This is so sad. Not sure if poor career choices are to blame or if she needs new representation ASAP.
I adore her work and wish her all the best.

Hard to put into context without knowing her rent, though. Is she in some extravagant huge space with park views, or a modest brownstone?
I do adore her, as well, though, and glad to hear she has a new show coming up.
I can share this: I was practically her neighbor; saw her all the time. I left Manhattan in 2004. It happens. Took me 5 years to get over it (though I remain in a 20 mile radius). I'm not an actor, but I can imagine her plight. To quote "Manhattan," made in the late 70s, "...This is a tough city to live in without a big income..."
She shoulda married Sam Cohn. She woulda gotten ALL his ICM money when he died.

Lena Dunham just bought a 4 bedroom place in Brooklyn for 4.8 million. Are you telling me that Dianne Wiest can't pull together 4.8 million? Between Woody Allen, Actors Equity Credit Union and some future work she could easily get, she can't pull together enough in loans to buy something decent?

The piece took an odd turn when she said she isn't going to write her own material.
Is she looking for a roommate? If so, my lease is up next month and I could help her out. I hope she likes dogs, though.

I'd watch that web series. Just don't expect her to help write it.
Remember when she sold Mary Kay door to door in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS? She could always do that.

Kickstarter, maybe?
All she should have done was take one of those "nice mom" roles she was offered, on a sitcom or TV drama for a few years, and she never would have had to worry about money again.
I'll bet she said "no" to those golden (yet trivial to her) opportunities one too many times.
Interesting, how many discussions evolve here about actors abandoning the NY stage for LA, and how real, invested actors stay and stick it out in service of the theoretically loftier, more soul-sustaining stage experiences. Then, we hear about an actress who supposedly didn't take a sufficient number of profitable TV roles, and she's almost indicted for her short-sighted commitment to her art. Whatever. Unless you've lived in NYC, you don't know its unique financial challenges. Oscars and other awards seldom equal financial security. Shall we make a list on that score? And the idea that the 20 something Dunham's money should translate into 66 year-old Weist's opportunities is a bizarre and demographic-driven-marketplace-denying fantasy.
You can choose to suffer and sacrifice for your art if you want to. But Weist has had golden opportunities (two of them are on her mantle). She could have taken one "for the money" role and not be talking about moving out of her apartment now.
I understand why she stayed true to her artistic integrity throughout her career, but she is paying a price for those decisions now. I wish her well.
This is based on her comments made in the article. I don't know her choices or her financial situation, or how much her rent is ... only what she said about steering clear of certain roles and the fact that she can't pay her rent now.

What I can't understand is that Dianne has had some high profile movies but I guess she never got the money because she was never the lead. Lay aside the Woody Allen material because I bet she didn't get paid what she was worth for those.
She still was in high profile projects like Independence Day, Footloose, The Lost Boys, Bright Lights Big City, Parenthood, Edward Scissorhoods, Little Man Tate, The Bird Cage, The Horse Whisperer, I Am Sam. I guess her two Oscar wins didn't translate into commanding a higher salary for these roles.
I wonder if her agent just wasn't getting her the money she deserved or if her money was mismanaged. Maybe a victim of Bernie Madoff?

Maybe they could get her a part in Real Nude Celebrity Boot Camp Cook-off?
Lisa Whelchel almost won a million dollars on SURVIVOR. Maybe that's an option?
She had a steady gig on Law and Order for 2 seasons replacing Steven Hill as the D.A. Not sure why she left it or maybe was asked to leave cause quite frankly on that show she had all the charisma of a doorknob. Still 2 seasons on at that time, a top 20 show as a major supporting character. She should have been able to make some serious bank. Save your money kids.
This story is everywhere now. I feel kinda bad for Wiest. I doubt she thought one comment in one article was going to get this much coverage.

"She had a steady gig on Law and Order for 2 seasons replacing Steven Hill as the D.A."
She also had a steady gig on In Treatment and left after the second season. Granted, that show was HBO and the structure of the show meant she was on reduced episodes, so while she got some money, I'm sure it wasn't as much as she could get on L&O.

I agree that Lena Dunham should be helping her.
Katy Perry donated $5000 to help fund TLC's new album. She could help out here a little, too.

Lena should give Dianne the name of a good estate agent.
Her rent is apparently $5300 per month. She may have to move to... heaven forbid... New Jersey. Or if she really wants more work in TV and movies, wonder if she ever considered moving to L.A.

Or room with another actress like Shelley Winters and Marian Seldes did.
Woody Allen has a net worth of 70 Million. He should quietly buy her an apartment. His movies are made on a shoestring with his casts paid a pittance. She made a significant contribution to a couple of his biggest successes.
C'mon Woody. Do the right thing.
