Just a question: What makes an opening "An Opening"? I know there have been some shows recently that have celebrated their opening prior to the official opening. Is there anything that would prevent them from doing the same thing here: going ahead with the scheduled performance and opening party, but simply declaring that the official opening is postponed? I'm asking this question from a position of pure ignorance, but I am curious as to what barriers exist that might prevent this.
Andy Karl just tweeted this to his understudy: "Have a great show tonight @AndrewCall1! You're gonna kill it. break a .... never mind, MERDE! Cc @GhDMusical".
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I believe the Broadway League has to approve when a show opens and more than one show can't usually open on one day, and since it's so close to the Tony cut off they can't really delay opening unless they defer to next season.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
"Minchin said he and the crew believe that Karl will be “fine and back on his feet” in the future."
definitely doesn't seem like Karl will be back soon. I'm assuming the producers will decide today if opening night is being postponed?

Agreed. Knees are fragile, complicated, and their healing is invariably slow(er) than many other foot and leg injuries. (Have had two.) It's not about muscle tissus, and the ice/heat therapy, or massage, or other techniques are often unavailable. Anyone who's had a fall of any kind and not shielded the kneecaps knows what recovery feels like -- two steps forward, literally, and one backward. Actors are known for resiliency, and to play with pain. Especially dancers. But it's hard to imagine a joint more vulnerable to the demands of musical theater, and this role requires enormous range.
"I'm a comedian, but in my spare time, things bother me." Garry Shandling
Eagerly waiting to hear reports on how the understudy is.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Very interesting. I wonder if this has ever happened before where an understudy went on on opening night.

Sounds very much like the Carpinello-Jackson XANADU predicament from a decade ago. Kudos to Andy and Andrew. Sending happy, healing thoughts, Mr. Karl!
Wow, I hope the producers are petitioning to the Tony committee to ask them to still consider Andy for eligibility. Extreme circumstances?
As incredible as it is for an understudy to jump into the role right before opening, Andy has been working on this show for a long time, just won the Olivier, and will hopefully be back in the role soon. It doesn't make sense for an understudy to be eligible for the nomination.
I also think the producers know how serious his injury is and that he won't be back soon. If Karl was only to be out a week, they might have postponed the opening. But I'm thinking he's going to be out a month or so.

Also, the injury occurred at a point late in the show (I've seen the show twice) so any critics who were at the performance Friday night really have a very solid basis for reviewing Andy Karl's performance as well as the show.

And if he's going to be out that long, it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to schedule all the Tony voters to see him when he returns. It's likely many of them would end up seeing Andrew Call.
If he's out more than three weeks, Call would have to be contracted into the roll or Call & the other u/s would have to alternate in the role. An understudy can't perform the same role longer than three weeks in a row.

I'm devastated for Karl. If it's a torn meniscus (I've had one) he may need surgery which would keep him out of the show for an extended period of time. If he doesn't have surgery ( I didn't), the injury takes its time in healing and then pops up again from time to time. I hope this isn't what happened to him.
What a bunch of doomsday seekers you all are. While I know it might be bad, it might not be awful.
Hoping the best for him.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
