that bigotry, homophobia, xenophobia, racism and misogyny were key factors in this outcome.  It is not logical and certainly not reasonable, but it more clearly evidenced from the campaign than the above explanation.  

BTW - my wife and I voted 3rd party for the first time in our lives.

Well, it is certainly your right to do so and pat yourselves on the back for it.

I know of people who did write in candidates for president.  That's even more dangerous than a 3rd party candidate because it just goes into the other category.  Like writing in your dog's name doesn't automatically put them on the ballot or list of candidates.  People don't seem to get that. I was told it was a protest vote, but it doesn't mean anything when nobody can see who you voted for.

I have loved Hillary since she was First Lady....She is a class act and I am so proud of her coming back and running again....I am very sad today but not surprised

Years ago when Gore lost I thought I would never recover.....that broke my heart.

She would of been a wonderful President. I am grateful for all the people who voted for her, but it just wasn't enough.......She will  win the popular vote just like Gore did

Yep, Hillary acquitted herself well.  Just couldn't make it over the wall.  She wasn't able to hold onto the Obama coalition.  CNN provides what I consider an accurate postmortem below.

I reject CNN's postmortem.  This wasn't about minorities not showing up in sufficient numbers.  Perhaps this was inevitable, given Trump's ability to manage the media, using them for free publicity while railing against them at the same time.  Based on what I've seen, this was lost by the higher-than-expected turnout in rural voting, coupled with a much larger margin of victory for Trump there.  In hindsight, the Dems need to take their message beyond the urban areas.  Don't write off evangelicals, engage them.  No one ever thought the Pat Buchanan strategy would work with modern demographics, but is has.

This is certainly anecdotal, but I know of several much younger African Americans throughout NC and SC who sat this one out for a couple of reasons.  First, they feel that their lot in life has not improved one jot under Obama.  And next, many were early Bernie Sanders' supporters voting for the first time who could not bring themselves to throw their support behind Hillary.  Their rationale was that she was the woman who tried to take out Obama eight years ago.  Yes, they're young and still somewhat politically naive but we've all been there.  Several of them are even family members who openly joke that my generation is stuck in the 60 & 70's.

I would never dismiss any suggestion that disaffected rural voters propelled Trump to victory.  But, younger Democrats and Indies of all stripes have learned an important lesson here that you pointed out earlier...elections have consequences.  My take on it is that there is no utopia so don't get distracted by someone trying to sell you a slice of it.

Finally, good luck engaging the evangelicals down south.  They will go to their graves opposed to abortion, further gun control, eliminating farm subsidies, and same-sex anything.

As per that CNN article that javero linked it reads like they are using African Americans, Latinos and the younger voters as scapegoats for the election loss.

Good point but I still think some of that vote was disgust at politicians in general.

So, "when they go low, we go high" clearly didn't work.  It's time for Democrats to climb right down into the trenches with the Republicans and get just as nasty as them. For the next 4 years, they need to be nothing but obstructionists.  Their goal, to paraphrase Mitch McConnell, needs to be to "ensure that Herr Trump is a one-term President." 

The entire Democratic leadership needs to go.  It's time for a new approach. It's time to be just as mean and nasty as they are.

I don't know, but if the comparisons of Trump with the Nazis have any merit at all - read the very next post (after your response to me) for an example of such a comparison - then can our reaction really be along the lines of "oh well, we'll have to resign ourselves to a maniac being in charge of a huge nuclear arsenal"?

But I don't have an answer to your question, so if you want to just call this venting, I won't blame you.

I'm aware that minorities were not the problem. I was just noting that the CNN article is eluding to that. The vote for Trump by white women is actually very, very disturbing in light of his behavior and attitude towards women.

A colleague of mine feels that the reason Trump won the election was because in his opinion the "privileged white male" would not stand for a female President...at any cost.

But then how do you explain that Clinton won the popular vote by about 196,776 votes?

If the election were solely based on the number of people that literally went out and voted...and just that, Clinton would have taken the presidency. She was clearly the popular candidate.

It was the electoral college tally that did her in and that is so, so disheartening.
