I just thought of a GREAT series finale...the end of Jim Henson's DINOSAURS!
It ended with the entire cast dying as the Ice Age approached. It was an extremely bleak way to end such a light comedy.
The first time i had a lump in my throat when a programme finished was 'Hang Time' but then again i was only about 11-12 years old. The finale that really sticks in my head is Friends, i grew up watching the 6 friends...I actually think i cried at the end.
I loved Quantum Leap's finale.Quantum Leap was one of those quilty pleasure shows. I always thought Scott Backula as the poor man's Harrison Ford.
For me it was Howdy Doody...I've never gotten over it.
That's where Clarabelle spoke for the first time!
I was just about to start this thread....but then i did a search! The ones that standout most for me are as follows:
Friends: The episode itself is definately not that great...i mean, Chandler is more happy about the baby birds then his kids....but the last pan of the apartment definately got to me, espically since they left the picture frame.
Boy Meets World: It ended the way it had to end, the last scene/moment in the classroom was (for lack of a better word) beautiful.
Dead Like Me: It's unfortunate this show only lasted the two seasons...if i recall, it was one of those cases where the show was cancelled without warning so they didn't know it would end with season two. Wether you take that into consideration or not, the last episode was really fitting- it had a sense of finality to it and left with great implications about the character's futures.
3rd Rock From The Sun: Dick & Mary's last scene together was pretty memorable, same with the final song.
Mash, Cheers, Carol Burnett, The Golden Girls but most of all Mary Tyler Moore.
Edit: How could I forget the cancellation of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman? I was devastated.

M*A*S*H
Carol Burnett
Johnny Carson
Mary Tyler Moore
All in the Family
...and of course The New Mickey Mouse Club (1977)
For my money, the worst series finale I've ever watched, hands down, is Will and Grace. Awful beyond description.
I was personally upset when NYPD Blues ended and when Crossing Jordan ended. They were my favorites. Ally McBeal too, that one got to me too.

Melrose Place was an end to an era for me
The end of Arrested Development was sad.

By the time M*A*S*H had its last episode, I had LONG since stopped watching it. I only occasionally watched it after Larry Linville left and was replaced by David Ogden Stiers, and once Gary Burghoff's Radar left the show, I thought it went straight into the toilet and completely ceased to by even slightly funny.
My favorite finales:
Mary Tyler Moore
Newhart
St. Elsewhere
Carson
wow....I almost forgot about Quantum Leap -- I had been so angry with Sam for his outright betrayal of Al when he had the chance to tell his wife that he was a POW and not dead.. especially since it was *his* own rule-breaking that caused Al's capture in a previous episode -- he wound up saving his brothers life instead of preventing the POW's transport.
I was so relieved when Sam righted his own wrong. I can admit that a few tears were shed.
I loved the finale of Six Feet Under. Still miss the show.
I also liked the final Seinfeld.
Oh and another good one was Angel. I felt given how things got messed up by the network pulling the plug without warning that Joss did a really good job of ending the show -- and particularly the last shot of them, weapons drawn charging into some unseen battle, was just perfect.
yeah given that the WB screwed Joss over the angel finale was pretty much perfection.

My Favorite Finales:
Golden Girls
Roseanne
Six Feet Under
I was very young when M*A*S*H ended. I remember the general leaving his horse behind as the fire rolled in and that just crushed me. Didn't a woman smother a baby, too?
I loved the series finale of ER. You remember when Carol took off to Seattle and Doug Ross was standing on the dock? I mean, that was the end, wasn't it?
The worst series finale in the history of television had to be Will & Grace. That was just horrid.
I am upset Friends is over. I bought the complete collection but I still miss watching it on those Thursday Nights!

Was going to start a similar thread, but I knew that there had been one at some point. I just finished catching up on my DVR and it recorded a rerun of the Will&Grace finale. I HATED it when it first aired, but watching it this time... it's really not that bad. The biggest complaints would be that they couldn't make up their minds between a regular episode or a big, important send off, and also I just didn't want to be thinking of Will&Grace apart for so long because of something so stupid. The ending was just too sappy, but I LOVE Jack and Karen singing "Unforgettable". Tiny tear.
Back to finales in general, Friends was a bit of a let down, Seinfeld was genius, and Rosanne was just confusing...
For my money, the finale of Newhart was the best ever.
Melrose Place grrr i miss that show (just re watching it all now, its so trashy)
90210 was a sad one as was X Files, Bad Girls (here in the UK), Las Vegas (we want an ending)

I think Newhart and St. Elsewhere were two of the best.
