i’m surprised they didn’t bother to nominate the great society for anything.

Here's Aaron Tveit's reaction to his Tony nomination:
"It's a huge honor and I am so grateful to be nominated!! It's also vitally important to highlight that this recognition represents, collectively, thousands of hours of work by hundreds of individuals working on Moulin Rouge! The Musical. All the brilliant craftspeople, technicians, stagehands and crew that run our show night to night, those in the front and back of the house, inside and outside our stage doors, our incredible audience and fans, and of course the cast, creative team, and producers.
"A day hasn't gone by since the shutdown began that I haven't missed the theatre and I look forward to when we can all return. I hope this can be a positive lift amidst an industry shut down with an ever-changing timeline, as well as a reminder of power of live theatre, and what it can do for us as individuals. And for our world."

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about Zawe Ashton--I thought she was a lock for a nomination and had a good shot at winning. Shows how much I know.
As for Tveit, I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but this is why they should have de-gendered the acting categories this year. Is the work he did in Moulin Rouge really so different that it can't be compared to the three leading ladies who were nominated?
And which of these plays do people think will win Best Score?
Whatever does win Best Score, I hope they release it for sale.
I would love to have seen Jerry O'Connell nominated. Really enjoyed his performance in "A Soldier's Play". Blair Underwood was fine but I do remember thinking it wasn't a Tony winning performance (IMO). I would really like to see David Alan Grier take the award. He blew me away.
It's a crime that Paul Alexander Nolan was not nominated. I think Cusati-Moyer was deserving of a nomination but I feel Nolan should have gotten the other nom. JMO

Paul Alexander Nolan hasn't had much luck at the Tonys. In 2018, there were only 5 eligible candidates for Leading Actor in a Musical. The Tonys nominated 4 of them, and Nolan (for ''Escape to Margaritaville'' ) was the odd man out. ... And now 5 out of the 8 actors in ''Slave Play'' got nominated, but not Nolan.

the unbelievable courage it took for Kalukango and Nolan to have played "act three" of Slave Play every performance and to do so with such commitment and skill.... ah well

I hope you are not suggesting that he should haver been nominated for Margarittaville. I thought that Nolan was outstanding in Slave Play, but he was perfectly adequate in Margarittaville.

So looks like there's a decent chance (even likely?) that Moulin Rouge walks away from this winning all of the awards they are nominated for except 2 (Lead and Featured Actress).
Which means Moulin Rouge could end up being an 11-time Tony winning musical. Same as Hamilton.
That is...uh...kind of inappropriate in my opinion...haha..."
By my count, Moulin Rouge would have picked up 11-12 nominations if it were "regular times." I believe it would have been seriously competitive to win6-7 of them. It's not my favorite show ever, but you can't deny the design components. Sure, 11 wins would be odd, but it's 2020. Everything is odd.
I'm super happy for Aaron, but I wish they had put him in featured actor instead (booting out Derek Klena). That would have made for an exciting race."
But he had the lead role in the show. What they should have done is made the category 'Best Performance by a Lead in a Musical'.

''I hope you are not suggesting that [Nolan] should have been nominated for Margarittaville.''
Nope. Just pointing out that he finished 5th in a 5-man race.
''What they should have done is made the category 'Best Performance by a Lead in a Musical'.''
If you're suggesting that the Tony nominators create a new degendered category for a Lead in a Musical, there are no provisions for that in the Tony rules. Their regulations list the specific 25 categories for awards, and the titles for the 8 acting categories. If they ruled that neither Tveit nor McCarrell were worthy of a Tony nomination, they had the discretion to eliminate the category. But they couldn't create new categories. Maybe the Tonys will degender these categories someday, but not on short notice & not without rewriting rules.
"Maybe the Tonys will degender these categories someday, but not on short notice & not without rewriting rules."
I agree they are not going to rush into this, for a variety of reasons, but rewriting rules is no biggie. This is not like the City Counsel that has to have committee meetings and hearings and third readings and so on. When they want to change the rules, they can do it in a single meeting.
Now that the nominations are out, can we speculate when the ceremony will actually be held? Will there be performances from the three nominated musicals?
I’m wondering about the performances as well. Is it possible they’d just show a full number shot for B-Roll?

Really happy for Burnap. He was the absolute standout in that cast, and I remember him being overlooked in London, I think. Great news.
(Also happy for Hilton, but think he was more of a lock).

It's possible. Each show will obviously get to decide what they can do best. It could also be a medley cut from B-roll rather than a full number, or they could film some new solo piece (or part thereof). Hopefully, they will not try to get too cute with other new footage but we shall see. I think it will be sooner rather than later but they are going to have to announce voting soon if that's the case.

The Inheritance is already available on Spotify. I don’t know about the others.
I still feel bummed for Rob McClure. I've always found him an engaging performer, particularly Beetlejuice, Chaplin and Vegas (loved the two former, hated the latter) and on the SR tour ... even if he did (understandably) trash San Francisco when he was here...OMG I shudder to think what he would say today, as SF is a complete cesspool today with a worthless mayor who is way over her head. But I digress.
Full disclosure, I only saw the Seattle out-of-town of Doubtfire, not the NYC version, but the show sure seemed tight and Broadway ready so I don't know if any changes were made. I thought Rob was finally going to get his well-deserved Tony recognition. I thought Aaron was 'meh' though that could be clouded by my 'meh' opinion of MR as a whole. Happy for Danny ... he poked my chest with his cane and called me "Filth!" so he would get my vote anyway. LOL
Though I suspect Broadway casts and crews would rather be working on the boards than getting awards. Still ...

I had no idea! Thank you!!!!!!
Jordan Catalano said: "One positive thing is that if things had been normal the Best Actress award would have been a fight between Adrienne Warren and Sharon D Clarke and now they both can get their awards."
The same can be said about a couple of other musical categories:
Featured Actress- Patten AND LuPone
Set Design- Derek McLane (for Moulin Rouge!) AND Bunny Christie (for Company)
What are the predictions for Best Actress in a Play? Because I think it's time for a seventh Tony for Ms. McDonald.

Jumping in a bit late here but I thought the decision to completely leave the Lightning Thief out was extremely petty. As a whole, it was objectively a very bad musical, I admit that, but it wasn’t without its good parts. I think the score carried the entire show and the show would’ve been infinitely worse without it, so not nominating the only original score of a musical this year is ridiculous. If Be More Chill can be nominated then The Lightning Thisf 100% should have been this year. Chris McCarrell is a tough one for me. He definitely would not have deserved a nomination in a normal year, but I can’t help but feel horrible for him. He sang the part great, and while the dialogue scenes were pretty bad, I attribute that to a creative decision more than acting, so his nomination in this season wouldn’t have been terrible. A lightning design nod also would’ve been justifiable.

Shows dont deserve awards just for existing....weird year or not. Doing so cheapens the nomination of every worthy nod. If they wanted awards, they should have created a better show.
Example: I'm thinking Tveit has a better brag to be able to say that he was the only man worthy of a nomination in the year he won, instead of winning over the most ridiculed show if the season.

Whaaaaaaaaat? Hahahahaha! Worthy of a nomination?!
I can't imagine Tveit bragging that. I actually thought his response was very classy of him.
I do wonder if any of the nominators have written scores before. Writing lyrics/music for a musical is not easy and I agree with others that Lightning Thief's score wasn't terrible.
