Movies that turned out to be better than I thought they would be when I first heard about them:
Clueless
My Sister Eileen (we were just discussing it on another thread recently)
Blacula (no sh*t, the movie is GOOD, well-acted and scary!)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Charlie's Angels
The Brady Bunch Movie
Signs (I had heard it was terrible, and was surprised that it was far from terrible)
Unbreakable (M. Night has been getting a bad rap, IMO. I've shied away from his films, and have always liked them better than the mass-responses to them.)
...These are the ones that came to mind immediately, anyway.
b12b, Signs is such a great movie! My favorite M. Night film.
Crash.
I had not preconceived notions about it being good. And after watching it I thought it was very powerful.
Subtle - no. But it made me think and discuss and contemplate. I did not expect that the film would trigger such a reaction.

One movie I wasn't sure about going into was Finding Neverland; however, I really enjoyed it. Another movie that suprised me was Inside Man.
Like a lot of people, Mean Girls exceeded expectations for me.
peggyandvelma -- great choice - LOVE Casablanca. I have such a weird thing with Bogart though. Anyone remember a Tales from the Crypt episode where they tried to "Forest Gump" Bogart into the story? The whole thing was shot from the first person perspective, and whenever the character looked in anything reflective, you saw Bogart clipped in from one of his movies. I can't watch any movie with him any more without thinking of that - and how mechanical it looked in the episode.
Still, Casablanca IS a great movie.
imaginary heroes.
never heard of it and when i did i though it would stupid.
Now its one of my favorite and one of the movies that makes me cry everytime!

THE LADYKILLERS remake was hilarious. I almost didn't see it after everyone told me how awful it supposedly was.
I agree about Mean Girls and Finding Neverland!
Two Weeks Notice
The Incredibles
Look Who's Talking (and the sequels)
Lady in the Water (bad, but not HORRIBLE like everyone said)
Also, RV wasn't good, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Secretary. I knew that Gyllenhaal and Spader received great reviews, but I wasn't sure how I'd respond to the storyline/subject matter. I wound up loving it! It was excellent. I loved the performances and it was actually very touching and funny--which I totally didn't expect it to be.

"Euro Trip". I caught it on cable and it was very funny. I've seen it many times and it always makes me laugh.
"The Brady Bunch" films. I was dragged to the first one and I ended up liking it a lot.
"Showgirls". Another laugh riot but it was intended as a drama.

A Love Song For Bobby Long
The Cradle Will Rock
sisterhood of the traveling pants
i grudgingly took my little sister, but got so into it that i was the one crying!
The 40 Year Old Virgin. I was expecting another run-of-the-mill dumbass sex comedy, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was both really funny and even touching.
The Ringer!
For me it was FREAKY FRIDAY (2003). My friend literally pulled me into the theater because I was being as stubborn as a mule about not wanting to see it. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Lindsay Lohan did a great job and Jamie Lee Curtis was a riot! I especially loved their interactions. I ended up watching it again (several times) when it came to DVD.
I second 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN! Especially the very end made it hilarious...

Most recently, I was pleasantly surprised by TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE LEGEND OF RICKY BOBBY. It was much much much much funnier than the awful trailer indicated.
I totally agree with Talladega Nights. i thought it was going to suck but actually it was mildly amusing. I loved John C. Reily and the Cougar (way random though.)
Last night I saw step up and if you're a fan of dancing it's a good one to see. I just thought it was going to be a knock-off of Save the Last Dance.

Mine was 40-year old Virgin. Went so see it cause my freinds dragged me along, but I laughed so hard. Absolutely hilarious!
Don't shoot me.
The Lake House
I loved Finding Neverland... but I didn't think it was going to be bad. The ending makes me cry
I'm gonna add When a Stranger Calls, the new one. I actually jumped in a few places.

Lady In The Water was deff better than i thought it would be (although it wasnt that great)
That Thing You Do (i was in another room when someone was watching it and i couldnt get past the fact that i heard that song over and over). But when i watched it, i actually didnt think the movie was that bad. The song still got on my nerves tho. ha ha
