Between the subject matter and mixed-to-negative reviews... But yes, I feel sorry for Takei the most in this thing. I'd blame the creatives, but it's not like they set out to make a "bad" show on purpose. There have been fans who enjoyed it, just not enough. Given the current political climate and what I've seen across social media (including on my Facebook where a Muslim friend spoke out about verbal abuse because apparently a lot of people didn't know she was Muslim!), I suspect a frightening number of people actually would support the Japanese-American internment again.
Sad to see this show close too soon but I'm glad I will get to see in my Jan 20-25 NYC trip!
As for the "weird" closing date, the BWW article says "By the closing date, there will be about 120,000 people who would have seen the show, similar to the number of Japanese American in the interment camps." I think the closing day was picked for the symbolism! And good for them if it is so!
Allegiance had soul, heart, an attractive score, and a wonderful performance by Lea Salonga.
This was certainly better than any new musical on Broadway both this season and last --- so superior in every way to the overhyped, overpraised critics' darlings whose hysterical praises we're forced to endure relentlessly day after day after day after day after day.......

The thing is, you always imply that shows are critics' darlings when in fact they're commercial smash hits. A critical darling is something that you say about a show that lots of normal people don't like, but critics do. HAMILTON is not a critics' darling because it has sold out every performance its given and will give for the next six months (and I assume for far beyond that). It's also beloved across the country thanks to its cast recording. Jesus, get your head out of your ass once in a while.

After Eight, do everyone a favor, take a knife and plunge it into your chest or stomach, whatever. just drop dead already.
The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. Nonsense.
Oh, and plenty of "normal" people don't like Hamilton. They just don't seem to post on this board. Not that one could blame them. They know the vituperation that would be headed their way. Like the kind you've just shelled out.
But, accommodating soul that I am, if you find the term critics' darling objectionable, I'll use another equally apt here: ordeal.
While I enjoyed the performances all around it felt to me like a piece that should have been on Broadway about 10 years ago in terms of score and direction. I wish someone would have let Stafford Arima know there are bolder more interesting choices than just spotlights. I am sure there will be many more interesting regional productions than the one playing on Broadway right now.
Allegiance had its heart in the right place, but the show is basically community theatre quality writing dressed up with two "stars" who are not able to attract enough of an audience to make that fact go away. Oh, and ignore After Eight-just a garden variety troll who gains sustenance from the abuse he gets here. The rest of us can have a genuine conversation about our likes and dislikes-what trolls say don't mean a thing.
My problem with After Eight is I've seen him post things that I agree with (rarely) but even when he is not correct -- like the misuse of the term "critical darling," which generally implies that the subject isn't a "commercial darling" -- he outright objects to himself being wrong. God knows I have very strong opinions, however on this board I stick mostly to posting factual things and not opinions, since someone always has a disagreement with opinions.

#truthtea. Jay Kuo just isn't a very good composer / lyricist / book writer.

What the hell is the matter with you? Are you Lizasheadband? That psychopath always encourages people to kill themselves as well. Regardless of what you think of After Eight, your comment is the most vile type of garbage on the internet.
