She didn't say he should or shouldn't be held responsible. I understand that and get that she was trying to get the charges correct and I respect that. My issue was with the fact that she said it wasn't, "RAPE, rape." It was just mini-rape. Half a rape, maybe. Her verbiage is correct, but saying it wasn't RAPE rape, makes it sound like she thinks it's lesser somehow. The term for his charge is statutory rape. Call it anything you want. It's still rape.

jg2, then wtf was the whole "well, you know not everyone sees 13 and 14 year old girls the way we do"? really, whoopi? so you think that awful puritanical america is to blame for the dastardly criminalization of raping children? and she does say that she understood why he ran. she defends that.

I keep thinking of all the War Crime tribunals where they try to argue that the individual perpertrating the crime is just as much a victim. That they lived in fear of the reprisals for their actions. That "they were just obeying orders". That they are contributing members of society. That they are older and wiser now and have never repeated their actions so they are rehabilitiated and would never offend again( part of the argument for incareration) so punishing them NOW for the actions of their younger selves is cruel and vengful in the extreme.
I have never bought into those arguements and never will-not for Nazi's, not for Rwanda war lords and certainly not for
aging debauches whatever their cinematic abilities.
did the crime now do the time.

You know, a lot of people I know were willing to let the Pope off because he was forced to be a Hitler Youth.

But I digress. Speaking of digressions, this thread could use a visit from Grape Ape.

Did the Hitler Youth give him Quaaludes and Champagne and go in the rear door with him?

sabrelady, thanks for posting the link to the NY Times.
I was so glad to read this editorial this morning.

Especially the conclusion:

In Europe, the prevailing mood — at least among those with access to the news media — seemed to be that Mr. Polanski has already “atoned for the sins of his young years,” as Jacek Bromski, the chief of the Polish Filmmakers Association, put it.

We disagree strongly, and we were glad to see other prominent Europeans beginning to point out that this case has nothing to do with Mr. Polanski’s work or his age. It is about an adult preying on a child. Mr. Polanski pleaded guilty to that crime and must account for it.

my opinion

My issue was with the fact that she said it wasn't, "RAPE, rape." It was just mini-rape. Half a rape, maybe

Well, raping an underage girl doesn't require as much effort as raping an adult muscle-builder. Now if a man wants to rape an Amazon, that requires a lot of force, a much bigger crime than raping a semi-compliant child who is told to mind adults and is impressed with the adult's social stature. That's the difference between RAPE-rape and the lesser crime of mini-rape.

Polanski should be allowed to atone for the sins of his "youth" (i.e. age 43) in the private of his Swiss chalet. If only all criminals could afford such luxury.

I cannot help but be a bit facetious when trying to understand the "logic" of the Polanski supporters.

What is this world coming to? I'm on a thread where I actually agree with papalovesmambo! Yikes!

"We are all great film directors and artisis. We DEMAND Polanski's release!"

Here here.

I don't know, but I did watch the "rape-rape" clip and I agree that what she said was insane.
