So who is Raul be talked about for? I LOVE him...but I don't see him as any male role in Night Music.
BTW...just about Kate Winslet in general. Has she ever done stage work since she became a "star" in around 1994-1995? She was only about 19 when she was nominated for an Oscar. I forget how young she is...especially when I see pictures of her at this years Oscars where she looked 45! Updated On: 7/4/09 at 02:18 PM

I am not familiar with this musical. I heard a couple of songs and I didn't care for them, but casting Raul MIGHT get me into this show.

AndAllThatJazz, ALNM isn't among my top 5 Sondheim favorites, but I certainly appreciated it much more after seeing it. Like many Sondheim musicals (and, indeed, most musicals with strong books), the songs work much better and make more sense in context--thus greatly adding to one's admiration of the show.
Hest882, I don't get to NYC often... but if a Regional Theatre near me took on the show, I'd go see it.

Well...if he does get Fredrick when he sings "Now" he does change out of a suit and into a long night shirt...so you might get to see a little something!
I have to admit, for as excited as people seem to be getting about the possibility of Raul Esparza, I'm just not feeling it. I certainly would not be crushed if this rumor turns out to be nothing more than that. I don't know who I would want for Fredrik, but I would prefer somebody with a more classical baritone sound than what I've heard from Raul (thinking the sound that Brian Stokes Mitchell produces, though I believe he's out of the age range Nunn is looking for).
Raul Esparza showed his bum in Cabaret, didn't he?

ETA - Nevermind, you corrected. And yes. He also took it all off in The Normal Heart, but for the love of God, I'm kidding! He could perform in pajama pants and a down parka for all I care.
Ah, underestimation of my taste... and ability to grow up.
Trust me - if he's in it, period, I will be there as soon as humanly possible. I don't need him to get naked to motivate me. If I did, I would have been bored YEARS ago. I wouldn't have seen Company more times than humans have fingers.
A Little Night Music is one of the most beautiful scores I've ever heard. And the Walter Kerr is one of the most beautiful theaters I've ever been in on Broadway. as long as they get a good cast, it'll be a sumptuous evening of theater.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

I'm with luvtheEmcee, if Raul is in it... it could be a show that I don't like... i will still be interested.

Lol, I don't know, I think we have all been in the boards long enough to know that Em meant that very tongue-in-cheek
And well, nobody needs for Raul to get naked for motivation but it sure doesn't hurt!
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
It's going to be at the Kerr theatre? That's where "Grey Gardens" was right? That's going to be perfect! I just hope that the orchestra is big enough to do it justice!
AndAllThatJazz, I'm not in NY either but I saw it at a local production here in the Bay Area. "Send in the Clowns" suddenly made sense after all those years!
Raul is too young for Fredrik Egerman. This character is the father of Henrik who is a 19 or 20 year old seminary student. Raul is 39 now, although he looks younger on stage.
Even at his "real" age of 39, Fredrik would have had to be 19 or 20 himself when his son Henrik was born. And he's a lawyer. I doubt he would have been married so young and having kids while studying as an undergraduate.
It's bad casting for this character and his motivations, too. Fredrik is going through a major midlife crisis in the story. It's the reason he marries 18-year-old Anne. It would look silly and trivial for a 39-year-old (who doesn't even look it) to be "trying to renew his unrenewable youth." (a line Fredrik says in the show)
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."
