I’ve been watching SNL since it’s debut in 1975 (I was 10).  Even in the 80s and 90s with an active lifestyle, I recorded it on my VCR, then later DVR, so I’ve never missed an episode.  Now, by saying this, I’m one of many that still watches it regardless who is hosting it.

What a thrill to watch a stage performer's star rise so quickly, before our eyes.

She'll be great. And she's def getting that Oscar nod. It's a pretty safe bet for WSS, as is Screenplay, Costumes and Cinematography.

So happy she’s breaking out! I hope she makes a return to Broadway real soon. I’d LOVE to see her take on Sweet Charity

Agreed she's got a great agent. Never seen someone become so embraced by the industry and pushed to the top. Interesting how that happens. But she's crazy talented, so good for her.

As mentioned above: her agent had zero to do with this gig.

I wonder if Ashley Park or Renee Rapp would be considered since they are now TV “stars”.  Lorne was a producer on Mean Girls.

First saw her in a random matinee of Pippin when a bunch of other understudies/standbys went on at once (Eric Altemus was Pippin and Sam Lips as Lewis and were fantastic). At first I was disappointed I wasn't going to see Ciara Renee, but looking back, I realize how lucky I was to catch DeBose in one of her few appearances in the role. She was excellent and appropriately bewitching and later unsettling as Leading Player and, of course, a great dancer.

I am happy for her and excited for anyone who could have such a crazy rise in this industry, but I admit I’m sort of surprised by it with her. I didnt find her to be much of a standout in WSS and while she’s very good she doesn’t seem particularly unique or SO undeniably great to me. I do wonder if she has a great team—especially a publicist—or perhaps she’s just really wonderful to work with.

Not knocking her talent at all, it just seems like there are many actors out there right now you think would have a similar rise, or have this happen faster for them.

WSS is an Amblin Entertainment film, which is owned by Steven Spielberg and which are very active with their awards season campaigning.  Films and television work receive awards consideration and nominations via campaigning.  This is why you’ll see countless television shows never receive awards nominations during their entire run (Sony Television is known for not campaigning their shows, which is why THE KING OF QUEENS or THE GOLDBERGS have never been nominated for Emmy Awards), as well as major films.  All of Spielberg’s work are always awards season campaigned which is why they are always heavily promoted and nominated for every award. DeBose is fortunate to have been part of a Spielberg film therefore she is benefitting from all this coverage and promotional material we are seeing.

This explains why you see almost everything produced by Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc nominated for something - because Netflix and Amazon Prime campaign heavily, even a cooking show they produced will get an Emmy Award nomination.  They’re good at this.

If you honestly believe that, you are lying to yourself. Lorne Michaels may have been the one to reach out, but to whom do you think he reached out? He didn't call Ariana DeBose. When it came time to make the negotiations, and actually get her on SNL, who do you think made those negotiations? Ariana? Michaels may have made the offer, but her agent had absolutely everything else to do with her getting the gig. There is a lot more to securing a gig than just getting an offer. To suggest otherwise is nothing short of foolishness.

It's well documented that SNL hosts are paid minimum scale. Take the gig or leave it. Good for her for getting invited to host, but don't think there was any negotiating involved.

Thank the publicists at Disney which is releasing the film, her own agent/personal publicist, her connection to Lorne from Schmigadoon, her talent, and above all the fact that a lot of people probably aren't rushing to host SNL mid-Omicron. Many people and factors at play here.

I assure you, there is still a contract with a lengthy rider. That contract is still negotiated.

Editing to add that I was company management for an Equity house operating on  a LORT Class D contract. You deal with agents and contract negotiations for everything when dealing with the unions. Things you wouldn't even think have to be negotiated.

Good opening medley - but why did Kate McKinnon have to be involved? DeBose was fine in all her skits, especially that Sound of Music thingy where I kept thinking about “Va-Gi-Na.” If anything, I really hope this episode helps DeBose’s Oscar case.

Also, I just can’t stand Pete Davidson. The guy haunts my worst nightmares.

I thought she was a strong host and appeared very confident while making specific character choices. She has a charisma and screen presence similar to Sara Ramirez where the camera seems to love both of them. It will be interesting to follow her career. I hope she has a good agent and becomes comfortable with her talent.

Too bad Strong was Otherwise engaged. It was nice to have someone who could really sing within the skits.

She was fine, and rather one note IMO. The funnest skit was the Eric Adams one, and not bc of her.

I thought she was okay. I’m fascinated by the fact that she’s gone from ensemble in Broadway shows to award-winning actress in Hollywood in such a short amount of time because in my opinion, she isn’t a great actress or singer. I know that sounds mean, and I don’t intend it to be. She’s good at both and she can definitely dance, but great at both? I don’t see it. Everything is at 110% (and there’s something admirable about that), but there’s no nuisance. It’s worked for her because she’s been in musicals, but does she have the ability to handle something outside that genre? She seems like a fun human, and anyone who comes from the theater world has a cheerleader in me, but I really hope she works on honing her skills.

She’s got mad skills.

I just don’t understand everyone squawking like she just got lucky and has no experience.  The woman was on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009.  Over the next 12 YEARS she has been in Bring It On, Motown, Pippin, Hamilton, A Bronx Tale and Summer on Broadway.  Then The Prom and Schmigadoon for TV.  She has EARNED her acclaim.  I personally hopes she gets the Oscar. Go Ariana!

Exactly.  This “short amount of time” took 12-13 years based on her professional debut, not counting the years she’s been performing prior to 2009.  Her extensive body of work is a testament to her talent as she was being cast as an unknown performer.  Heck, even after some major roles she was back in the ensemble at HAMILTON.  All the hard work paid off and being in the right projects helped land her on the radar of industry leaders.  Was luck involved?  Absolutely.  But without any level of talent none of this would be happening to her today.  WEST SIDE STORY definitely kicked open that door that was slightly closed.  Her SNL gig perfectly showcased her range and I’m EXCITED to see her career journey.  I’ve heard those “behind the scenes” stories about her but I could care less.  I look at the work, not the person and their private behavior.  Ariana, I got you, girl.  heart
