The literary community has lost an original voice.
Very sad news, indeed.
"Yes, the brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, men recognize that the human race has been harshly treated but it has moved forward." - Les Miserables
I'm so sad. He lived in my neighborhood and would always sit in the park where I walk Miss Holly. He knew her by name and would let her sniff his fingers and then rub her head. I always called him "Mr. Vonnegut." I was hoping to see him again when the weather got nice.
"God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater"
Heartbreaking.
A true original.

He was an alchemic linguist, able to weave gold out of ordinary words.
What awful news. RIP.
He was supposed to come home to Indiana for the culmination of a yearlong community wide celebration of his work and give a speech. He will be missed.
OMG . . . I love Kurt Vonnegut and his books. Slaughterhouse Five is my second favorite book of all time. **Cries** He will be terribly missed!
this is so sad
my cousin and i were just talking about him on sunday...
Oh my God. Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most original, creative literary forces in America. RIP.
I have always been a tremendous fan of his work, it was brilliant, insightful, and damn funny.
One of my few regrets in life is that I won't have the opportunity to sit and listen to the man rant.
If you haven't go read
Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, Sirens of Titan and Slaughterhouse 5 tonight. Forget that, go read them all.
This man was a literary genius, and he will definitely be missed. Breakfast of Champions is one of my all-time favourite books.

Ugh.
Just got into the most pointless arguement.
ME: As a creative writing major, you should know that Kurt Vonnegut died today...
WOMAN: Oh f***ing well. Do you know how many people die every day?
ME: (Stunned) And how many of those people wrote SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE?
WOMAN: And how does THAT make him a better person?
MAN #1: Well, Kurt Vonnegut WAS possibly one of the greatest satirists of all time...
WOMAN: Who cares?

One of my favorites. May have to dig something out and re read it in tribute.
When I told my brother he said "Oh, he was in the movie 'Back to School' with Rodney Dangerfield."
It was actually a bit funny. Ah well though, Mr. Vonnegut will be sorely missed!
Very sad news indeed. Rest in Peace.
Cruel, I know a few people like that. They don't value anything or anyone, so they go through their pointless lives completely miserable.
Nothing has any value, unless you value it.
What a sad, pathetic little woman.
So rare the writer who can make me laugh and think at the same time. Slaughterhouse Five was one of the most original and thought-provoking novels ever. Thanks, Mr. Vonnegut, for everything.

Let us not forget that Kurt Vonnegut wrote a play, "Happy Birthday, Wanda June" that was produced in 1970-71 and ran a season with Kevin McCarthy, William Hickey and Marsha Mason.
If you want to pay a real tribute to him, see if you can cobble together some monologues from the script. The lead character is based on Hemingway.
Wanda June is almost a peripheral character. She is a 10 year old currently residing in heaven because she was hit by an ice cream truck on her birthday. Her not-picked-up birthday cake was the only one at the bakery.
By the way everyone in heaven, including Jesus Christ, plays shuffleboard.
I despised his books, but am very sorry to hear of his death.
one of the most brilliant writers of our time. Few could match his originality....This is truly a loss to the world.
