Congrats Nicole!
While I wish some awards had gone another way, the only one I’m actually disappointed in is “Purpose” taking Best Play. So only one out of the whole lot, not bad for me.

So Audra acted the hell out of the role but her voice did suit the score or just what we are use too. And Nicole sang beautifully but couldn’t act to save her life. I’m loss and over it lol

I thought Nicole's acting as Norma was as sublime as her singing.
I just read this whole thread, I wasn't following it as I was watching and WHEW. This thread is a wild mix of people genuinely commenting on the show and just being downright a**holes to each other
Anyway, here were my general thoughts:
- Loved Cynthia Erivo's opening and closing number. Very well done. Her bits mostly worked too, she was a solid host especially after DeBose's stuff felt so tired last year.
- Best speeches of the night IMO were Celia Keenan Bolger (so heartfelt) and Darren Criss (so well prepared). All the reading off papers and phones - I get it (well, not the phones) - but I never like it as much.
- In Memoriam was beautifully done. Love that they chose "Tomorrow" as the song and Sara and Cynthia were great.
- I did enjoy seeing the Hamilton cast performing again. The mash-up was a little too much IMO but I get they wanted to highlight everyone. It just felt like every time I got into a moment, it abruptly changed.
- I was a little disappointed in the Purpose win only because I want it to be OK for comedic plays to win.
For the show performances, I felt like this was one of the weaker years broadly speaking:
- Death Becomes Her: underwhelming and messy
- Just in Time & Real Women Have Curves: not a great song choice
- Sunset & Gypsy: maybe these work better in context? I am seeing both this summer but haven't seen either yet. They were interesting but also not quite the moments I feel like people thought they'd be
- Dead Outlaw: wild but fun
- Maybe Happy Ending: maybe not the best song choice but I still found it charming
- Pirates & Floyd Collins: meh
- Mincemeat & Buena Vista: both were OK but I haven't seen these shows and this didn't make me change my mind on wanting to see them

I was fortunate enough to be in the room tonight. The song choices seemed ... odd, for the most part.
Buena Vista and Just In Time had an electricity to their performances that I don't think would've translated well on television. (Also, folks were texting me about sound issues?)
Sunset and Gypsy were both incredible, although I don't ever recall Audra belting Rose's Turn like she did during tonight's performance. Something seemed ... different. (And I've seen her twice.)
Hamilton was incredible. Dead Outlaw didn't grab me at the beginning but had me at the end.
What a tough season.

And Jasmine did both.

And yet she lost. And her show will be closing soon.
Next.
Just realizing John Proctor went home empty handed. I feel like it had to be close in a lot of categories.
Happy that after all of the hand-wringing Nicole rightfully won. Audra is incredible always but Nicole remained the performance of the season.

Yes, there were sound issues through most of the performances, with sound cutting in and out. Combined with poor camera direction for many of them, the telecast was significantly less than it should have been for both the audience and many of these shows (that paid for the privilege of having their shows poorly captured and transmitted.)
Death Becomes Her at least has their Tonight Show performance of "For the Gaze," which was much better than the Tonys version (which was choppy and rushed), and I think Mincemeat's version of "Born to Lead" from the Oliviers was better than this. But for a lot of the rest of the shows, it's too bad this subpar capture is what exists.

That's every thread. "A wild mix of people genuinely commenting on the show and just being downright a**holes to each other" should be BroadwayWorld's tagline.
Quick thoughts:
21/26 for my Tony ballot. Not bad at all.
Erivo was in thrilling voice all night long, though the outfits were questionable. She's one of the only people right now that can wail the word "TONY" and elicit big emotion. Good opening number, spot-on closing parody. Someone write this girl a new musical already!!!
Best perf of the night easily goes to HAMILTON, who should be selling a lot more tickets in the coming days (along with BVSC and DBH). Mixed results from pretty much all the rest. Noticeable sound issues and God-awful camera work.
Can't say there were any outright shockers amongst tonight's winners. You'll know PURPOSE had a real shot at winning best play if you had taken a look at the Paulson survey.
Nicole def deserved lead actress in a musical. End of conversation.
And for a bit of a hot take: the first musical to close after tonight will be REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, but the first one to announce its closing will be DEAD OUTLAW (followed by BOOP!).

It played better within the context of the script when I say her on stage. You also had to see her performance leading up to the song to appreciate it. Well deserved!
Also, I beat Adam Feldman, again. Take that!

You lose credibility by saying Purpose isn't a good play. Oh Mary! and Purpose are both terrific and it's very hard to compare the two as they are so different.

Good overall assessment. I really enjoyed seeing Pirates last week (as did the audience, great energy) so do yourself a favour and check it out and I also enjoyed (in London) Mincemeat. )

Add SMASH to the mix
For such a strong season, I thought the show was oddly off the entire time. Cynthia acquitted herself well, but none of the performances seemed to fully gel and those LED screens were awful. It all felt rushed and pushed. I can’t quite put my finger on it.
