I have NO idea what's goin on, and I'm okay with that!
I was just at Rotten Tomatoes...not sure if I'm misreading that busy and confusing website, but for RENT it says:
Critics: 100%

A good sign if you ask me.

I am a little surprised too Lari. There has been quite a bit of negativity floating around the web, so I really was expecting a lot more criticism from the media. So far, the reviews have been pretty decent. We must be more critical than we realized.
However, many of the big ones have not been released yet, so who knows what we'll still get.
Rotten Tomatoes.com is my hero.
And I'm still holding my breath for those. Ebert and Roeper liked it... I wanna see their full report.
not sure if this was posted.
Regardless, here's another review - certainly not professional, but inveresting and well written.
Many of the issues I have the movie, he shares.
It's a very mixed review, but leaning very strongly on the positive side. It's kind of like "Well, it could be better, but it's RENT so it's amazing."
No complaints
Modern Fabulosity review
Again, not sure if this was posted, but I stumbled upon it.
3/5 stars.

Although reviews are important, is it really going to sway any of your opinions on the film itself? I've purposely kept away from them because I don't want to go into the film with this preconcieved notion and randomly having moments of "Oh so that's what Such and Such of Blah blah blah Gazette meant" As much as I consider myself a free thinking individual, even I admit that sometimes those articles start to shape my opinion. Am I the only one who feels that way?
I do feel that way, joliz... But I'm freely reading reviews because I've already seen the movie and formed my opinion.
I highly encourage everyone else to do the same.

I've used 'fabulosity' before.
And 'fantasmagorical,' at that.
I agree Anthony, it is interesting how bias is having its play with the reviews. Most reviewers so far at least, even if they don't like the movie, are giving credit where it is due. To the incredible material and to your all's talent.
ps. It's great to hear from you again.

I feel the same way about avoiding reviews - I've only read a couple that were more a meditation than a detailed review - but one thing is becoming obvious. There have been some pretty extreme differences in critics' reactions, exemplified by Variety (very negative) and The Hollywood Reporter (very positive). Their reviewers are not often so diametrically opposed. This tells me that the movie is at least reaching people and pushing some buttons. "It was so-so" can be the kiss of death.
i also like to have my own opinion- i think it will be good but not nearly as amazing as live... im also kinda shakky about the extra characters added in...
Reviews won't matter for The Odd Couple because it's got HUGE stars. That's totally different. For someone who's never heard of Rent, it doesn't have stuff like that to ride over the negativity on. Maybe someone who reads a bad review could be turned on to the idea of seeing it by hearing and liking the music or something, but it's not so much of a "I'll see it anyway" thing at something like The Odd Couple. That's a really extreme comparison. Reviews probably won't matter for already established fans, but what about for everyone else?
Extra characters? Huh?
Yankeefan, though the show's fan base is big by theatrical standards, I'm not sure it's anywhere large enough to support a big movie release.
I'm going to put you on the spot a little and ask why you posted the Variety review on a separate thread? Or why not post The Hollywood Reporter one with it, to balance things out?

I freaking adore that icon.
I woke up this morning and realized that it was 2 more days until I saw Rent, and that completely energized me.
I can't believe it really is soon. Weeks ago, that icon was a bit of a joke, but now it really is soon!
