Honestly, his really kind of condescending and rude speech at the Globes, where he thanked no one probably did more to hurt him than Norbit.

I've never understood why people do this. One, it is rude. Two, you should at least act like you are proud of your colleagues. Three, for pure selfish reasons, it definitely hurts any chances you might have in the future.

Didn't Kevin Kline leave the Tonys in a huff when he lost a few years ago? I know that Schwartz apparently stormed out after he lost for Wicked.

Are they children??

The person that comes to mind is the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot bitching over how her show deserved to win top honors over there in England. She should get over herself and her horrible show.

Well, first off, I don't think he should have won.

But even with that aside, you don't see most people storming off when they don't win but should have. Ian McKellan didn't strom out when he lost to Roberto Benigni. Annette Bening didn't storm out when she lost to Hilary Swank.

They have class. Storming out just because you didn't win is, to me, so incredibly juvenile and classless.

Arkin should have and did win. They got that right at least. Murphy was good but Arkin is a master at his craft. And yes Priest...Schwartz is a child. A child with a bad haircut who can't write decent music.

I don't think he even has any right to be miffed/angry. Dissapointed? Sure. But if he gets angry and storms out then it proves exactly why Murphy acts. If an Oscar validated someone as a good actor than Peter O'Toole, Johnny Depp and Robert Downey JR (to name a few) would have a closet full and Russel Crowe and Jamie Foxx would have jobs at a Jiffy Lube.

Part of the problem is the press building it up so he cannot lose. When he does, it comes as a major shock

I like the old days when it was always a horserace going in & anyone could have won.

Agreed Roxy. Ever since it opened all we heard was "OSCAR OSCAR OSCAR" after a while it must have convinced even him, although I'm not too sure he needed too much convincing.

Imagine Randy Newman. Take Kreiger as he had 3 nods in a 5 horse field. His competition was Newman (a perennial loser) & a song from a documentary.

Now here is a person who has a reason to be bitter. Having said that, Murphy's was the best performance in that category

I don't think anyone ever has any right to be miffed or angry over losing an Oscar to someone else. The thing is, as cliche as it sounds, it really is an honor to be nominated. If to be one of a tiny, tiny handful of working actors who are recognized in this way isn't enough to keep your ego satisfied, than you've got bigger problems than your empty trophy case.

And no matter how much the press and anyone else builds up someone's Oscar chances and heaps on the praise, it's no one's fault but Eddie Murphy's if he buys into his own hype and gets disappointed. The fact that he threw a temper tantrum is completely on his ungrateful head.

Eh well I already know our takes on Little Miss differ Mr. Rox so I won't call you a stupid doo doo head. While I think Murphy was good, putting Arkin in the catagory with him did it in for me. I think Arkin was the one who deserved the award and if we're talking places, Murphy was second. And yes I loved every second he was onscreen in Dreamgirls.

Miffed, maybe the wrong word. But with all the buildup, all of the pundits...yeah he should have been miffed. But Arkin gave a nice speech, although his performance wasn't a good as Murphy's.

I am not going to debate if he should or shouldn't win. But honestly, is anyone surprised that he showed no class and good behavior in his defeat ? From what we all have read over the years about him and his behavior, is there anyone who considers him as a good natured, polite and classy person ???

That makes no sense to me. Why "should" he have been miffed? Because he thought he was better than everyone else? Because he believed his own hype?

But, whatever, being "miffed" is one thing. Actually getting up and leaving like a little baby is another thing altogether.

It is obnoxious and I don't know why but it bothers me so much. It is so rude.

I doubt Norbit hurt him at all. Eddie Murphy isn't wonderfully liked in Hollywood to begin with. I think alot of the stories about him not wanting to be in Dreamgirls cause they weren't going to pay him enough hurt him. I found them off setting and even more so proving the point that Eddie is only in the arts for Money. I guarentee he hates Norbit but he knows it will have an audience or it was a big pay day. Hell he made a joke when he hosted SNL once that he did a movie he knew sucked cause they threw an assload of cash at him. Thats wht hurt him. Plus Alan Arkin is more of a favorite of the industry most likely. And in most cases there is one swerve like that, where everyone thinks one thing and the vote goes another way. Hence Scorsese not winning for Aviator (even though he shouldn't have anyways).

Honestly Jamie Foxx did nothing to make me think better of him when he said he had no interest in doing Dreamgirls due to the money being offered until he heard Murphy was in it. God forbid you take a cut in your salary that could feed a third world nation you overrated HACK.

So I think it might have been the money issue and his reputation that hurt Murphy's chances.

Even though I am not the biggest Beyonce fan (Although I like good deal of her songs), I respect her because she FOUGHT for this part, even if that meant taking a pay cut. She wanted to prove herself in the acting business and thought this is the vehicle that would do it for her.

She really wanted to play the role.
She worked hard and like you said took a pay cut.

even worse than a lousy haircut. it's a toupe... and I agree the man is a child and did not deserve to win for Wicked. the award is, after all, for music and lyrics...
