Perhaps it wasn't a complete tear, as ACL tears are a complete b:tch to heal. In my experience, a true ACL tear is not healed by rest and PT. It typically takes surgery and a rigorous PT regiment to come back from the injury. For his sake and the future of his knees (I've torn both, rushed rehabbing one, and am facing major knee reconstruction at 32), I hope he works closely with his physical therapy team to ensure he long term success,
ACL tears are funny things...sometimes you can walk away fine from a wicked accident with no knee injury and other times, a wrong step destroys it. I tore one of mine when walking my dog and accidentally stepping into a shallow whole. I moved laterally and that was it for 7 months.
To anyone chastising Andy for performing, remember a few things:
- We don't know how bad the damage is exactly. We're not his doctor, and I'm pretty sure that every injury is unique, so whatever background knowledge you possess is null and void.
- This show and tonight obviously means a lot to him, and he wants to see it through as best he can.
- Andy is a grown man, and if he at the discretion of the show and his doctors has decided to perform it's really none of our business, and nothing you type here can change what is going to happen tonight. Weather or not you agree with his decision, I don't care, but at least respect it.
Anyone who was there on Saturday and saw Andrew Call, can you tell me what the curtain (the TVs with clips of Good Weather with Phil Connors) and the (presumably pre-taped?) news intro looked like? Was it still AK or did they rush and tape some with Andrew?
A fully torn ACL requires surgery. No questions. I'm assuming this is a partially torn ACL and he'll be walking around in a boot. Also, a fully torn ACL hurts like hell and you can barely walk. No way Karl would be performing tonight if it was a full ACL tear. I'm guessing he performs tonight and then isn't back for a week or so and then works on a limited schedule.
thealtoslament - It was on someone I know's Snapchat but the video screens had Andrew Call as Phil, not Andy.

Cool, thanks! I was curious since Andrew stepping in was such a last-minute thing.
Anybody know what time the show is scheduled to start tonight?

Knee brace and a possible limp, according to the show's spokesperson:

I don't have an Instagram so wonderful, thank you! Damn, he looks young when he's clean-shaven.

Wow. A torn ACL. He says it will be fine with Physical Therapy but man to jump right back into the show.
"
Are we sure he is going on tonight? The photos from the show curtain look a lot more like Andrew than Andy. And Andy says he can't wait to see everyone on their opening night, not that he can't wait to perform tonight.

I wouldn't be surprised if Andy does all the shows this week for the Tony nominators, and then takes a lighter schedule (maybe have Andrew alternate or do the matinees?), returning in full when Tony voters arrive. I really love the show and Andy's performance, and I hope he gets his fair due, but I hope he gets well as well! His long-term health is obviously number one.

"Tonight, Karl appeared game if slightly tender as Phil rose from under a comforter in his B&B room after the show’s opening number. A black brace was visible on his left knee as he pulled on his clothes in the wake of that iconic 6 AM clock radio wake-up. Once the crowd quieted down, Karl moved about the room."

What most people call a knee sprain is actually a slight tear. A knee brace can minimize the risk of further injury, but it will not make the pain go away. My guess is whatever they can do to dumb down the physical strain on the knee, they will do, and I would expect him to perform only as many times as necessary prior to the Tony nominations, and then take a break for a week or so. His knee will not get better, however, until he can take some extended time off. He will probably wearing the knee brace for as long as he is in the show. My only medical bona fides come from having sprained a knee many years ago. I remember the initial pain (I thought I had torn my leg in half), the tenderness lasting for weeks, and how the brace gave me the confidence to start moving around more naturally after just a week or so. With a brace, he should be able to function without doing further damage to the knee, but it is going to hurt....a lot. Despite his upbeat social media posts, do not think for a minute that what he is doing is not gutsy as hell. He's in Kerri Strug territory.
Andy should not risk further damage by performing. A torn ACL, however minor, can compromise other parts of the knee with any lateral movements. PT can strengthen the other ligaments and muscles but there are movements that should not be performed, brace or no brace. I love Andy and would hate to see his future jeopardized for this one role.

I was at the show tonight and he was amazing as always. He did wear a knee brace, but surpringly he really only had a slight limp. He was also still running around the stage. He was obviously running slower, but still running which was surprising. He truly is amazing. But there were definitely some moves he didnt do. Still amazing though it was an amazing night

It was last minute that he'd perform Saturday, but he is the understudy, so it was always planned that he'd eventually go on. They likely filmed them at the same time they filmed the intros for Andy.
Andy was on tonight with a brace (I was in the audience). They made some choreography changes, a few small wardrobe changes(see below), and he had one slip where he almost fell off a bed, but overall he came through it and seemed fine in the signature line afterward.
Moist noticeable
--in the third ghd, he doesn't do the little dance when getting into his pants
--in the backwards scene at the end of act 1, he strips to pants, but doesn't remove them before entering the bed.
--he no longer catches the girl on the ladder then the cat. Now he just catches the cat.
There's also just less walking
I had no idea the board had so many orthopedists on it!
Karl will be out for both shows today, Thursday night & Saturday matinee. Andrew Call will be on as Phil.

I wonder if Call will be on at all next week? I'd love to see him! But hopefully Andy will feel better and be able to come back! He really is incredible in this role.

Likely. I don't see Karl doing 8 shows a week for a while.
