best12bars, that's exactly how I feel about the rumored casting. I'm sure Raul would be great; he's great in everything, but there are many actors I would want to see in the role before considering him. Maybe in 10 years, but not now.

At 49, Raul would be great. I agree, orangeskittles, ten years from now.
But not now.
SPOILERS!!!!!! ***************************
The same is true for Desiree. She was Fredrik's mistress 15 years ago, and they haven't seen each other since. That affair resulted in Desiree's daughter, Fredrika, who is 15 in the show.
If Winslet plays Desiree, she is 35 now. Again, doesn't look it at all. But at the "real" age of 35, Desiree would have been a 20 year old up-and-coming actress, having her affair with Fredrik. According to the dialogue, she was already an established actress back when they had their romance. Fredrik actually saw her in many plays. Also, Fredrik is with Ann because she's 18 and makes him feel young. At 35, Desiree would hardly be considered old, even by the standards at the turn of the 20th century in Europe. It doesn't ring true at all to the dialogue and situations in the show. 45? Yes. 35, no.

ljay---Cariou got the part because he always looked and played older than he was. He may have been 35, but "looked right" opposite a 50-year-old Glynnis Johns as Desiree. She looked younger than 50, true, but those were their real ages.
This isn't about actual age of actors anyway. This is about how they look and come off on stage (or screen).
Raul and Kate look and behave too young for these roles. I don't care what Nunn is doing. It doesn't make it work for me. And it doesn't make sense.

You can argue the age ranges all you want, but the facts are the casting notices did indeed go out with the younger age ranges and Nunn is importing his concept from London where he already has mounted the show with this "younger" casting (quite wonderfully according to several people I know who have seen it and who's opinions I highly respect).
So with this production it is much more a matter of arguing who is too old for it as opposed to too young.
I'd have more of a problem with mismatched actors/actresses--such as Emma Thompson and Esparza--but with Winslet and Esparza it would be much easier suspending disbelief given that the entire production would hold up age-wise.
For what it's worth, They just asked Raul on NY1 On Stage about an up-coming Sondheim project, but Raul simply said something is in the works and left it at that.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
Yeah. He said the same thing a week or so ago on another show. That's all he CAN say until there's an official announcement, whatever the project may be.
The other thing he said was that there was a "possible Sondheim thing." What Singtopher is quoting is a little bit more leading. Not to get hopes up or anything, ha.
Seriously, seeing the announcement with Kristin Scott Thomas on playbill.com really makes me wish that she was playing the part on Broadway instead! I mean, she's perfect for the part for goodness' sake. Besty, I'm with you, while I'm excited for this production, since it's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC after all, I find Nunn's age expectations pretty ridiculous (as I have said numerous times on this thread and a dozen other threads, so apologies for repeating myself).
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I heard this rumor a couple of months ago and was hoping it wasn't true but now I see some other posts, so I guess where there is smoke there is fire. This would be the worst case of nepotism/gimmick you could have... The producers hoping the story of the daughter of the two actors who met in the original production now being in the show herself. They are hoping the gimmick will sell tickets/get lots of press but they are putting arguably Stephen Sondheim's best music in the hands of someone who frankly isn't that good and I predict it will backfire on them!
I saw her twice during her 6 month(maybe) run in the Fantasticks and she could barely handle that. So they producers and director want us to believe out of the THOUSANDS of singers in the US, the best person just HAPPENED to be the daughter of the original cast members?? Nonsense. And to those that were gloating about what a great casting it would be, I would assume the you either are a friend of hers or Mallory herself because she is an unknown (unless you saw her at Snapple) and only did regional things before that.
I can't say anything about the kid from CM they are considering because I know nothing about him, but, like I say, unless she was sick both times I went, I'll be really upset over this... sigh
