High school is horrible. So cheer up BEKA! I hated high school and would never go back for all the money in the world. College, on the other hand, was great. But high school...*ugh*
BTW, that's the beauty of being in a virtual community - people can't judge you by how you look or how old you are. Esp. on here, as long as you make valid contributions and insightful comments once in a while, age becomes irrelevant.
Ooo Yay, Dad's here.. brb
Thanks for the voice tips..I need them right now. Like the rest of you, Im sick too
and on the topic of age, I can relate to all of that And while I don't know what being an "adult" is like, I think that if it's worse than high school, I'm in trouble. I'm thinking after this AP world history class, though, I might have a pretty good idea. Phew, I should actually be finishing the documents right now. But since I've been doing them forever, I want to take a break..
Isn't this wierd? I look like Im 10 too Glad to know Im not alone! lol
The work can be a real pain, but just try to really find some kind of enjoyment in what you're learning...it makes everything 100 times less painful, and even enjoyable at times. Last year I had this "I hate high school" attitude and I just drove myself into the ground, but when I started looking at things another way, it made things so much easier. I agree, Im trying. But its hard, especially if your class is a bunch of ignorant suburban kids :-p I do like history though
If you guys are in grade 10 and under, and, well, motivated, I would highly recommend taking the International Baccalaureate Program in grades 11 and 12. It's fantastic. It makes you think in a critical way, and definitely prepares you for university. Academically, it makes the transition much smoother, and a lot of colleges recognize IB and give you first-year credits for those high school courses so you can graduate earlier! IB was the only time I really loved high school because you're surrounded by a smaller class of people similar to yourself and you challenge yourself more.
What is that? It sounds interesting..small classes are definatly my thing

Ellie, I didn't say I over-identify with "Joanne" for nothing! Notice my sn? I make lists in my sleep, baby! (Seriously, when I was on the angst thread, I actually posted my response from 1-5.)

i am *taking* AP classes. they're solely responsible for my demise. in a nutshell, it's death when you have 3 MASSIVE double-digit page papers all due within days of each other.
Jumping back into the thread
Hey everyone!
FYI, I won't be 18 till July 4th, but have looked like I was 12 since I was 13
One of the things I adore about this (and other) message board is that since no one can see you, you are judged solely on the maturity you put into your posts
And that's really more important than a number anyway
haha..I hear ya, Beka. This weeks gunna be hell. We have all of our journals due tomorrow, two essays thursday, and our big unit test friday that covers a few hundred centuries.
Wow, my AP classes were never that intense!
But I still hated them. Ugh.
Except AP Calc! And Physics! I loved those. (Esp. calc! Haha)
But they all paid off. I'm like technically a sophomore in college even though I'm a first year student.

i think on this board once you're 15+ all the ages blend together... you can totally tell who's 12 though...

"where did Fredi go?"
I'm still here, just multi-tasking...
to you under 18'rs...
you guys are WAY MATURE - no doubt....and that makes me feel proud (for the next generation)
but camerangel is right - don't rush it - being an adult comes with HEAVY RESPONSIBILITY and nobody's giving you any slack 'cause they're like - well he/she's "old enough to know better"
so take advantage of your "youthful exuberance" and make your mistakes now while people are still willing to pick you up and help you get back on your feet.(and hopefully, while your parents are still paying your rent
So, is IB like college courses or something like that? Do you get college credit?

Hi Fredi!! Allow me to introduce myself! I'm Ellie!
*genuflects*
LOVE you!
International Baccalaureate (ie. "IB" www.ibo.org I think) is this awesome program. You learn the basics (math, a science, english, history, a language, etc.) but there's more freedom to what you learn, and your curriculum is a bit different than your usual curriculum. At the end, you get a high school diploma and an IB diploma. Esp. with English, Theatre Arts and History, it's awesome because you learn to read and analyze art and history in a more in-depth light. And since the class is only like, 60 people, you get to know your classmates really well and everyone's a great support for each other. I went through a lot of crap up to and including grade 10, but grades 11 and 12 were fantastic.
I mean, you have to take an entrance exam (but a lot of public schools offer it internationally) and I've always said that academic smarts does not make someone "smart". The only real drawback to IB is you get the psychotic ruthlessly amibitious freaks who betray other people to get to the top of the class. As well, because the curriculum is so vigorous and challenging, a lot of people start to base their self-worth on their grades, which is hardly a reflection of how well-rounded and intelligent you are. I have a friend who quit IB after the first year, didn't go to college, but travelled around the world and worked a lot, and I think he's one of the smartest people that I know. in the same vein, I had a close friend who got top marks in IB but never worked, travelled, ate out, went to the movies/theatre or anything. Even though I got lowr marks than her, I'd say I'm smarter than her.
So, uh, yeah, sorry to ramble, but it's very worth while as:
a) a prep for college (in terms of workload and quality of writing and analysis)
b) a way to make friends to at least be surrounded by people with similar interests
c) an extra bonus on your university application - If you get a top grade for your courses, you get first year credit in that subject, so because of that I'm getting my undergraduate degree in 3 years instead of 4.
Oh yeah, it is similar to AP. I think AP you also can get first year credit. The only difference is IB focusses on international perspectives/work, so yoy study a lot of european, south american, asian etc. pieces.
Edit: Yeah it is sort of like college courses. You essentially cram grades 11 and 12 into grade 11 and do first-year-equivalent stuff in grade 12. Dont' get me wrong - the work load is quite a bit more than "regular" school, but it's candy compared to college, and a very good prep. I went back to visit my high school the year after I graduated and wrote a letter to the history class saying, "Mr. [gruff teddy bear History teacher] is a prick. However, he's also right. He gives a damn about what you do and how well you do in this class. Your university teachers won't. So appreciate [mean history teacher] while you have him, even when he assigns you extra work and yells at you for sleeping through class. To your university professor, you're 1 face in hundreds, and they're there for the paycheque. Mr. [name] is an Asshole, but you'll thank him some day."
My prof posted the letter at the front of his class.
I'm back..
that was just the most bizarre thing in the world.. Seeing my parents in the same room after 11 years.. creepy..
Being mature in your own age group is not fun though...everyone hates you.
