The comedy writing nominations thoroughly confuse me. "Parks" is able to score two for writing but doesn't make it into the Outstanding Comedy list? "Community" is recognized here over the many other nominated shows? And the sloppily written but fun "Girls" over the sharp and brainy "Veep" for writing?
There seems to be a disconnect between those two categories- writing vs. Outstanding Comedy. It's really frustrating and seems unjustified.
How can a comedy series feature two of the best written episodes of the year but somehow not be deemed worthy of an overall nomination?
Loving all the "Veep" love, however. Julia Louis Dreyfuss should easily win the prize.
Even though Louie not being in Comedy Series is absurd, Louis CK now owns the record for individual nominations in a single year. Beat David Lynch's record for Twin Peaks.
I actually thought the way Veep showed politics may have left some people cold and thought it would get writing than series. That said, I also was disappointed by Parks & Rec's season by the way it showed local politics and elections. If not for Kathryn Hahn, I would have been really bored the rest of the way. A bit too twee and naive but I guess I like the profanity-laced cynicism of Ianucci more.
And what do the writers of Breaking Bad have to do for their writing to be noticed? I thought their fourth season surpassed Mad Men's fifth season.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many actors from Downton Abbey recognized. And a little disappointed to see Kelly Macdonald and Michael Shannon left off the list; I think their work on Boardwalk Empire is always fantastic.
Parks and Rec's continue snubbing is ridiculous. Do these people actually watch television, or just put down whatever was being buzzed about last?
I'm surprised at all the Downton Abbey nominations. Frankly, Season 2 was pretty bad. Though I don't begrudge Hugh Bonneville or Joanne Froggatt their nominations. But I would have nominated Siobhan Finneran, whose character showed a more complex side than just being plain evil, instead of the overrated Maggie Smith, who was excellent in Season 1, but was overdone this time around.
So happy for Dot-Marie Jones! Hope she finally wins.
I noticed Michael J. Fox has 2 nominations in Guest Actor, one in Comedy and one in Drama. Was he really that good or is it pity nominations?
I'm perfectly happy Michelle Dockery and Joanne Froggatt got noms. But I agree with your assessment of Season two. Practically purple with all the goings-on. But that Xmas episode nearly redeemed everything that came before.
I'm surprised of no Scandal love. Kerry did look gorgeous this morning though.
Same shows, different year. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING.

"Community" is recognized here over the many other nominated shows?
Community is the best written comedy on TV (it's not always the funniest show, but it is written impeccably). It deserves more than it's one lone writing nomination. The episode that was nominated is one of the smartest pieces of television writing I've ever seen (up there with the episode of Futurama where they actually created their own mathematical formula as part of the episode). The performers on the show are constantly ignored despite their great work. Donald Glover has comedic timing that is rare today.
The fact that this is the only the shows second nomination is unacceptable (it's other nom was last year for the Animation for the stop motion christmas episode). It has had at least 1 episode every season that deserved writing nominations (Paintball season 1, paintball season 2, Epidemiology the Halloween episode from season 2, the Conspiracy Theory episode from season 2, the christmas episode from season 2, the dungeons and dragons episode from season 2, Remedial Chaos Theory the episode nominated this year)
It's a brilliant show, full of talented people that gets shafted every year because it's "weird."
Though, obviously it's pointless to get upset about since the Academy clearly wouldn't know quality if it spit in their collective face after stabbing them in the gut. Any group that sees fit to nominate Jon Cryer Phoning it in on a Weekly Basis for a Half-Hour on a Show that Stopped Being Relevant Long Before It's Biggest Named Star had a Major Meltdown and Was Canned couldn't see comedy with binoculars in a white room where everything was labeled.

See, the Veep nominations surprise me, because that's a show that I just don't get.
And I think it's disingenuous for American Horror Story have submitted itself as a miniseries, but trying to understand the motivations of Murphy and Co just makes me head hurt.
I agree that Community deserved more than just one nomination.
I just noticed Betty White for Best Reality Show Host?!

After that weird campaign that got her on SNL, I think Betty White will be rewarded for everything she does until she's no longer with us.

I think it's pretty obvious that Emmy voters pick who they "like." That guy from that geek sitcom wins every year- he must be a great guy because you could pick an actor off the street at random to play that part. Alec Bladwin is a very popular fellow and acquits himself well but certainly isn't setting the world on fire on 30 Rock. And if all the Emmy voters that picked 30 Rock for best comedy year after year actually watched it it wouldn't be 147th in the ratings.
How can they still nominated CURB YOUR ENTHUTHIASM over COMMUNITY and HAPPY ENDINGS? Sad to see the lack of love for REVENGE and ONCE UPON A TIME, but I'm delighted to see the well-deserved love for Kathryn Joosten and Jared Harris. Also, BIG BANG THEORY is cute, but not this award-worthy. I'm proud of VEEP - love that show! Not surprised by the GLEE shut-out. My biggest WTF nods, even they're leaving: Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. This season was just not good - I'd rather see them get special Emmys since SNL and MODERN FAMILY own the supporting categories. Also, the nomination for FOOD REVOLUTION is ridiculous.
In the guest comedy category, Margaret Cho over the surprisingly hilarious Nene Leakes?
Also, explain the love/appeal for NURSE JACKIE?

Bill Hader deserves a nom for Stefon alone.
Revenge never stood a chance, it's too sudsy. It's wonderful and fun and a great way to spend an hour every week but it was never going to be taken seriously, same with Once, it's viewed as too childish inspite of the wider appeal it actual has.
Definitely happy about Veep, the (vastly) better of the two new HBO comedies that premiered this year.
Is this the first time that no broadcast drama has been nominated for Best Drama Series? Not even The Good Wife slipped in this year.

I am glad to see that Maya Rudolph and Jimmy Fallon got nominations for Best Guest Acting. They were terrific on the SNL episodes that they hosted.
I think it's actually time to start new categories for Best Network Comedy/Best Cable Comedy, Best Network Drama/Best Cable Drama, etc.
There are just way too many channels with original programing now unlike when these awards were originated and there were 4 stations.
Oh, and what about The Killing and Mireille Enos?!?!
I now cross my arms and frown petulantly.
I know the Golden Globes don't usually match up with the Emmys, but I'm a bit surprised that 3/4 of the winners in the lead categories aren't even nominated. Laura Dern and Matt LeBlanc both won for Best Actress/Actor in a Comedy and yet are missing from the Emmys. The one that really shocks me is Kelsey Grammer. He was outstanding in Boss and yet somehow didn't even get a nod.
Some other things I thought were odd:
- There being seven people up for Best Actress in a Comedy, as opposed to the usual six. Apparently there was a tie between two of the candidates, which is odd considering how many people there are voting.
- The show 'Missing' somehow being considered a miniseries. I know a lot of people are complaining that American Horror Story is in the same category, but at least that's an anthology.
I feel like I'm the only 20-something on the face of the planet who finds 'Community' painfully unfunny. I mean, I know that smug self satisfaction can be fun, but that can't last.
Surprised by the GIRLS hate. The pilot was pretty shaky, but I thought the show developed really well. Nice to see it recognized.
Sad (though hardly surprised) to see no love for THE KILLING. Not even for both of the remarkable lead actors.
The concentration of well written, produced, directed, acted television these days is overwhelming. I don't understand how anyone can keep up.
Seriously, Nick Offerman has created one of the best characters on television. His snub is absurd.
The Sherlock nominations are fantastic, though.

House hasn't deserved recognition in about 3 years, but it's still a bit of a bummer that Hugh Laurie will now never win an award for that role. He really should have gotten at least one during all those years when David Spader kept picking them up for Boston Legal. Oh well.
Honestly, I'm kind of shocked that Community even got the writing nomination - yes, "Remedial Chaos Theory" was virtuoso comedy, but that level of quality has never stopped the Emmys from completely ignoring the show's existence before. (The animation award they got last year was juried - no nomination process.)
The best way to get nominated for an Emmy is to already have been nominated for an Emmy. The stupid choices we see this year will be the same stupid choices we see next year.

I'm a little surprised we don't see Lena Headey for best supporting actress, i thought she was going to be in there for certain. Little miffed we don't see Megan Hilty there too, after all the love she's been getting recently i thought she could slip in there. But no instead we get the classic death nom for Kathryn Joosten (eye roll).
Thrilled about Breaking Bad noms...especially Giancarlo Esposito and Aaron Paul they were excellent this year...very upset about Parks and Rec snubs
