I guess "self-defense" against some concrete and fists with a firearm is okay in Florida, wonderfulwizard.
If I see a dog inside a fence, I open that fence and go into the yard, and the dog bites me. Is that the dog's fault?
A grown man stalking a teen with a gun in his possession holds all of the cards.
George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin.
The law and the lawyers were not able to convict him of the crime he committed.
(Florida needs some new legal leaders!)
This is indeed a sad occasion, but they were sworn to follow the laws of the justice system of the US.
I hope this dude gets ostracized for the rest of his life, publicly and often.

No, it is not, according to Judge Milan.
So will the family be able to sue Zimmerman as a civil case, similar to what was done with OJ Simpson? OJ was found liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman even though he was acquitted in his criminal case.
Trayvon Martin's civil rights -- his HUMAN rights -- were violated.

adgal, these prosecutors are very good... they just had a few missteps and, quite frankly, were put at a disadvantage from the start because of those detectives who first investigated the shooting. They kind of just threw it away and treated it as another "justified" shooting against a young, black male (why are they always perceived as criminals?). They never challenged Zimmerman during the police interviews and they mishandled some of the evidence. This was a difficult case for the state to prosecute and while I do fervently believe Zimmerman is guilty, this case was only brought forward because of political pressure.

Yes, and I don't even believe he can live with himself, knowing he got away with this.
Florida is one f*cked up state.
George Zimmerman is a vile f*ck.
Mark O'Mara - vile f*ck.
My respect for our legal system is not what I am focused on at the moment.
I am upset about the path our society is on.
I read this in the comments section of the online NY Times article, and I couldn't agree more:
It is OK to ignore a police dispatcher's clear instructions to stay in the car and not follow someone one thinks is suspicious, and then act in a way that provokes a confrontation with a young man doing no wrong, which ends with the young man's death. If Zimmerman hadn't been so paranoid and carrying a gun, if he hadn't followed Martin, that young man would have returned to his father's condo with his skittles and soda to watch a basketball game.
The rights of the deluded and prejudicial to carry guns and act with impunity apparently trumps the rights of an innocent minor civilian. What is happening in this country? All this religious piety and conservatism, and we are acting more inhumane than ever.
^Right on the money.
George Zimmerman's new life begins tomorrow. He's got a job I'm sure waiting for him at Fox News. A new star is born. He'll write his tell all book on the incident which will be bought by Conservative gun owners by the case. He'll speak at gun shows and be a spokesperson for the NRA. Trust me, the Conservative media will make him into a star.I bet if he wanted to run for public office in Florida, the Tea Party would get behind him and he'd get elected easily.
Whats troubling is he never once apologized or showed remorse.I feel so bad for Trayvon Martin's family tonight.Killing African Americans in Florida is okay as long as you claim it's self defense. Zimmerman was the aggressor here and had he obeyed the 911 dispatch operator Trayvon would more than likely be alive today.

adgal - I am sure the family will pursue a civil lawsuit but as Mark O'Mara just noted in his press conference, they will try to obtain civil immunity. Most likely through using the Stand Your Ground "mechanism." It will take years for that to unfold, though.
What I don't get is why couldn't they find him guilty of ANY charge? And the speed at which they came to a verdict over such a difficult case...
Addy,
I agree with you and every word you wrote, 100%.
Thank you for being so eloquent.
It would be SO much cooler to live in a world where George Zimmerman offered Trayvon a ride home that night, to get him out of the rain....

Jane, 15 hours is actually the average jury deliberation time in Florida for murder cases. I get what you're saying but statistically Florida and Texas are the quickest to verdicts for whatever reason.
I was convinced he would be charged with Manslaughter. I'm surprised they did not at least settle for the "compromise verdict." Justice will eventually be served... even if it is outside of the Court.
this stress/unhappiness is all making me crave a big, juicy pizza <--------------------
thanks, headband. And of course, karma will get him somehow.

It all boils down to one fateful decision... Getting out of the car. As politically and socially complex as this all is, it doesn't need to be. Zimmerman made a personal decision to step out of his car. But he didn't need to. And he shouldn't have. It actually is that simple. This shows you how every step you take and every decision you make can have major implications at any moment in time. You never know.
