I wasn't aware of that. Evans has played Buddy in at least 5 different regional productions that I know of over the years.
Mitch Jarvis played Lonny in Rock of Ages, then switched to playing Stacee Jaxx for a while, before switching back to Lonny.

Bernadette Peters was in the chorus and understudied Dainty June in a 1961 National tour of Gypsy and then went onto play Mama Rose in the 2003 Broadway Revival.
Colm Wilkinson played both Jon Val Jean (?) and the Bishop in Les Mis (but not the bishop on Broadway)....
Gemma Sutton played June in the London revival of Gypsy and then she was "upgraded" to Louise when Lara Pulver left... not really a return, tho
Maureen Moore was June in the 1974 Broadway revival of Gypsy and in 2003 she was Bernadette Peters' excellent standby.
Tony Yazbeck was one of the newsboys in the Tyne Daly's revival and he played Tulsa in 2008.

Not sure if this counts, but Kelly Bishop originated the role of Kitty in Six Degrees of Separation, then took over the leading role (Ouisa) when Stockard Channing left.
When the show moved to Broadway, Bishop once again played Kitty and Channing once again played Ouisa -- and Bishop once again took over Ouisa from Channing when she left.

I could be wrong, but I think Kay Cole (original Maggie) played Diana at some point in ACL.

For Linzi Hateley on top of Eponine and Mme Thenardier, she was offered to be a Fantine replacement in the original revival as well, but declined.
Drew Sarich played Grantire, left and came back to play Valjean for a short time as well during that same revival.
